Quick answer
A full mattress is 54 by 75 inches. The three frames below are listed at 53.5 to 54 inches wide and 74.5 to 75 inches long, so each is at or just under the mattress size; the mattress overhangs slightly or sits flush. Their heights are 4, 14 and 14 inches, and the clearance underneath runs from nothing stated to 12 inches. If you want a bed you can store under, choose a 14 inch frame. If you want to sleep close to the floor, choose the 4 inch one, and accept that you will not store anything underneath.
The size, and what “full” means
Amerisleep gives a full as 54 by 75 inches, 28.1 square feet, for a room of about 9.5 by 10.5 feet. The same chart lists a twin at 38 by 74 inches, so a full is 16 inches wider than a twin and 1 inch longer.
Worked example: sleeping height and storage under the bed
These are our own calculations. We assume a 10 inch mattress. That figure is an example; measure your own.
| Frame | Frame height | Top of mattress from floor |
|---|---|---|
| DUMMUP 4 inch | 4 in | 4 + 10 = 14 in |
| SHOANED 14 inch | 14 in | 14 + 10 = 24 in |
| ITIMIDI 14 inch | 14 in | 14 + 10 = 24 in |
A bed whose top is 14 inches off the floor is a floor-style bed and can be hard to stand up from for some people; 24 inches is closer to a conventional bed height. Both are our reading of the arithmetic, not a published standard.
Storage. The SHOANED listing says a 14 inch frame gives 12 inches of under-bed space. The usable volume under a full frame is at most 12 by 54 by 75, which is 48,600 cubic inches, or 28.1 cubic feet when you divide by 1,728. That is an upper bound; legs and cross bars take some of it, so you will fit less. As a comparison, an under-bed bin 6 inches high would fit under the SHOANED frame twice stacked, but not under the 4 inch frame at all.
What the listings say
DUMMUP 4 Inch Full Bed Frame Heavy Duty Metal Low Profile Platform (ASIN B0DP7FDMTV). The table gives 75 by 54 by 4 inches in one row and 74.8 by 53.94 by 4 inches in another, a weight of 20.5 pounds, a size of full and a rating of 3,600 pounds. The bullets say steel slats and reinforced legs, a 4 inch height, noise-free design and assembly in under 30 minutes. Best for: a low bed for someone who wants to sleep near the floor. Watch out: the bullet text says “queen bed frame” and “mattress and box spring” in places, although the listing is full size; read the table, not the bullets, and note the frame is 0.06 inch narrower and 0.2 inch shorter than the mattress.
SHOANED 14 Inch Metal Bed Frame, Full Size, with Headboard, black (ASIN B0DSL3X9P7). The table gives 74.5 by 53.5 by 14 inches, a weight of 33.4 pounds, a headboard and a rating of 3,000 pounds. The bullets give nine reinforced legs, rubber feet, 12 inches of under-bed storage and no box spring. Best for: someone who wants the headboard in the same box. Watch out: the frame is 0.5 inch narrower than the mattress; the headboard is metal and the listing does not give its height.
ITIMIDI 14 Inch Full Platform Bed, Heavy Duty Steel, White (ASIN B0D5B19NKH). The table gives 74.65 by 53.5 by 14 inches, a weight of 34.1 pounds and a rating of 3,500 pounds; it lists the mattress as L75 by W54. The bullets give nine reinforced legs, rounded corners, three pre-drilled holes for a DIY headboard, mattress gaskets, a white matte finish and “plenty of storage space”. Best for: a white frame and a headboard of your choice. Watch out: no under-bed clearance figure is given, only the 14 inch overall height.
How the three compare
| Listing | Frame height | Under-bed clearance | Headboard | Weight | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DUMMUP | 4 in | None stated | No | 20.5 lb | 3,600 lb |
| SHOANED | 14 in | 12 in | Yes, metal | 33.4 lb | 3,000 lb |
| ITIMIDI | 14 in | Not stated | Holes only | 34.1 lb | 3,500 lb |
How to choose
Pick the height first. Use the table: 14 inches with a 10 inch mattress is a floor bed; 24 inches is conventional.
Then check the storage claim. Only SHOANED states an under-bed number; ask for the other two.
Check the size match. A frame 0.5 inch narrower than the mattress is normal; one more than an inch narrower may let the mattress sag at the edge.
Decide on a headboard. SHOANED includes one; ITIMIDI has holes for one. For wall-mounted options see headboards for queen beds, which covers mounting types that apply to a full as well.
Full, twin or queen: when to step up
A full is 28.1 square feet of mattress per Amerisleep, which is 8.6 square feet more than a twin (19.5) and 5.2 square feet less than a queen (33.3). One adult sleeping alone has 54 inches of width on a full; two adults have 27 inches each, our arithmetic, which is less than the 38 inches a twin gives one sleeper.
The frame floor area follows the mattress. The SHOANED frame at 74.5 by 53.5 inches takes 27.7 square feet, which is 27.7 percent of a 9.5 by 10.5 foot room (99.75 square feet), the room Amerisleep suggests for a full. In a smaller room the same bed takes proportionally more.
If you are choosing between a full and a queen for one sleeper, the extra 5.2 square feet of mattress is also 5.2 square feet more floor taken in the room, so the frame matters less than the room. Read queensize bed for that size, and twin size mattress frame if a full is more than you need.
Checking the fit when the box arrives
Measure the mattress itself before you assemble. Mattress makers differ by about an inch, and the three frames here are listed 0.06 to 0.5 inch narrower than the 54 inch size. Lay the mattress on the assembled slats and look at the four corners: it should sit inside or just past the stoppers, with no more than about half an inch showing on any side. If the mattress is a full XL or a different size, return the frame before you attach a headboard.
Press down along the middle of the slats with your hand. A frame that moves or clicks under hand pressure will be louder with a sleeper on it; tighten the screws and check again, and contact the seller if it does not settle. None of the listings gives a slat spacing, so it is also worth looking at the gaps between slats against the guidance from your mattress maker.
Mistakes to avoid
Trusting the bullets over the table. The DUMMUP bullets mention a queen frame and a box spring although it is a full-size, no box spring design.
Counting the frame height as storage. SHOANED is 14 inches tall and has 12 inches of storage.
Forgetting a 4 inch bed has no storage. Anything under it must be flat enough to slide in, and the listing does not state a clearance.
Treating a rating as a promise. The three ratings are from the sellers and are not on the same basis.
When a different frame is better
If you need real drawers, see bed frame with storage. If you want a lower, sturdier wood frame, see platform bed frame. For a twin, read twin size mattress frame. For a bigger bed in the same style, see queensize bed.
