Quick answer
Look for the material line in the table and the bullets, not the title. A genuinely solid pine dresser says “solid pine” in both; a mahogany piece that says “solids and veneers” is part solid wood and part veneer, which is normal for furniture. Expect real wood to be heavy: the three listings below weigh 24, 58.3 and 152 pounds. Anchor anything 27 inches or taller to the wall, and ask for the anti-tip hardware.
What veneer is
Wikipedia describes wood veneer as extremely thin slices of wood glued onto a core panel, typically wood, particle board or medium-density fiberboard, which lets makers show the look of an expensive wood over a cheaper base. It says veneers can be cut as thin as 0.64 millimeters, about 1/40 of an inch. Veneer is not a fault. On a flat panel it avoids the warping that a wide board can show. What matters is that the listing says so. A title that says “solid wood” over a table that says “engineered wood” is a mismatch to ask about.
How to read a listing for solid wood
The material line. Look for the table’s material, such as “Pine Wood”, and the bullets’ words: solid pine, mahogany solids and veneers, distressed waxed pine.
The construction line. Dovetail drawers, ball-bearing glides and solid frame parts are things a listing can state. The Alpine listing says English dovetail drawer construction and metal ball-bearing glides.
The weight. Solid wood is dense. A 9-drawer chest at 58.3 pounds is 6.5 pounds per drawer (58.3 divided by 9); a 6-drawer mahogany dresser at 152 pounds is 25.3 pounds per drawer (152 divided by 6). Compare that with a 6-drawer fabric dresser at 20.4 pounds, or 3.4 pounds per drawer (20.4 divided by 6).
The finish. A distressed or waxed finish, as on the pine chest, shows grain and wear on purpose. If you want a clean surface, look for a different finish.
Tip-over safety
The CPSC rule for clothing storage units, which we opened on its business-guidance page, applies to free-standing units at least 27 inches tall, weighing at least 30 pounds and with at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage, and requires an anti-tip device packaged with the unit. The page lists dressers among its examples. By the listing numbers, the pine chest (29.92 inches, 58.3 pounds) and the mahogany dresser (32 inches, 152 pounds) are over the height and weight lines, and the bedside chest (22.44 inches, 24 pounds) is under both. The Alpine listing says its glides prevent the piece from tipping over. We read that as the seller’s claim, not as a replacement for an anti-tip device: anchor it either way.
Worked example: a 60 inch dresser at the foot of a bed
Say the room is 10 by 10 feet, which is 120 by 120 inches, and the bed is a queen, 80 inches long (Amerisleep). Amerisleep advises at least 24 inches of clearance at the foot. With the head of the bed on one wall, 120 minus 80 leaves 40 inches. The Alpine dresser is 18 inches deep, so 40 minus 18 leaves 22 inches, which is 2 inches short of the 24 inch guide. The pine chest is 15.75 inches deep, so it leaves 24.25 inches, which just meets it. In this room the 60 inch mahogany dresser belongs on a side wall, not at the foot.

We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The Alpine listing shows “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so its cart button is hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened it.

Moving a heavy dresser
Weight decides who can carry it. Split between two people, the 152 pound Alpine is 76 pounds each (152 divided by 2), the 58.3 pound Corona is 29.2 pounds each and the 24 pound Panama is 12 pounds each. Remove the drawers first if the maker allows it, because drawers are loose weight, and carry the carcass last. Check the clear width of the doorway against the 60 inch width of the Alpine, which must go through on its end, and against its 18 inch depth.
Mistakes to avoid
Trusting “solid wood” in the title. Read the material line.
Ignoring the weight. A 152 pound dresser needs two carriers and a clear stair path.
Putting it at the foot of a small room. An 18 inch deep dresser leaves 22 inches in the 10 by 10 foot example.
Skipping the anchor. The Alpine listing’s tip-over claim does not replace an anti-tip device.
Loading it blindly. The Panama listing mentions a 5 kilogram limit without saying what it applies to; ask.
