Quick answer

Choose an armoire by its depth and its height. Depth decides whether clothes on hangers fit: closet guides give 24 inches as comfortable and 20 inches as a usable minimum, and the two wood armoires below are 16.7 and 19.7 inches deep. Height decides whether you can assemble it: a 75 inch cabinet tipped upright in a room with a 96 inch ceiling needs about 77.5 inches of diagonal, which fits with 18.5 inches to spare. Anchor any tall armoire to the wall.

Three kinds of “armoire” on Amazon

Wood armoire. Two doors, a hanging bar and a couple of drawers, 72 inches tall and about 110 pounds. It is the traditional kind, it sits on legs and at about 110 pounds it is a two-person carry.

Engineered-wood farmhouse armoire. Similar size, about 75 inches tall and 115 pounds, with a distressed finish and in one listing an LED that switches on when a door opens.

Portable fabric armoire. A metal-tube frame with a fabric cover and a zipper. It is 14.55 pounds in the listing below, which is a seventh of the wood armoires, and it is closer to a clothing rack with a cover than to furniture.

The depth test

The Dimensions.com guide to closet depths says 24 inches is the comfortable recommended depth for a closet and that depths as narrow as 20 inches can be used. Those figures are for built-in closets, but they are the best published yardstick for hanging clothes. The wood armoire below is 16.7 inches deep, which is 3.3 inches below the 20 inch minimum (20 minus 16.7). The farmhouse armoire is 19.7 inches deep, 0.3 inches below. The fabric armoire is 18.11 inches deep, 1.89 inches below.

What that means in practice depends on the rod. The HODEDAH listing says the clothing bar stretches across the entire interior width of the cabinet, so clothes hang facing the doors with the shoulders of each garment inside the 16.7 inch depth. A shallow armoire can work for shirts and light jackets and may press bulky coats against the doors.

Worked example: tipping a 75 inch armoire upright

Say the room has a 96 inch ceiling (an assumption, so measure yours) and the armoire is the 75 inch farmhouse model, 19.7 inches deep, which arrives in flat boxes and is assembled lying down. When you stand it up it swings through a diagonal. The diagonal is the square root of (75 squared plus 19.7 squared), which is the square root of (5,625 plus 388.1), or about 77.5 inches. The ceiling is 96 inches, so 96 minus 77.5 leaves 18.5 inches. It tips up with room to spare; a room with a 78 inch soffit or a hanging light fixture would not.

Now the rod. Bob Vila’s closet guide puts the rod for long garments at 66 inches above the floor. For a 72 inch cabinet with legs and a top panel, the usable rod height depends on interior framing the listing does not give, so ask before you count on long coats.

Check the federal rule and anchor it

The CPSC rule for clothing storage units covers free-standing units that are at least 27 inches tall, weigh at least 30 pounds and have at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage, and the page we opened lists armoires among its examples. By the listing numbers, the HODEDAH armoire (72 inches, 110 pounds, a storage volume of 20 cubic feet) and the farmhouse armoire (75 inches, 115 pounds) are over the height and weight lines. The portable fabric armoire at 14.55 pounds is under the weight line. The rule is a manufacturer requirement and the listings do not state compliance, so look for a stated anti-tip kit and anchor the cabinet to the wall.

We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The two wood listings show “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so their cart buttons are hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened them.

HODEDAH 2-door wood wardrobe with clothing rod and 2 drawers, beech. The table gives 16.7 inches deep, 32 wide, 72 high, 110 pounds, a storage volume of 20 cubic feet, two doors and two drawers. The bullets give an assembled size of 72 by 31.5 by 17 inches, a clothing bar across the entire interior width and drawers on metal rollers. The table also lists a “weight capacity maximum” of 20 pounds, which we cannot reconcile with a 20 cubic foot cabinet, so ask what it refers to. Best for: a narrow wall in a small room. Watch out: the 16.7 inch depth.

75 inch farmhouse 2-door armoire with LED, antique white and brown. The table gives 19.7 inches deep, 31.5 wide, 75 high and 115 pounds, with an engineered wood and metal build. The bullets describe a door light that switches on when a door opens and a distressed finish. Best for: a bedroom that wants a decorative cabinet. Watch out: engineered wood and the 115 pound weight.

Large portable wardrobe armoire with 4 hanging rods and drawers. The table gives 18.11 inches deep, 66.93 wide, 67.72 high and 14.55 pounds; the bullets give a metal tube frame, plastic joints and a zippered cover. The title calls it an armoire. Best for: a dorm or a rental where weight and cost matter more than looks. Watch out: it is fabric and tube, not furniture.

Getting it into the room

The wood armoires are heavy: 110 and 115 pounds. Split between two carriers that is 55 and 57.5 pounds each (110 divided by 2, 115 divided by 2), before the stairs. The fabric one is 14.55 pounds, which one person can carry, but a 66.93 inch long box is awkward in a stairwell. Measure the stairwell and the doorway against the longest box, not against the assembled cabinet, and leave the doors and drawers in until the cabinet is in place.

Mistakes to avoid

Judging an armoire by its width. The 32 inch cabinet has one bar of about 32 inches; the 66.93 inch fabric one has four rods.

Forgetting the tip-up. Measure the ceiling and any light fixture before you assemble a tall piece.

Skipping the anchor. A cabinet that is 72 to 75 inches tall should be fixed to the wall.

Assuming armoire means wood. The word is used for fabric closets too.

When you may not need an armoire

If the room has a closet that is half empty, shelves and rail organizers cost less. If the room is tiny, a wardrobe with a shallower footprint or a tall dresser may serve better; see the wardrobe guide and the dresser buying guide. For the version of this topic aimed at a bigger piece, see the wardrobe closet guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is an armoire used for?

An armoire is a freestanding cabinet for hanging and folded clothes, used where there is no closet or not enough of one.

How deep should an armoire be?

Closet guides give 24 inches as comfortable and 20 as a usable minimum. The two wood armoires we read are 16.7 and 19.7 inches deep.

How tall is an armoire?

The two wood listings are 72 and 75 inches tall. The fabric one is 67.72 inches tall.

Does an armoire need to be anchored?

It should be. The CPSC lists armoires as clothing storage units, and the rule requires an anti-tip device in the box.

Can I fit an armoire in a room with a low ceiling?

Check the diagonal, not just the height. A 75 inch by 19.7 inch cabinet swings through about 77.5 inches when tipped upright.
