Seats depend on circumference, which is 3.14 times the diameter. As our own planning estimate, not a standard, allow about 24 inches of table edge per adult.

• 36 inch table: 3.14 × 36 ≈ 113 inches, which is 113 ÷ 4 ≈ 28.3 inches per person for four, or 113 ÷ 2 ≈ 56.5 inches for two.
• 47.24 inch table: about 148 inches, which is 148 ÷ 6 ≈ 24.7 inches per person for six.

So the 47 inch table is roomy for four. The 36 inch table holds four people only at a squeeze, though 28.3 inches each is above our 24 inch figure. The six-chair set leaves just 24.7 inches each.

Glass thickness and weight

A glass top rests on its base, so the footprint of the base matters for stability. The listings do not give base widths or how the top is attached, so ask.

The listing gives 47.24 by 47.24 by 29.13 inches, a listed weight of 177.8 pounds, a 0.3 inch tempered glass top, X-design legs and six velvet chairs, and says it fits 4 to 6 people. Good for: a household that wants six seats at a glass table. Keep in mind: the listing said it was currently unavailable on the day we read it, and 24.7 inches per person for six is tight. The page did not show an Add to Cart button.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. A dining area is 10 feet (120 inches) wide. The table sits in the middle with chairs all round.

Floor needed is the diameter plus two pull-out zones of 24 inches (our estimate). For the 47.25 inch table, that is 47.25 + 48 = 95.25 inches, leaving 120 − 95.25 = 24.75 inches. That is 36 − 24.75 = 11.25 inches short of the U.S. Access Board’s 36 inch route yardstick, a public-building reference and only a guide for a home. For the 36 inch table, 36 + 48 = 84 inches leaves 120 − 84 = 36 inches, which just meets it.

Seats. The 47.25 inch table gives 37 inches each for four. The 36 inch table gives 28.3 each for four.

Weight. The Nimaolt set is 177.8 pounds, which is 177.8 − 150 = 27.8 pounds heavier than the Kootlena set. Two carriers share 177.8 ÷ 2 ≈ 89 pounds each.

Glass. The Kootlena’s 0.39 inch top is 0.39 − 0.3 = 0.09 inch thicker than the Nimaolt’s.
