Living Room Chair Slipcovers: How to Measure and Fit

Quick answer

Living room chair slipcovers are stretch covers sized by ranges, and sellers use different measurements for the same chair. One states overall chair width, another states the “sitting width” between the arms and a third adds the cushion width. So measure your chair several ways (overall height, overall width, length or depth, cushion width and sitting width), then compare each number with the ranges stated on the listing before you buy.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a one-piece banquet armchair cover stated by length, width and height, a two-piece club chair cover that also states cushion width and a two-piece velvet cover stated by sitting width. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tried any of them on a chair. All numbers come from the listings.

One piece or two

A one-piece cover goes over the whole chair in a single stretch sheet. A two-piece cover has a base cover for the body of the chair and a separate cover for the seat cushion. One piece is faster to fit. Two pieces usually stay in place better and let you wash the cushion cover separately.

The SONNACH cover is one piece with an elastic edge. The NILUOH and H.VERSAILTEX covers are two pieces. The H.VERSAILTEX listing says its pieces are a base cover and a cushion cover, sewn with thick elastic loops at the bottom edges.

Measure the chair

Use inches and a soft tape.

1. Overall height: from the floor to the top of the back.
2. Overall width: across the widest point, usually outside one arm to outside the other.
3. Length or depth: from the back of the chair to the front of the seat.
4. Cushion width: across the seat cushion between the arms, if the cushion is loose.
5. Sitting width: the space between the two arms.

Sellers choose which of these to state. Read the definition on each listing before you compare numbers.

How the listings state fit

The SONNACH listing gives a one-size-fits-most range: length 23 to 29.5 inches, width 23.6 to 33.5 inches and height 27.5 to 33.5 inches. The NILUOH listing gives a chair height of 27.6 to 34.5 inches, a chair width of 27.6 to 31.5 inches and a cushion width of 18 to 22 inches. The H.VERSAILTEX listing gives a sitting width of 31 to 49 inches for its chair slipcovers.

So the first two use overall measurements and the third uses sitting width, which is a different number for the same chair.

Fabric and stretch

The SONNACH cover is velvet with a stretch that the seller says is non-pilling and wrinkle-free. The NILUOH cover is 92 percent polyester and 8 percent spandex jacquard with two-way stretch. The H.VERSAILTEX cover is 85 percent polyester and 15 percent spandex velvet. A higher spandex share usually means more give, but the stated ranges are the real limits.

Velvet looks rich and feels warm. Jacquard hides small marks with its pattern.

Holding the cover in place

Covers creep. The SONNACH listing says it has anti-slip features and an elastic edge. The H.VERSAILTEX listing describes elastic loops around the bottom and separate base and cushion covers. The NILUOH listing gives no anchoring details in the text we read.

If a cover keeps moving, foam anchors or tucked rolled towels in the seams help.

Care

The H.VERSAILTEX listing says to machine wash each piece separately in cold water on the gentle cycle, without bleach. The NILUOH listing says machine wash cold, separately, on the gentle cycle with mild detergent and no bleach. The SONNACH listing says to wash in cold water on the gentle cycle and tumble dry on low heat.

Follow the label on the cover you receive. A cover that shrinks will not fit.

Weight and feel

The covers are light: 1.28 pounds for the SONNACH, 1.94 pounds for the NILUOH and 2.82 pounds for the H.VERSAILTEX. A heavier cover usually has more fabric, but weight is not a measure of quality.

The listing gives a chair height of 27.6 to 34.5 inches, a chair width of 27.6 to 31.5 inches, a cushion width of 18 to 22 inches, 92 percent polyester and 8 percent spandex and a listed weight of 1.94 pounds. Good for: a club or tub chair with a loose seat cushion. Keep in mind: the width range is narrower than the SONNACH’s. The page showed an Add to Cart button.

H.VERSAILTEX Rich Velvet Stretch 2-piece chair slipcover with arms, grey. The listing gives a sitting width of 31 to 49 inches, velvet plush fabric, a base cover and a cushion cover, elastic bottom loops, 85 percent polyester and 15 percent spandex and a listed weight of 2.82 pounds. Good for: a wide chair or loveseat-size seat where the sitting width is known. Keep in mind: the listing’s title mentions a width up to 49 inches, and the size line 38.98 by 48.82 by 35.04 inches looks like a large piece. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. Your armchair measures 30 inches overall width, 29 inches overall height, 26 inches in length, a 21 inch cushion and 20 inches between the arms.

SONNACH. Width 30 is inside 23.6 to 33.5, height 29 is inside 27.5 to 33.5 and length 26 is inside 23 to 29.5. It fits.

NILUOH. Height 29 is inside 27.6 to 34.5, width 30 is inside 27.6 to 31.5 and the 21 inch cushion is inside 18 to 22. It fits, with only 31.5 − 30 = 1.5 inches to spare on width.

H.VERSAILTEX. The sitting width of 20 inches is 31 − 20 = 11 inches below the 31 inch minimum, so it is for a much wider seat. It does not fit.

Now a second chair, a wide club chair 36 inches across. The SONNACH is 36 − 33.5 = 2.5 inches too narrow and the NILUOH 36 − 31.5 = 4.5 inches too narrow. A sitting width of 28 inches is still 3 inches below the H.VERSAILTEX’s 31 inch minimum.

The example shows that the same chair can pass one listing and fail another depending on what the seller measures.

Red flags in listings

A size range with no definition of what is measured, a listing that refers to a sofa in the photos for a chair cover and a cover whose package size is given as 4 by 3 by 3.98 inches are signs to ask. Also check whether the cover is a chair cover or a sofa cover, because the same brand sells both.

Who should skip slipcovers

If the chair’s frame is broken or the padding has collapsed, a cover only hides it. If your chair is unusual in shape, such as a wingback or a chair with a skirt, a generic stretch cover may not fit. If you only want protection from pet hair, a fitted throw is simpler.
