Two ways to seat six

The first way puts three chairs on each long side. That needs a table long enough for three chairs side by side, which is about 66 to 72 inches with average chairs. Nobody sits at the ends, so the table can be narrower.

The second way puts two chairs on each long side and one at each end. That works on a table around 54 inches long, and it gives the people at the ends a view down the table. The trade-off is that end chairs take room from the walkway at each end.

The numbers come from our own planning estimate of about 24 inches of table edge per adult. A 71 inch table therefore gives 71 ÷ 24 ≈ 3 seats per long side. With two more at the ends, the table can seat eight, which matches the “6 to 8 people” claim in the 71 inch listing.

Chair width

Chair width decides whether three chairs fit on one side. The Merax listing gives each chair as 19.69 inches wide. Three chairs take 3 × 19.69 = 59.07 inches of the 70.28 inch table, leaving 70.28 − 59.07 = 11.21 inches between and beside them. The Crosley Joanna listing gives each chair as 18.25 inches wide. Three chairs take 3 × 18.25 = 54.75 inches of the 71.63 inch table, leaving 71.63 − 54.75 = 16.88 inches.

The 71 inch listing does not give a chair width in the text we read. If chair arms or a wide back are part of the design, allow more.

Table capacity and depth

The table width matters for plates and serving dishes. The listings give 31.5 inches for the 71 inch table, 33.07 inches for the Merax table and 35.38 inches for the Crosley table. A deeper table is easier to share dishes across, but it needs more floor.

The table’s weight capacity also varies. The Merax listing gives a capacity of 300 pounds. The Crosley listing gives a weight capacity of 100 pounds for its fixed rectangular top. If you want to sit or lean on the table, or put heavy platters on it, the lower figure is worth noting. Capacities are the sellers’ figures, and we have not verified them.

Materials and chairs

The 71 inch set has an engineered wood top with a faux marble finish and six chairs upholstered in white leatherette over foam, with non-marking floor pads. The Merax set is listed as solid rubberwood with a walnut finish and upholstered fabric seats and a spindle Windsor-style back. The Crosley set has a knotty oak finish with white wire-brushing and chairs upholstered in creme linen with an X-shaped back.

Leatherette and faux marble wipe clean, while linen and fabric seats are warmer but may stain. A spindle back is lighter and lets you see through the chair, and an upholstered back gives more support. Choose by how the family eats.

Delivery and weight

A 7-piece set is heavy and ships in several boxes. The Merax listing gives 167.1 pounds and the Crosley listing 215 pounds. The 71 inch listing gives 96 pounds and notes multi-box delivery. Check whether the carrier brings the boxes inside, and whether you need to be home for an appointment.

The Crosley listing also shows a size line of 126 by 90 by 39.88 inches, which does not match the 71.63 inch table and looks like a packed or arranged size. Use the table and chair dimensions in the bullets, and ask the seller if you need the carton sizes.

Keep in mind: no chair width is given in the text we read, and faux marble and leatherette are finishes whose wear over the years we cannot judge. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.

Good for: a household that wants a deeper table and full upholstered chairs. Keep in mind: the weight capacity is low, and the size line in the fields (126 by 90 inches) does not describe the table. A worked example

These numbers are invented. A dining room is 10 feet (120 inches) wide. The table will sit in the middle with three chairs on each long side.

Room width needed is the table width plus two 24-inch pull-out zones (our planning estimate).

• 71 inch set: 31.5 + 48 = 79.5 inches, leaving 120 − 79.5 = 40.5 inches.
• Merax: 33.07 + 48 = 81.07 inches, leaving 120 − 81.07 = 38.93 inches.
• Crosley: 35.38 + 48 = 83.38 inches, leaving 120 − 83.38 = 36.62 inches.

All three leave at least the Access Board’s 36 inch route yardstick, which is a public-building reference and only a guide for a home. The Crosley only just clears it.

Now try a 9 foot (108 inch) room. The leftovers are 108 − 79.5 = 28.5, 108 − 81.07 = 26.93 and 108 − 83.38 = 24.62 inches, all short of the yardstick. In that room you would seat only four at the table or put one long side against the wall, which removes one pull-out zone.

Length: a 71 inch table in a room 144 inches long leaves 144 − 71 = 73 inches, plenty for end chairs.

Red flags in listings

Sets with no chair width, a size field that shows carton sizes, table weight capacities that are missing or very low, and photos that show eight chairs for a set of six are signs to ask. Also check that “set for 6” includes six chairs, not four chairs and a bench.

Who should skip a six-chair set

If you seat six only a few times a year, a smaller table with a leaf and four chairs takes less floor most days. If the room is under 10 feet wide, a long table leaves little route. If you want to choose your own chairs, buy a table and chairs separately.
