Quick answer
Restaurant seating is bought in quantity and used hard, so the numbers that matter are the seat size, the stacking, the weight rating, the floor protection and how easily the chair cleans. Many consumer listings borrow commercial words such as “commercial-grade”, and the best evidence is a stated rating, a stated frame gauge or a stated test. This guide covers chairs, which is what the three listings we read are; tables are a separate decision.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-10-02: the Amazon Basics stackable metal dining chairs 4-pack (ASIN B08XWQN5H3), the Flash Furniture Gael indoor and outdoor galvanized steel restaurant chairs set of 2 (B01J7JP4UK) and the Suzile 4-pack stackable sled-base chairs (B0CZ47H6CD). They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat on any of them, and we do not show prices; check the current price on Amazon. Every number comes from the listings.
This is shopping information, not legal or code advice. For fire, accessibility and occupancy rules in a business, ask your local authority.
For event chairs, see banquet chairs. For home sets, see indoor cafe table and chairs, pub stools and tables and outdoor patio chairs. For bar seating, see counter height bar stools.
Chair size
The Amazon Basics chair is 20.1 inches deep, 17.1 wide and 33.5 high, with a seat height of 17 inches. The Flash Gael chair is 15.5 inches wide, 20 deep and 33.25 high, with a seat of 15.5 wide, 14 deep and 18.5 high and a back 16.5 high. The Suzile listing gives 20.87 by 20.47 by 20.47 inches, which cannot be the height of a chair that is meant to seat a person, and a second size of 31.5 inches.
The Gael seat is the smallest of the three. As a rule of thumb, a seat 14 inches deep suits an average adult for a meal and not for a long sit. The Amazon Basics chair has a metal seat with a foam fill listed in its detail field, so check whether it has padding.
Choosing the seat count
Restaurants plan by seats per square foot, and the right number depends on your service style and local rules. As an illustration, not a standard: with chairs 17 inches wide at a four-top that is 30 by 30 inches, you give each diner a 30 inch side of the table. A square 30 inch table with four chairs, pulled out, needs about 30 + 2 × 20 = 70 inches in each direction (the table plus a 20 inch deep chair on each side).
Here are illustrative numbers. A room of 20 feet by 12 feet is 240 square feet. If a four-top with chairs takes about 70 × 70 inches, which is 4,900 square inches or 34 square feet, then 240 ÷ 34 ≈ 7 four-tops before aisles. After aisles, which take a large share of the floor, the count is lower. Always check your layout and the rules for your area.
Stacking
The Amazon Basics listing says stackable, space saving and easy to store, with plastic pads on the X bar and feet to protect the floor. The Suzile listing says stackable chairs with a sled base. The Gael listing did not describe stacking in the text we read.
Stacking saves floor space between services, and the listings do not give a stack height or a safe stack count. Ask the seller if you need to fit a storage closet.
Weight rating
The Amazon Basics listing says the X bar structure holds up to 330 pounds. The Suzile title says 300 pounds capacity. The Gael listing did not give a rating in the text we read.
For example, a 250 pound guest on a 300 pound rating has 50 pounds of headroom, 17 percent. On 330 pounds it is 80 pounds, 24 percent. Restaurant chairs are sat on, tipped and dragged, so a bigger margin helps. These are the sellers’ figures, and we have not verified them.
“Commercial grade” claims
The Flash Gael listing says commercial-grade galvanized steel restaurant chairs, with a weather-resistant galvanized steel frame and a powder-coated finish. The Amazon Basics listing says indoor and outdoor, water and rust resistant, in matte black. The Suzile listing says suitable for office training, waiting rooms, dining, lobbies, hospitals and weddings.
“Commercial grade” is a seller’s phrase and has no single definition. Better evidence is a stated frame thickness, a stated test or a warranty for commercial use, none of which these listings give in the text we read. Ask the seller what the commercial claim is based on, and what the warranty covers if you use the chair in a business.
Material and care
The Amazon Basics chair is alloy steel. The Gael chair is galvanized steel with a plastic part (the material field says alloy steel and plastic). The Suzile chair is polypropylene with a steel sled base and a spine-aligned back.
Metal chairs are easy to wipe and can scratch the floor if the pads wear out. Plastic is light and can crack at stress points, which is a general property and not a claim from the listings. If chairs are used outdoors, check the finish: the Gael and Amazon Basics listings say weather resistant, and the Suzile says outdoor plastic chairs.
Weight of the chair
The Amazon Basics chair weighs 9.4 pounds. The Gael and Suzile weights were not recorded. A light chair is easy to move and to carry for staff, and light chairs tip more easily, so look at the base.
Floor protection
The Amazon Basics listing mentions plastic pads on the X bar and on the feet. Pads wear and need replacing, and in a restaurant, that is a regular job. The Gael and Suzile listings did not describe their feet in the text we read.
Assembly
The Suzile listing says all hardware and tools are included and the assembly takes about 15 minutes. The Amazon Basics listing says easy assembly in 3 steps. For a large order, assembly time adds up: 40 chairs at 15 minutes each is 10 hours, which is our simple multiplication. Ask whether pre-assembled chairs are available.

Mistakes to avoid
Do not rely on the words “commercial grade”. Do not forget to plan aisles. Do not skip a floor protection check. And do not buy in quantity before you have sat in one.
Who should skip these
If you run a business with fixed rules, ask the authority and a commercial supplier about approved furniture. If you want upholstered, comfortable seating for long meals, a padded chair is better. If you want tables as well, see the other guides.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a chair commercial grade?
There is no single definition. Look for a stated weight rating, frame thickness and a business-use warranty.
How much weight can restaurant chairs hold?
The listings say 330 and 300 pounds, and one gave no rating. Those are the sellers’ figures.
Should restaurant chairs stack?
Stacking saves storage space. Two of the three listings say stackable.
How big is a restaurant chair?
The three we read are about 15.5 to 17.1 inches wide and 20 inches deep, with overall heights of 33 to 34 inches.
Can I use home chairs in a restaurant?
Maybe, but check ratings, warranties and local rules.
Bottom line
Choose restaurant chairs by seat size, stacking, weight rating and what the “commercial” claim is based on. Of the three listings, the Amazon Basics is the 330 pound stackable chair with a clear seat height, the Flash Gael is the commercial-claim chair with the smallest seat and no rating recorded and the Suzile is the 300 pound stackable plastic chair with unusable size fields. Ask for the warranty terms for business use.
