“Solid wood” on a dining set is rarely a promise about every part. A set may have solid legs with an MDF or veneered top, or a solid frame with an engineered wood seat. To buy well, read which parts are solid, check that the table is long or wide enough for six (about 70 inches long for a rectangle, or a round table near 48 inches or more), and plan for a heavy delivery.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a 7-piece rubberwood set with a 60 inch table and oak finish, a 7-piece round set with solid rubberwood and engineered wood and a 72 inch solid wood table sold with two 60 inch benches. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat at any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

What “solid wood” can mean

Sellers use the phrase in three ways. It can mean every part is solid wood. It can mean the legs or frame are solid and the top is a veneer or engineered board. Or it can mean a solid wood frame with a foam seat.

The listings we read show the mix. The East West listing names “Asian solid wood, commonly recognized as Rubber Wood,” for the set, with wooden seats and legs and a wooden slat back. The Baxton Studio Eira listing says the set is constructed from solid rubberwood and engineered wood, with fabric-padded chairs. The Plank+Beam listing says the tabletop has three solid wood panels and solid wood legs.

So read the material line for the top, the legs and the chairs separately.

Species and color

Rubberwood appears in two of the three listings. It is a hardwood commonly used in furniture. The East West set is finished in oak tone, which is a color on rubberwood, not the oak tree. The Plank+Beam listing says solid wood with a wirebrush finish and does not name the species in the text we read, though its sibling listings name pine.

If you want a specific species, ask, and ignore the color name in the title.

Table size for six

As our own planning estimate, not a standard, allow about 24 inches of table edge per adult. A rectangular table that seats six with three per long side needs about 70 inches of length, and with two per side and one at each end about 54 inches.

The East West table is 60 by 36 inches, which gives 60 ÷ 24 = 2.5 per long side, so two per side plus one at each end makes six. The Plank+Beam table is 72 inches long, so 72 ÷ 24 = 3 per long side. The Baxton Studio table is round at 44.9 inches across, with a circumference of 3.14 × 44.9 ≈ 141 inches, so six seats get 141 ÷ 6 = 23.5 inches each, slightly under our estimate.

Benches instead of chairs

The Plank+Beam listing pairs the table with two 60 by 14 by 17.75 inch benches, not chairs. A 60 inch bench at 24 inches per adult seats 60 ÷ 24 = 2.5, so two adults comfortably. Two benches seat four, and two more people at the ends makes six. Benches save floor and are solid wood, but they have no backs.

Weight and delivery

Solid wood sets are heavy. The East West set is listed at 183 pounds, the Baxton Studio set at 110.1 pounds. The East West Norfolk table-only listing we also opened gives a minimum required door width of 30 inches. A set this heavy ships in several boxes and needs two people.

Check the carrier, the delivery floor and whether you need to be home.

Table capacity and thickness

Table capacity matters if you seat a crowd. The East West sibling table listing gives a 1.5 inch thick top and a 350 pound maximum recommendation. The three sets we read give no capacity in the text we read for the full set. The figures are the sellers’ and we have not verified them.

A thick top feels solid and resists warping. A thin one may flex.

Finish and care

Wirebrush, oak tone and dark finishes each need different care. Wipe spills promptly, and use coasters and mats under hot items. The listings we read give no care schedule, so ask the seller and follow the label.

Good for: a family that wants an all-wood set with a slat back. Keep in mind: the seats are wood, not padded, and the listing’s chair dimensions are truncated in the text we read. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.

Baxton Studio Eira Modern Grey and Walnut Brown Wood 7-Piece Dining Set. The listing gives a round table of 44.9 by 44.9 by 30 inches, six chairs with a cut-out backrest padded with foam and upholstered in fabric, solid rubberwood and engineered wood, a listed weight of 110.1 pounds and a claim that the round tabletop accommodates up to six. Good for: a square or small room where a round table for six is wanted. Keep in mind: the table gives 23.5 inches per person for six and the listing mixes solid and engineered wood. The page said the same about shipping to Vietnam.

Plank+Beam 72 Inch Farmhouse Dining Table with Two 60 Inch Dining Benches. The listing gives a 72 by 36 by 30 inch table with a top of three solid wood panels and solid wood legs, benches of 60 by 14 by 17.75 inches each and a wirebrush finish. Good for: a family that wants solid panels and a long table with benches. Keep in mind: there are no chairs, and the benches have no back. The page did not show an Add to Cart button, and its availability line was blank.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. A dining room is 12 feet (144 inches) wide and 13 feet (156 inches) long. You want the table in the middle.

Width. For a rectangular table, the room width needed is the table width plus two 24 inch pull-out zones (our estimate). The East West at 36 inches needs 36 + 48 = 84 inches, leaving 144 − 84 = 60 inches. The Plank+Beam at 36 inches is the same. The round Baxton Studio at 44.9 inches needs 44.9 + 48 = 92.9 inches, leaving 144 − 92.9 = 51.1 inches. All clear the U.S. Access Board’s 36 inch route yardstick, a public-building reference and only a guide for a home.

Length. The East West table is 60 inches long, leaving 156 − 60 = 96 inches. The Plank+Beam at 72 inches leaves 156 − 72 = 84 inches, enough for ends with chairs at 24 inches each side, since 84 − 48 = 36 inches.

Seats for six. The East West gets 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6 by our estimate. The Plank+Beam with two benches gets 2 + 2 at the benches plus two end chairs, if you add them, for six. The Baxton Studio gives 23.5 inches each, tight.

Weight. The East West set at 183 pounds is 183 − 110.1 = 72.9 pounds heavier than the Baxton Studio set, which matters for moving and stairs.

Red flags in listings

A “solid wood” headline with MDF or engineered wood in the material line, a chair dimension that is cut off or missing, a color name used as a species and a table listing that names a set in its model field are signs to ask. Also check that the price you see is for the full set and not the table alone.

Who should skip a solid wood set

If you move often, a heavy solid wood set is a burden. If you want a quick delivery, large sets often ship in several boxes. If you want padded chairs, wooden seats are firm; see dining chairs. If the room is tight, a set for six may overwhelm it.
