In a listing, in a box usually means the foam is vacuum-compressed into a carton you can carry in alone. There is no frame to assemble. You unpack it, pat it and wait while the foam expands. The listings describe this as pre-filled, ready to use and no assembly, and the fill is foam, with no springs or wooden frame.

The trade-off is that the foam sofa sits low and soft, and its comfort depends on the foam. A framed sofa in a box exists too, but we did not read one for this guide.

Sizing example: floor space and time

The arithmetic is 79 x 37 = 2,923, divided by 17,280 gives 0.169; 57 x 32 = 1,824, divided by 17,280 gives 0.106; and 57 x 32.7 = 1,864, divided by 17,280 gives 0.108. The WHGBJA’s table lists 78.5 as the depth and 37 as the width, which looks swapped, and its title and size field say 79 inches wide, so we read 79 as the length.

For time, the WHGBJA says to allow 48 to 72 hours after unpacking, and the MAXYOYO says 72 hours to fully rebound. If the sofa is delivered on Monday and opened at once, it is ready by Thursday on the 72 hour reading, which is Monday plus 3 days. That is a typical timeline, not a promise.

Weight and moving

The loveseat weighs 45 lb, the MAXYOYO 40 lb and the WHGBJA 60 lb. All three are light enough to move from room to room, which the loveseat listing describes as easy to move for renters. A framed sofa of the same size weighs more. The carton weight and size of these three were not in the rows we read, so ask the seller for the carton before you plan the stairs.

Furniture Academy says the entryway has to be wider than at least one of a piece’s depth, height or diagonal depth, and the U.S. Access Board gives 32 inches as a minimum clear width at doorways. A compressed carton is usually much smaller than the sofa, which is the point of the format. The MAXYOYO’s table lists a minimum required door width of 57 inches, which is the sofa’s width and would be a problem for a 32 inch door if it were meant literally, so ask whether that number describes the carton.

Seat height and depth

POVISON’s sofa-comfort guide says most sofas have a seat height of about 17 to 19 inches and a seat depth of about 21 to 24 inches. The loveseat in a box lists a seat height of 18 inches, which is inside the range, with a seat depth of 32 inches. The WHGBJA lists a seat height of 15 inches and a seat depth of 26 inches, which is 2 inches under the bottom of the height range (17 − 15 = 2). The MAXYOYO lists 15.7 inches, 1.3 inches under. A deeper and lower seat is a lounge, which suits sprawling and is harder to stand up from.

Load rating

The WHGBJA says it supports up to 1,200 lb, which is the largest number we read for any sofa, and a seller figure we cannot verify. The other two give no load rating in the rows we read. A foam sofa’s load rating says little about how it holds shape over time, and the fill is the main factor.

Cover and care

All three are corduroy or corded fabric. The WHGBJA says its corduroy is pet-friendly and breathable. The MAXYOYO says its cover is corded upholstery, with a pull-out ottoman, side pockets and a pillow. The loveseat says premium corduroy over a whole foam and memory foam blocks. None of the rows we read gave a care instruction for the cover, so check the label or ask.

The bullets describe memory foam, pet-friendly corduroy, a 60 inch seating area and a 48 to 72 hour expansion. Good for the widest sofa of the three. Keep in mind: the table’s depth and width look swapped, and its size field lists five sizes.

The table gives 32.7 x 57 x 21.6 in, 40 lb, a seat height of 15.7 in and a minimum required door width of 57 in. The bullets describe a hidden pull-out ottoman, a pillow, side pockets and a 72 hour rebound. Good if you want a built-in ottoman. Keep in mind: the 57 inch door width is not credible for a compressed sofa, and it seats one in the table.
