A sofa fits in a bedroom when the room depth minus the bed length minus the sofa depth leaves at least 30 inches. We call that the foot-of-bed test. In an 11 by 12 ft bedroom with a queen bed (60 x 80 in), a sofa about 30 to 34 inches deep leaves about 30 to 34 inches of walkway, which works. A sofa bed that extends 8 inches when opened drops that to 22 inches, which does not.

Decide what the sofa is for

A bedroom sofa usually does one of three jobs. It gives you somewhere to sit while dressing or reading. It holds clothes and bags off the bed. Or it doubles as a guest bed. The job sets the size: a dressing seat needs only a short, shallow piece, while a guest bed needs length and a deck that opens.

If you want a bed first and a sofa second, start with bed with couch instead. This guide is for a room that is a bedroom first.

The foot-of-bed test

Take the room length and subtract the bed and the sofa. Amerisleep’s chart puts a queen mattress at 60 x 80 inches. Retailer guides such as OROA suggest 30 to 36 inches for main walkways and 24 inches or more for minor passages, and Amerisleep advises at least 24 inches of clearance around a bed for comfortable movement. The U.S. Access Board uses 36 inches as a minimum clear width for an accessible route and allows 32 inches at short points. These are guidelines and yardsticks, not rules for your home.

Worked example, an 11 by 12 ft bedroom (132 x 144 in) with the headboard on one 132 in wall and the bed 80 in long:

1. Room length 144 in minus the bed 80 in leaves 64 in at the foot.
2. Subtract the sofa depth to get the walkway left.
3. Compare with 30 in for a main path and 24 in for a minor one.

The last row is the catch. The Amazon Basics listing gives 71.5 x 33.5 in as a sofa and 71.5 x 42 in as a bed, which is 8.5 inches deeper. On its own that is small, but it takes the walkway from 30.5 inches to 22 inches, below the 24 inch minimum. If you will open it only for guests, that may be acceptable; if you open it every night, it is not.

Check the width against the bed

Width matters for looks and for doors. The queen bed is 60 inches wide, so a sofa at the foot looks balanced when it is about that wide.

• Vesgantti: 47.64 in is 12.36 inches narrower than the bed, which leaves 6.18 inches on each side if centered.
• KGOPK: 59.44 in is 0.56 inch narrower, which reads as nearly matching.
• Amazon Basics: 71.5 in is 11.5 inches wider, so it overhangs 5.75 inches on each side and may collide with nightstands. See nightstands for sizing those.

If the bed uses underbed drawers, check that the drawers can still open past the sofa; see bed frame with storage.

Try the side-wall layout

If the foot of the bed is too tight, put the sofa on a side wall. Keep the same room and push the bed against one 144 inch wall, so the room width of 132 inches minus the 60 inch bed leaves 72 inches. The sofa sits on the opposite wall:

Keep in mind: the table we read shows no weight, so you cannot plan the carry, and the 26.57 in height is low, so check whether the back sits below a windowsill or a headboard.

The table gives 33.5 x 71.5 x 32 in as a sofa, 70.4 lb, and a 19.5 in seat depth, and the bullets give 71.5 x 42 x 17 in as a bed with a 600 lb capacity and about 20 minutes of assembly. Good if the bedroom also serves as a guest room. Keep in mind: it is the widest of the three, and opened as a bed it breaks the 24 inch minimum in the foot-of-bed layout.

When not to put a sofa in the bedroom

• Your foot-of-bed walkway is under 24 inches after the sofa. Use a bench or a storage ottoman.
• The room is small enough that the sofa would be the largest piece after the bed. A bench or a chair gives a seat with a lighter footprint.
• The sofa would block a closet door, window access or a radiator. Measure the swing, not just the floor.
