Quick answer

A small dining table for two usually measures between 24 and 36 inches on a side, and the difference matters more than it sounds: a 24 inch round table gives two people about 226 square inches each, while a 35.5 inch square table gives each about 630 square inches. Before buying, check the table size (and what two place settings need), the floor space for the table plus chairs pulled out and whether the chairs tuck under the table.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a 3-piece set with a 35.5 inch square table, a 3-piece set with a 24 inch round table and a 27.6 inch square bamboo table sold without chairs. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat at any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

What two people need on a table

As our own planning estimate, not a standard, two place settings with a shared dish in the middle want about 400 to 600 square inches of surface, or a table of roughly 24 by 24 inches at the very least and 30 by 30 inches to be comfortable. A table smaller than that works for coffee and a laptop but not for plates, glasses and a serving dish at once.

The three listings we read are 24 inches round, 27.6 inches square and 35.5 inches square.

Surface per person, worked out

Divide the table area by two. The area of a square is the side squared, and the area of a circle is 3.14 times the radius squared.

• 24 inch round: radius 12 inches, area 3.14 × 144 ≈ 452 square inches, or about 226 per person.
• 27.6 inch square: 27.6 × 27.6 ≈ 762 square inches, or about 381 per person.
• 35.5 inch square: 35.5 × 35.5 ≈ 1,260 square inches, or about 630 per person.

So the 35.5 inch square gives each person almost three times the surface of the 24 inch round.

Floor space

The table and chairs need floor when chairs are pulled out. A rough planning zone of ours is about 24 inches behind each seated side. The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance uses 36 inches as a minimum clear width for a route and 32 inches at short points such as doorways. That rule is for public buildings, but it is a useful yardstick for the path around a table in a small room.

A smaller table gives a bigger route. A table against a wall needs only one pull-out zone on the open side.

Chairs: tuck under or not

Two chairs that slide fully under the table free the floor. The GOFLAME listing says its two chairs can be tucked under the table when stored. The Bloomliving listing describes a compact set with a heavy-duty steel frame. The HOOBRO table has no chairs.

Check that the chair seat fits under the apron and that the backs do not stop against the table edge.

Seating for two, or four

A table for two can sometimes seat four at a squeeze. The HOOBRO listing gives a seating capacity of 4 for its 27.6 inch square table, although the product is titled for 2. At 24 inches per person along the edge, a 27.6 inch side holds one person, so four would be tight.

Materials

The GOFLAME set uses an MDF and acacia veneer table top on rubber wood legs, with chairs upholstered in PVC leather over sponge and an X-shaped back. The Bloomliving set uses a steel frame with a wood-grain coating, a stain-resistant surface and memory foam chair cushions with a fabric cover. The HOOBRO table is bamboo with a 0.75 inch thick top.

Veneered MDF and coated metal wipe clean. Bamboo is light, at 23.3 pounds, but a thin top can dent. The listings do not give wear figures.

Weight limits

The HOOBRO listing gives 200 pounds for the table. The GOFLAME and Bloomliving listings give no weight limit in the text we read. The figure is the seller’s and we have not verified it. If you plan to use the table as a desk, a limit matters.

Assembly and delivery

The Bloomliving listing says legs attach to the table and chairs with hardware provided and no other tools, in about 15 minutes. The GOFLAME listing requires assembly and warns about sharp edges. The HOOBRO listing includes tools and instructions.

The three listings we read

Good for: a couple who want a roomy table and a set that stores compactly. Keep in mind: a 35.5 inch square is big for a tiny kitchen and the listing gives no weight limit. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.

The listing gives 27.6 by 27.6 by 29.5 inches, a listed weight of 23.3 pounds, a bamboo top 0.75 inch thick, a 200 pound maximum recommendation and a seating capacity of 4. Good for: someone who will choose chairs separately and wants a light, small table. Keep in mind: it is a table only, and a seating capacity of 4 is optimistic for a table this size. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. A kitchen corner is 96 inches (8 feet) across with the table in the middle and a chair on each of two opposite sides.

Floor needed is the table side plus two pull-out zones of 24 inches (our estimate).

• GOFLAME 35.5 inch: 35.5 + 48 = 83.5 inches, leaving 96 − 83.5 = 12.5 inches, well under the 36 inch yardstick.
• HOOBRO 27.6 inch: 27.6 + 48 = 75.6 inches, leaving 96 − 75.6 = 20.4 inches.
• Bloomliving 24 inch: 24 + 48 = 72 inches, leaving 96 − 72 = 24 inches.

None meets 36 inches with chairs pulled out on both sides in a room this narrow, but the chairs tuck under when not in use, and putting the table against a wall removes one zone. With the GOFLAME against a wall, 35.5 + 24 = 59.5 inches, leaving 96 − 59.5 = 36.5 inches, which meets the yardstick.

Surface per person, from the arithmetic above: about 226, 381 and 630 square inches for the 24 inch round, the 27.6 inch square and the 35.5 inch square. If you want to eat dinner with a shared dish, the smallest table is tight.

Red flags in listings

A seating capacity of 4 on a 27.6 inch table, a size line that is the package and a weight limit that is missing are signs to ask. Also check whether a listing is a table only or a set with chairs, because titles such as “table for 2” can leave the chairs out.
