Blanket, cover or liner

The four listings are three types.

• Waterproof blanket. A flat piece you lay over the seat, with a waterproof layer and a non-slip back. The Fixwal and gogobunny are blankets.
• Reversible quilted cover. A fitted sheet with straps and foam rods that tuck into the sofa creases. The U-NICE is one.
• Sectional sofa pieces. Two flat pieces for a sectional, as the NAISI set.

A blanket is quick to remove and wash and can double as a pet mat. A fitted cover stays put better and looks neater, and it is less likely to be waterproof.

Waterproof, water repellent or neither

This is the check that matters for a dog with accidents. The Fixwal lists a 5-layer structure with an added TPU waterproof barrier and says it blocks urine, saliva and liquid spills. The gogobunny lists a 3-layer TPU barrier. The NAISI lists a TPU waterproof layer in the middle. The U-NICE lists a water repellent level in its first column, and the same row marks other models as not water resistant, so the cover is repellent at best and not a barrier for accidents.

TPU is a plastic membrane, and a waterproof label from a seller is a claim we have not tested. A seam can still leak at the edges, and a waterproof layer does not stop liquid running off the blanket onto the sofa. Treat waterproof as protection for a spill and not for repeated soaking.

Worked example: length against the seat width

Measure the seat across the cushions, from the inside of one arm to the inside of the other. Pottery Barn’s measuring guide, which we opened, says to measure from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other for slipcovers and lists overall widths of 68 to 86 inches for a small sofa and 78 to 96 inches for a large one. Say your sofa has a seat width of 70 inches, which is the seat interior width we read for the Vesgantti sofa in another guide, and a seat depth of 21.7 inches. These figures are an example, not a standard.

The arithmetic is 70 − 59 = 11 and 70 − 68 = 2. A blanket exactly as long as the seat leaves no tuck-in, so a few inches of spare length helps it stay put. The gogobunny page lists sizes from 30 by 30 up to 82 by 120 inches, so a larger size is an option. The Fixwal’s page says slight deviations of up to 1 inch may occur. All the blanket depths of 27.6, 30 and 35 inches exceed a 21.7 inch seat depth, so the depth is fine if you only want to cover the seat. To cover the back, you need a larger piece.

Slip, hair and wash

The Fixwal says its granular rubber backing keeps it in place on leather or fabric sofas. The NAISI lists a dense silicone particle layer on the back. The U-NICE lists elastic straps, longer arm flaps and two foam rods to tuck into the creases. The gogobunny says it is a lightweight blanket that folds up and can be used in a car or on a floor.

Washing: the Fixwal says machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, no bleach and tumble dry low. The gogobunny says a 30 minute wash and suggests dryer balls. The NAISI says hand or machine wash in cold water, no bleach and hang to dry. The U-NICE says wash at or below 30 degrees Celsius. Waterproof layers can be damaged by heat, so follow the line for your product, and note that the NAISI says to hang it to dry.

Dog considerations

Nails can cut a thin blanket. None of the listings gives a tear rating in the rows we read. Fur sticks to flannel and plush and brushes off a smooth quilted surface more easily, which is a general observation and not a claim from a listing. Also, a dog that scratches the sofa may need a trimmed nail and a place to lie, which is outside the product.
