Quick answer
A California king mattress is 72 by 84 inches, and Amerisleep lists a 12 by 12 foot minimum room for it, with at least 24 inches of clearance on each side and at the foot. In that room a frame of about 72 by 84 inches leaves 24 inches spare in width and 36 inches in length after the clearance. Choose a California king frame, not a king frame: a 76 inch wide king frame is 4 inches too wide, and a 80 inch long one is 4 inches too short.
California king and king: the two numbers that differ
| Size | Width | Length | Minimum room (Amerisleep) |
|---|---|---|---|
| California king | 72 in | 84 in | 12 by 12 ft |
| King | 76 in | 80 in | 12 by 12 ft |
| Queen | 60 in | 80 in | 10 by 10 ft |
A California king is 4 inches narrower than a king (76 minus 72) and 4 inches longer (84 minus 80). It has almost the same floor area as a king, 6,048 square inches (72 times 84) against 6,080 (76 times 80), which is why Amerisleep lists the same minimum room for both. What changes is the shape: you need more depth and less width, which suits a long narrow bedroom.
Worked example: a 12 by 12 foot room
Say the room is exactly 12 by 12 feet, which is 144 by 144 inches, the minimum Amerisleep gives, and the bed is centered with its head against a wall. Amerisleep advises at least 24 inches of clearance on each side and at the foot. After allowing 48 inches for the two sides and 24 inches for the foot, here is what each frame leaves:
| Frame | Width | Length | Spare width | Spare length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mattress only | 72 in | 84 in | 24 in (144 minus 72 minus 48) | 36 in (144 minus 84 minus 24) |
| Metal 16 inch | 71.6 in | 83.6 in | 24.4 in | 36.4 in |
| Low-profile floor frame | 73.23 in | 85.04 in | 22.77 in | 34.96 in |
| Metal frame with headboard | 72.24 in | 86.9 in | 23.76 in | 33.1 in |
All three fit with 22 inches or more spare in width and 33 inches or more in length. A frame with a headboard adds to the length, which is the number to watch if a dresser stands at the foot: the 86.9 inch frame leaves 33.1 inches before the dresser, so a 15.7 inch deep dresser (see our dresser guide) on the foot wall leaves 144 minus 86.9 minus 15.7, which is 41.4 inches between the bed and the dresser, still above the 24 inch guide. In a room smaller than 12 by 12 feet you will not have the clearance on all sides.
Reading a California king frame listing
A California king is sold in fewer frame styles than a queen or a full, so the listings you find are often shared by several sellers with slightly different titles. Compare the table, not the title.
Check that the frame matches the mattress. A metal frame is usually sized to the mattress. The first listing below states a frame of 83.6 by 71.6 inches for a “84×72 inch” mattress, which is 0.4 inch under the mattress on each dimension, so confirm with the seller that the mattress sits within the frame.
Check the height. The three frames are 7.68, 16 and 35.23 inches tall (the last includes a headboard). Height decides storage and how you get in: the 7.68 inch frame sits almost on the floor and has no under-bed space.
Check the weight figures. One listing gives 1,500 pounds in its table and 3,500 pounds in its bullets. Two numbers for the same item is a prompt to ask, not to pick the higher one.
Check the support. The metal frame lists nine legs and steel slats in its bullets. The other two listings do not mention a center support in the text we read, so ask whether the slats are supported in the middle.

We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The second and third listings show “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so their cart buttons are hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened them.
16 inch California king metal platform bed frame. The table gives 83.6 inches long, 71.6 wide, 16 high and 46.2 pounds, a compatible mattress size of California king (84 by 72 inches) and a maximum weight recommendation of 1,500 pounds. The bullets give steel slats, nine legs, a stated capacity of 3,500 pounds and headboard and footboard compatibility, with the headboard and footboard not included. Best for: a room that wants a plain frame with storage space underneath. Watch out: the 1,500 versus 3,500 pound conflict.
Low-profile California king floor platform bed frame, solid wood slats. The table gives 85.04 inches long, 73.23 wide, 7.68 high and 66.6 pounds. The bullets give a floor-standing design, no headboard, reinforced cross beams and wood slats. A second listing with a different ASIN and a similar title shows the same size and weight, and its table says the material is engineered wood, while the title of the one we picked says solid wood slats, so ask what the slats are made of. Best for: a low, minimal bed in a long room. Watch out: there is no storage and no headboard.
California king metal bed frame with headboard, black. The table gives 86.9 inches long, 72.24 wide, 35.23 high, 51.7 pounds and an MDF and metal build. The bullets are generic and refer to “the source listing” and to reviewing images, which suggests auto-generated text, so use the table. Best for: a buyer who wants the headboard in the same box. Watch out: the vague bullets and the 86.9 inch length.
How the three compare
| Listing | Length | Width | Height | Weight | Headboard |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metal 16 inch | 83.6 in | 71.6 in | 16 in | 46.2 lb | Not included |
| Floor frame | 85.04 in | 73.23 in | 7.68 in | 66.6 lb | None |
| Metal with headboard | 86.9 in | 72.24 in | 35.23 in | 51.7 lb | Included |
Mistakes to avoid
Buying a king frame for a California king mattress. The king is 4 inches wider and 4 inches shorter.
Planning a 10 by 10 foot room. Amerisleep lists 12 by 12 feet as the minimum for a California king.
Forgetting the doorway. A California king frame ships in long boxes; measure the stairs and the turn.
Trusting one weight figure. The metal frame states two.
Ignoring the center support. An 84 inch mattress needs support in the middle.
When you may not need a California king
If the room is smaller than 12 by 12 feet, a queen needs only 10 by 10 feet and leaves more floor; see the queen bed frame with headboard guide. If you want storage under the bed, a lift-up or drawer frame may suit better; see the guide to a king size bed frame and the bed frame with storage guide.
