Most of the time, the best chair for a standing desk is your normal office chair, with the desk lowered to sitting height. A tall drafting chair with a foot ring is only for perching while the desk is raised, and it needs a seat that reaches a very high setting, which the listings rarely state. This guide shows how high a seat would have to go, when a drafting chair makes sense, and what three drafting-chair listings say and do not say.
We have not tested these chairs. Details come from the Amazon listings, checked on September 29, 2026. Two of the three list a seat height that is clearly the overall height of the chair, so we do not use it.
Quick answer
- Sit at sitting height with a normal chair. Lower the desk, sit in your usual chair and raise the desk when you want to stand. This is what most people do, and it needs no special chair.
- Perch with a drafting chair or stool. If you want to sit with the desk raised, you need a seat that goes much higher, plus a foot ring or footrest, because your feet will not reach the floor.
- Use a saddle stool for a mid-height perch. See our saddle vs kneeling vs office chair guide.
- Do not use a tall chair as your only chair. OSHA says sitting still for long periods is not healthy, so alternate positions (OSHA good working positions).
How high would the seat have to go?
When you sit at a desk, your elbows should be about level with the desk surface. Our planning estimate puts your elbows about 14 percent of your height above the seat, so the seat height you need is roughly your desk height minus that. Enter your height and the height you would raise the desk to.
Perch height calculator
Your height and the desk height you would use while perching, in inches.
Planning estimates from average body proportions (14 percent of your height for elbow height above the seat and 25 percent for knee height). Not a standard.
Example: someone 5 ft 8 in (68 in) with the desk at 38 inches needs a seat at about 28.5 inches. Their knee height is about 17 inches, so their feet would hang 11.5 inches above the floor, which is why these chairs have a foot ring.
Which type of chair for which desk height
| Desk at | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sitting height | Your normal office chair | The desk matches the chair, and you can use adjustments and armrests |
| Mid height, a little above sitting | A high office chair or a saddle stool with a footrest | A small step up in seat height, feet still near the floor |
| Standing height | A drafting chair with a foot ring, or a perching stool | The seat must be very high, and your feet need a foot ring |
| Any, mostly standing | An anti-fatigue mat and a stool for short rests | Keeps you standing most of the day and gives your legs a break |
Three drafting chairs, and what the listings say
Drafting chairs have a tall base and a foot ring. The three below are typical. What matters most, the seat height range, is not clearly stated in any of them: two list a seat height that is really the overall height (48 inches and 47 centimeters), and the third gives no seat height at all.
Kensaker Drafting Chair with Adjustable Foot Ring and Flip-Up Armrests, 300 lb
The listing describes a 5-claw base with a thickened seat plate, 7.9 inches of height adjustment, a foot ring with a locking knob that is said not to slide, a mesh-top seat cushion with high-density foam and flip-up armrests. It gives a stated capacity of 300 lb and a seat depth of 19 inches.
- Good for: a desk raised to standing height where you want a foot ring and arms that flip up.
- Keep in mind: the listing gives the adjustment travel (7.9 inches) but not the lowest seat height, and its table lists a seat height of 48 inches, which is the overall height. Ask the seller or check the Q&A before you rely on it.
ORRSAKER Drafting Chair, Tall Office Chair with Flip-Up Arms and Foot Ring, 300 lb
The listing describes an X-shaped backrest with a lumbar support that adjusts about 2 inches, 7.9 inches of height adjustment, a reinforced foot ring with an anti-slip lock, 90-degree flip-up arms, a 5-claw base and a stated capacity of 300 lb. The seat depth is 19 inches.
- Good for: someone who wants an adjustable lumbar on a tall chair.
- Keep in mind: like the other two, it does not state the minimum or maximum seat height in the text we read.
Primy Drafting Chair with Flip-Up Armrests, Lumbar Support and Adjustable Footrest Ring
The listing describes a curved backrest with adjustable lumbar support, a breathable mesh back, a 3-inch thick seat cushion with high-density sponge, a foot ring that adjusts in height and armrests that flip up 90 degrees. Overall size is listed as 25.2 by 25.2 by 48 inches with a seat depth of 18.9 inches.
- Good for: a wider base and a thicker seat cushion for longer perching.
- Keep in mind: the listing gives a seat height of 47 centimeters, which is not the seat height of a drafting chair, and the text we read does not state a weight capacity.
How to choose
- Work out the seat height you need with the tool above, then look for a listing that states the minimum and maximum seat height. If it does not, ask before buying.
- Check the foot ring. Your feet need a stable place to rest. A ring that slides or is too high or low gives no support.
- Check the base and weight limit. A tall chair tips more easily. OSHA recommends a strong five-legged base, and the three listings mention a 5-claw base (OSHA chair guidance).
- Check the floor. Casters that roll on hardwood may move when you climb on. Use a chair with lockable or floor-suited casters.
- Try a cheaper fix first. Lower the desk and use a regular chair, or add a footrest. See our footrest guide.
- If you are choosing a desk, see our standing desk guide and standing vs fixed desk comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best chair for a standing desk?
Usually your regular office chair, with the desk lowered when you sit. A tall drafting chair or stool is for perching while the desk stays raised.
Do I need a special chair for a standing desk?
Not necessarily. A regular chair works when the desk is at sitting height. A drafting chair only helps if you want to sit with the desk raised.
How high should a chair be for a standing desk?
Enough to put your elbows at the desk. Our planning estimate is your desk height minus about 14 percent of your height. At standing height that is a very high seat.
Are drafting chairs safe?
They are taller and can tip more easily than office chairs. Check the base, the weight capacity and the foot ring, and use them on a suitable floor.
Is a saddle stool good for a standing desk?
It can be for a mid-height perch. It has no backrest, so it suits shorter sessions.
