The open size decides whether a bed couch combo fits your room, not the closed sofa footprint. The three listings we read open to a full-size 59 in by 71 in bed, a queen of 89 in by 60 in, and a loveseat that fits two adults. Measure the room with the bed open, and leave at least 24 in beside it to get in and out. A bed couch combo is a sofa that opens into a bed, so one piece of furniture does both jobs in a small home.

What counts as a bed couch combo

Two kinds are common. A traditional sofa bed has a metal frame with a thin pull-out mattress, usually about 4 in to 5 in thick, and needs deep floor space to open. A boneless or floor-style bed couch has no frame and uses thick foam that folds out flat. The listings we read are all of the second type: they ship compressed, need no assembly and weigh less than a frame sofa.

The trade-off is height. A foam bed couch sits low, with seat heights of about 11.8 in to 16 in in the listings we read, while a frame sofa is closer to 17 in to 19 in. A low seat feels relaxed, but it is harder to stand up from.

Sleep sizes you will see

Sizes follow standard US mattress sizes. The Amerisleep size chart lists twin at 38 in by 75 in, full at 54 in by 75 in and queen at 60 in by 80 in. Foam bed couches are not always exact, so read the listing carefully.

  • Full-size floor bed. One listing says it unfolds to 59 in wide by 71 in long and warns it is a full, not a queen. That is a few inches wider and shorter than the chart’s 54 in by 75 in, which shows why you should use the listing number.
  • Queen. One listing gives a queen size as 89 in long by 60 in wide when open.
  • Loveseat. One listing is a 53 in wide loveseat that opens into a bed for two adults.

A person taller than about 6 ft will find a 71 in bed short. A 71 in length leaves no room at all for someone who is 71 in tall, while the 89 in queen gives about 18 in of margin to someone 6 ft tall (72 in).

Closed size versus open size

The footprint you live with is the closed one. The one you must find room for is the open one. Always check both, and check how the bed opens: some fold forward from the back, some unfold from the seat, and some need space behind the sofa.

For the models we read, the closed sizes are a 59.1 in wide by 35.4 in deep sofa with a 11.8 in height, a 60 in wide by 27.6 in deep sofa 23.6 in high, and a 53 in wide by 35 in deep loveseat 29 in high.

Worked example: opening a queen bed couch in a studio

The room is 10 ft by 12 ft (120 in by 144 in). The queen bed couch is 60 in wide closed and 27.6 in deep, and it opens to 60 in by 89 in.

  • Closed footprint. 60 x 27.6 = 1,656 sq in = 11.5 sq ft.
  • Open footprint. 60 x 89 = 5,340 sq in = 37.1 sq ft.
  • Room area. 120 x 144 = 17,280 sq in = 120 sq ft.
  • Share of room, closed and open. Closed 1,656 / 17,280 = 9.6 percent. Open 5,340 / 17,280 = 30.9 percent.
  • Space beside the open bed. Place the bed’s 89 in length along the 144 in wall. That leaves 144 – 89 = 55 in on the long wall. In the other direction, 120 – 60 = 60 in beside the bed.
  • Walkway check. 60 in beside the bed is above the 36 in minimum continuous clear width the US Access Board uses for an accessible route, which we use only as a yardstick. A coffee table or other furniture in that space would take it below the yardstick, so move it before you open the bed.

So the bed takes about 31 percent of the floor at night, but only 10 percent by day. In a 9 ft by 10 ft room (12,960 sq in), the same open bed would use 5,340 / 12,960 = 41.2 percent, which leaves very little room, so a full size or a loveseat is the better choice.

Comparing the three listings

A 59 in full-size floor couch

The COMAX listing is a low-profile 59.1 in wide, 35.4 in deep, 11.8 in high model. It says it unfolds to 59 in by 71 in and is full size, not queen. It states a 220 lb limit and a removable corduroy cover that is machine washable. Allow 24 to 72 hours for the foam to expand. It suits a kid’s room or a dorm.

A queen with removable armrests

The NLDD listing is a 5-in-1 model that opens to a queen of 89 in by 60 in. It states a 15 in seat height and a 60 in minimum door width. The armrests are removable and form a flat bed. It suits a guest room or a studio where the bed has to be a proper size.

A 53 in loveseat for two

The cidludto listing is a loveseat 53 in wide, 35 in deep and 29 in high. It converts to a chaise and a floor futon for two adults, with 4 pillows, and states a 300 lb limit and a 56 in minimum door width. It suits a small living room where the sofa position matters more than the bed.

Comfort for guests

Foam bed couches vary in firmness. A thin mattress on a hard floor can be uncomfortable, so a rug or a pad underneath helps. Place the bed away from drafts and radiators. Offer a pillow and a blanket, since the couch’s own pillows are usually small.

If a guest stays more than a few nights, consider a real mattress, which will support the back better.

Setting it up as a daily routine

A bed couch combo only saves space if opening and closing it is easy, so make the routine simple. Keep bedding in a nearby basket or a box under a table rather than across the room, and store the pillows within reach. If you open the bed every night, pick a model with handles or armrests that come off easily, and clear the floor around it before you start.

Plan the room around the open position. Put the coffee table on casters or choose a small stool that can be moved with one hand. Keep the path to the door clear when the bed is open, and make sure the open bed does not block a closet door or a radiator.

A rug underneath helps in two ways. It protects the foam base from a cold or damp floor, and it stops the couch sliding as you open it. Choose a rug at least as large as the open footprint so the bed sits on it fully.

Who should buy a bed couch combo

  • Studio and one-bedroom residents who have occasional guests.
  • Teen rooms and dorms that need a sofa by day.
  • Anyone who moves often, since the foam types are light.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who needs a nightly bed. A proper mattress gives better support.
  • Taller sleepers, if the open length is under about 75 in.
  • Rooms that cannot spare the open footprint.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Checking the closed size only. Measure the open size too.
  • Mixing up full and queen. One listing says its bed is a full, not a queen.
  • Skipping the door check. The listings give minimum door widths of 56 in and 60 in.
  • Using it straight from the box. The foam needs 24 to 72 hours to expand.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a bed couch combo when it is open?

It depends on the model. The listings we read open to 59 in by 71 in, to 60 in by 89 in, and to a futon for two adults.

Is a bed couch combo comfortable to sleep on?

For a short stay, usually. For nightly use, a standard mattress is better.

Plan for the open footprint plus about 24 in on the side where you get in. In our example the open queen takes about 5,340 sq in.

Can two adults sleep on a bed couch combo?

A full or queen size can, with the stated limits. Check the weight limit in the listing: the ones we read state 220 lb and 300 lb.

How long should I wait before using a new foam bed couch?

The listings say 24 to 72 hours for the foam to expand after unboxing.
