Quick answer
“Back support” on an armchair is a description, not a test result. Nothing on the listings we read shows a measured level of support, so the useful approach is to check the parts you can measure: how far the backrest rises above the seat, how high the seat is (so you can get up), whether the lumbar area is shaped or needs a pillow, how firm the fill is and what weight the chair is rated for. Then sit in it if you can.
This article is general information, not medical advice. If you have back pain that is sharp, constant or spreading, speak with a clinician.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: an armchair with pocket coils and a stated seat height of 18.1 inches, a lazy chair with a lumbar pillow, a side pocket and a folding ottoman and a tufted armchair with shredded foam. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat in any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

What the word means on a listing
Sellers use “back support” for a high back, a curved back, a removable lumbar pillow or simply a padded back. The listings we read use words such as “spine proper support,” “ergonomic comfort” and “lumbar pillow.” None gives a pressure test or a support rating.
The federal workplace safety agency OSHA, in guidance about computer workstation chairs, describes a backrest that conforms to the natural curve of the spine and provides adequate lumbar support. That guidance is for office chairs, not living room armchairs, but it gives a useful picture: the support should meet your lower back where it curves.
Measure the backrest rise
The backrest rise is how far the back extends above the seat. Listings rarely give it directly, but you can estimate it: overall height minus seat height. The VINGLI listing gives an overall height of 33 inches and a seat height of 18.1 inches, so the back rises about 33 − 18.1 = 14.9 inches above the seat. That covers the lower and middle back but stops well below the shoulders.
The MAXYOYO listing gives a seat back interior height of 19.6 inches. The Furlide listing gives an overall height of 37.4 inches but no seat height, so we cannot work out its rise.
Seat height: sitting and standing
A chair that supports your back but is hard to get out of is not helpful. The VINGLI seat is 18.1 inches from the floor. As our own rough rule, a seat near the height of the back of your knee is easiest to rise from, and 18.1 inches is close for many adults.
The Furlide and MAXYOYO listings give no seat height in the fields we read. Lazy chairs and tufted chairs may sit lower, so ask.
Lumbar pillows
The Furlide listing includes a lumbar pillow that supports the lower back while you read or relax. A loose pillow lets you place the support, but it can slide. A pillow is useful only if it fits the gap between your lower back and the chair.
If your back curves strongly, a thicker pillow helps. The listing gives no pillow thickness, so the fit is unknown.
Fill, firmness and sinking
Firmness affects support more than shape. The VINGLI listing describes individually wrapped pocket coils and high-density foam, which the seller says keep the seat from sagging. The MAXYOYO listing describes high-density shredded foam in the seat and backrest, and the Furlide listing describes soft PP cotton that stays fluffy.
Soft fill feels comfortable at first but can let you sink and slouch. Coils and firm foam tend to keep the shape. The listings do not give foam density or a durability figure.
Arms and getting up
Arms help you push up. The VINGLI listing gives an arm height of 23.2 inches and describes wide track arms. The MAXYOYO listing describes wooden armrests and a metal frame. The Furlide listing describes a steel frame and a support tube.
Wide flat arms hold a book or a cup, and thin arms save room.
Weight ratings
The listings give 380 pounds for the VINGLI, 400 pounds for the Furlide and 300 pounds for the MAXYOYO. These are the sellers’ figures, and we have not verified them.
Delivery and set-up
The VINGLI listing describes vacuum-packed cushions that fluff back up in 48 to 72 hours and a 15-minute assembly. The Furlide listing says assembly takes under 5 minutes with no tools. The MAXYOYO listing gives 15 to 30 minutes.
Give a vacuum-packed cushion time to expand before you judge the support.
The three listings we read
VINGLI Accent Chair, chenille upholstered armchair, light grey (model CCHAIR). The listing gives 30.7 by 29.9 by 33 inches (D by W by H), a seat 22.8 inches wide and 20 inches deep at 18.1 inches high, an arm height of 23.2 inches, a listed weight of 39.7 pounds, a 380 pound maximum recommendation, pocket coils with high-density foam and a 15-minute assembly. Good for: a reader who wants a coil-supported seat and a stated seat height. Keep in mind: a back rise of about 14.9 inches is low for a tall person, and the listing does not describe lumbar shape. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
Furlide Lazy Chair with Ottoman, comfy fabric accent lounge armchair with lumbar pillow and folding footrest. The listing gives 28.5 by 25.5 by 37.4 inches, a listed weight of 24 pounds, a 400 pound maximum recommendation, a curved backrest, a lumbar pillow, a folding footrest, a side pocket and PP cotton fill, with assembly in under 5 minutes. Good for: someone who wants to put their feet up with a pillow for the lower back. Keep in mind: no seat height is given, and cotton fill may flatten with use. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
MAXYOYO Modern Accent Chair, tufted with metal frame (A88-Series). The listing gives 34.6 by 29.5 by 29.5 inches, a seat back interior height of 19.6 inches, a backrest width of 25.6 inches, a listed weight of 19.14 pounds, a 300 pound maximum recommendation and shredded foam in the seat and back. Good for: a compact armchair with a stated back height. Keep in mind: the overall height of 29.5 inches and depth of 34.6 inches suggest a low, reclined shape, and no seat height is given. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A person measures 24 inches from the seat to the top of the shoulders when sitting upright and 19 inches from the floor to the back of the knee.
Backrest rise. The VINGLI’s back rises about 14.9 inches above the seat, which is 24 − 14.9 = 9.1 inches below the shoulders. So it supports the lower and middle back but not the upper back. The MAXYOYO’s interior back height of 19.6 inches is 24 − 19.6 = 4.4 inches below the shoulders. The Furlide’s rise cannot be worked out.
Seat height. The VINGLI seat at 18.1 inches is 19 − 18.1 = 0.9 inch below the back of the knee, close enough to stand up without much push.
Weight. A 260 pound person is under the VINGLI’s 380 by 120 pounds, the Furlide’s 400 by 140 pounds and the MAXYOYO’s 300 by 40 pounds.
The example shows the limits of the listings: only one of the three gives both a seat height and an overall height, and none describes lumbar shape.
Red flags in listings
A “seat back interior height” that equals the seat height, which the VINGLI listing shows (18.11 inches for both), is a field that was not filled with a real measurement. A chair described as “ergonomic” with no backrest height, no seat height and no fill description gives you nothing to judge. Medical promises such as “relieves back pain” are a sign to be careful.
Who should skip buying for back support
If your back pain is new or severe, see a clinician first. If you sit in the chair for hours, a chair with adjustable lumbar support is easier to tune; see best office chair for lower back pain. If getting up is hard, a lift chair is a different product.
Frequently asked questions
What makes an armchair supportive for the back?
A backrest that rises high enough, a shape or pillow that meets your lower back and firm fill. There is no standard test for armchairs.
Is a lumbar pillow enough?
It lets you place the support, but it can slide and may not fit your curve. Try it before relying on it.
How high should the back of an armchair be?
High enough to reach the part of your back you want supported. Compare the listing’s backrest rise with your seated height.
Does a back support armchair help back pain?
A chair is not a treatment. If pain is persistent, speak with a clinician.
What seat height is best?
One near the height of the back of your knee is easiest to stand from, as our rough rule. Ask if the listing omits it.
Bottom line
Choose a back support armchair by backrest rise, seat height, fill firmness and weight rating, and treat “back support” as a description. Of the three listings above, the VINGLI gives the most numbers, the Furlide includes a lumbar pillow and a footrest with no seat height and the MAXYOYO gives a back height but no seat height. Ask the seller for any number the page leaves out.
