So in the rooms Amerisleep suggests, both take about the same share. The saving comes from storage. The itumati frame is 18 inches tall; with no clearance stated we use the full height as an upper bound: 18 times 53.5 times 74.5 divided by 1,728 is 41.5 cubic feet. The real figure is lower because the frame’s own rails and legs take space, and the NEW JETO and RUNSUNSPRI listings give no figure to compare.
The fold-flat base, if you slide it under another bed, uses 0.8 inch of the clearance, our arithmetic from the listing’s thickness. Its folded size is not stated.

They also warn that if used as a bed board on a frame, the frame must have support beams, because it cannot replace them. Best for: a guest bed you can put away or a floor mattress base. Watch out: it is a base, not a full bed with legs, and a twin at 74 by 37 inches is an inch narrower than a 38 inch mattress.

How to choose
Pick the kind of saving. If you need the floor back in daytime, a fold-flat base; if you need storage, a tall frame.
Pick the size. A twin in a small room; a full only if the room is close to 9.5 by 10.5 feet.
Ask for clearance. None of the three listings gives a number for the space under the frame.
Check the height. A tall frame is hard for a child; a twin on 14 inches puts a 10 inch mattress at 24 inches.
Which room which bed
The three kinds of saving suit different rooms. In a studio flat where the bed is also a sofa, fold-away matters more than storage. In a child’s room with toys and bedding, storage under the bed matters. In a guest room that is used a few nights a month, a base that stores away between visits is the most efficient.
As a rule of thumb that is ours and not a standard, if the room is under about 100 square feet and the bed takes more than a quarter of it, as in our example (27.7 percent), the next thing to cut is what stands beside the bed. A twin frame with a 12 to 18 inch clearance under it can hold the contents of a small dresser, which is the real space saving, but only if the clearance is as tall as the listing implies. Ask for the number before you order, since none of the three states one.
Mistakes to avoid
Buying a base as a bed. The tatami base needs a floor or a frame with beams.
Counting frame height as storage. The clearance is lower than the height.
Choosing a full when a twin fits. In a small room the extra 8.6 square feet of mattress matters.
Forgetting the door. A tall bed against a door that swings in may block it.
The trade-offs are real. A fold-flat base is the lowest bed and the least comfortable to get up from; with a 10 inch mattress (our example) the top is 10.8 inches from the floor, against 24 inches on the 14 inch twin frame and 28 on the 18 inch full.
