How to measure a wingback chair

Wingback chairs vary in the height of the back, the width of the wings and the depth of the seat. Take three measurements and write them down:

1. Height: from the floor to the top of the back.
2. Width: across the widest point, usually the outside of the wings or arms.
3. Length: front to back at the deepest point. Listings call this “long”.

As our own planning tip, not a published rule, measure at the widest and tallest points and measure twice. If a measurement falls between two sizes, a stretch cover has more give in width than in height, which is a general property of knit fabric and not a figure from these listings.

The size ranges

The KRFOONN listing says the cover fits chairs 27.2 to 31.5 inches long, 35.4 to 43.3 inches high and 31.5 to 36.2 inches wide. The Granbest listing gives 27.5 to 31.5 inches long, 37.4 to 43.3 inches high and 31.5 to 36.2 inches wide. The Turquoize listing gives 30 to 33 inches long, 43 to 45 inches high and 31.5 to 36.5 inches wide.

Notice the pattern. The widths are close to the same for all three, 31.5 to about 36 inches. The heights differ: the first two top out at 43.3 inches and the Turquoize starts at 43 inches, so it is for taller chairs.

A worked example with invented numbers. Your wingback measures 29 inches long, 44 inches high and 34 inches wide. The KRFOONN needs a height of 43.3 inches or less, so 44 − 43.3 = 0.7 inches too tall. The Granbest is the same, 0.7 inches too tall. The Turquoize’s height range of 43 to 45 inches includes 44, but its length range of 30 to 33 inches starts at 30, so your 29 inch length is 1 inch short. Width of 34 inches is inside all three. No cover matches all three measurements in this example, which is why you measure first.

If you are just outside a range, a stretch cover may still go on, but it will be tight and may pull at the seams or ride up. The listings do not say how much beyond the range they stretch.

Fabric and stretch

The KRFOONN cover is 92 percent polyester and 8 percent spandex. The Granbest is 95 percent polyester and 5 percent spandex with a water repellent finish and a jacquard knit. The Turquoize is 85 percent polyester and 15 percent spandex with a jacquard pattern.

More spandex generally means more stretch. The Turquoize has the highest share of spandex at 15 percent, the Granbest the lowest at 5 percent. That is a general property of fabric blends, and the listings do not give a stretch percentage. A fabric with less stretch gives a smoother look on a chair inside its range and fits less forgivingly outside it.

2-piece and how it stays on

All three covers are two pieces: a chair cover and a separate seat cushion cover. The Granbest listing says the separate design is non-slip, and tells you to remove the seat cushion first, find the washing label and place it in the middle of the bottom of the chair’s back, then cover the whole chair and the seat cushion. The Turquoize listing says it has an elastic band sewn on the bottom to hold the cover against the furniture and that it works for both T cushion and box cushion styles. It tells you to find a red tag marked “BACK” and place it in the middle of the chair back.

Slipcovers on wingbacks tend to ride up at the wings and slide forward off the seat. The elastic band on the Turquoize and the separate cushion cover on all three are there for that reason. Tuck any spare fabric deep into the crease between the seat and back.

Care and washing

The KRFOONN listing says machine washable in cold water on a gentle cycle, separately, with mild detergent and no bleach. The Granbest listing says machine washable, cold and gentle, with a low tumble dry. The Turquoize listing says machine washable in cold water, wash separately on a gentle cycle, with no bleach and no iron.

Cold, gentle washing is the common instruction for polyester and spandex. Hot water and high heat can damage the elastic. Follow the label on the one you buy.

Weight and shipping

The covers are light. The KRFOONN item weight is 1.25 pounds and the Granbest 1.65 pounds. The Turquoize weight was not captured. A light weight means they ship in a small box and arrive folded, so give them a day to relax before judging the fit, which is a general tip and not a claim from the listings.

Water repellent

Only the Granbest listing says water repellent. It is a finish on the fabric, not a waterproof layer, and the listing’s phrase is “accidental spills”. A cover can protect the chair from a splash, and a pet or a child will test it. We have not verified the finish.
