Folded size against open size

The expandable solid wood table is 23.6 by 31.5 inches closed and 47.2 by 31.5 inches open. The floor area is 23.6 × 31.5 = 743.4 square inches closed, about 5.2 square feet, and 47.2 × 31.5 = 1,486.8 square inches open, about 10.3 square feet. The area doubles.

The drop leaf table is 31.5 inches deep and 60.2 inches long when open, and the listing gives a collapsed size of 15 by 31.5 inches (a minimum length of 13 inches is also quoted). The floor area is 15 × 31.5 = 472.5 square inches folded, about 3.3 square feet, and 60.2 × 31.5 = 1,896.3 square inches open, about 13.2 square feet. That is about four times the area when open.

The round set has a fixed table of 31.5 inches in diameter and 29.5 inches high. The area is about 3.1416 × 15.75² ≈ 779 square inches, about 5.4 square feet. It does not fold or grow, which is why it is the least flexible and the simplest.

Seating and what fits

As our own planning estimate, not a standard, allow about 24 inches of table edge per adult. Closed, the expandable table is 23.6 inches long, so it seats about one person per long side, two in total. Open at 47.2 inches it seats about 47.2 ÷ 24 ≈ 2 per long side, so four with two on each side. The listing says “for 2-6”, which would need people at the ends.

The drop leaf table at 60.2 inches seats about 60.2 ÷ 24 ≈ 2.5 per long side, so about four to six. The round table at 31.5 inches across seats two comfortably, as its listing says, and the title says 2 to 4.

Are chairs included

This is the question the keyword hides. The expandable table listing says plainly in its first bullet that it includes only the table and the chairs in the pictures are not included. The drop leaf listing says the table and chairs are sold separately and to check the measurements of your folding chairs. Only the YATINEY listing is a 3 piece set with one table and two chairs.

So for a table and chairs in one box, the round set is the only one of the three. For the other two, you need to buy chairs and check that they fit under the apron. Our check is the table height (29.5 and 28.5 inches) minus a seat height of about 17 to 19 inches, which is our general expectation for a dining chair, giving a seat-to-tabletop gap of about 10 to 12 inches.

Storage and extras

The expandable table lists a concealed storage compartment beneath the top. The drop leaf table lists two drawers (each 11 by 7.1 by 2.8 inches), a bottom shelf and four wheels, two of them lockable, plus a rounded-corner design. A table on wheels is easy to move to a wall, and a table with a shelf has less knee room.

The round set has no storage and uses adjustable feet for uneven floors. If you are short of storage, the drop leaf table gives you the most, and if you want clean lines, the round set gives you the least clutter.

The drop leaf table says its 18 millimeter plywood supports up to 300 pounds in total. The expandable table lists a weight of 52 pounds but no load rating in the text we read. The round set lists 44.1 pounds and gives no rating.

Solid wood is heavier, can be refinished and resists wear, and a seller’s grade claim such as “FAS grade” is the seller’s. Plywood and particleboard are lighter and cheaper and do not like standing water or heat.

Moving and assembly

The expandable table weighs 52 pounds and the drop leaf 55 pounds. The round set weighs 44.1 pounds. All three need assembly. The expandable table and the round set say instructions and hardware are included. The drop leaf listing mentions a 3-year warranty.

Plan to check the stairs and the doors. A 55 pound table in one box is a two-person carry for many people, which is our estimate and not a listing figure.

Matching chairs

If you buy the table alone, the chairs have to match three things: width, seat height and style. Measure the table’s long side and divide by the chair width. For the 47.2 inch open table, two 20 inch chairs fit along a side with 7.2 inches to spare. For a folded drop leaf table of 15 inches, chairs go against the wall.

A chair that tucks under a drop leaf table needs the apron or drawers to clear the seat. The two drawers on the drop leaf table lower the clear height under the top, so check the knee height before buying chairs.
