Quick answer
A table sold for “6 to 8 people” often seats six comfortably and eight only if everyone squeezes. For eight adults you want a table about 70 inches long or more, chairs that are narrow enough to sit three along each long side and a room big enough to pull them out. Many listings that say “with chairs” sell only the table, so read what is included.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-10-01: a 63 inch dining table described for 6 to 8 people (ASIN B0FZ861RJM), a 55 to 70.8 inch extendable oval table described for 4 to 8 (B0H4GJSY74) and a set of 8 PU leather dining chairs from OLIXIS (B0DY6HWZDX). They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat at any of them, and we do not show prices; check the current price on Amazon. Every number comes from the listings.

How long a table seats eight
The seating count on a listing is a marketing claim, not a standard. As our own planning estimate, allow about 24 inches of table edge per adult. That gives eight seats a rough layout of three per long side and one at each end. The table then needs a long side of at least 3 × 24 = 72 inches and an end wide enough for one chair, about 24 inches.
On that rule, the 63 inch table fits 63 ÷ 24 ≈ 2.6 adults per long side, so two comfortably and three tightly, plus one at each end for six to eight in total. The 70.8 inch table fits 70.8 ÷ 24 ≈ 2.95 per side, which is close to three, with an end width of 31.5 inches for one more. That is why the extendable table is the closer match for eight.
The three listings
The 63 inch table is 63 inches wide (long side) by 29.5 inches deep and 29.9 inches high, weighs 42.2 pounds and has a walnut-look top on a metal frame with particleboard. Its listing says it “comfortably accommodates 6 to 8 people”, and also suggests using it as a home office desk.
The extendable oval is 55 inches long when closed and 70.8 inches when extended, 31.5 inches wide and 29.5 inches high. The listing says it is MDF with a built-in flip leaf and weighs 83 pounds, and it says it is for 4 to 8.
The OLIXIS listing is for a set of 8 chairs, not a table. It gives 20.47 inches deep, 22.83 inches wide and 32.87 inches high for the chair, a faux leather seat on rubber wood legs and a weight of 9.72 pounds, which may be per chair or for the set; the listing does not say.
Chair width and the layout
Chair width is what makes or breaks the layout. The OLIXIS chair is 22.83 inches wide, reading the listing’s item dimensions of 20.47 by 22.83 by 32.87 inches as depth, width and height (the listing gives the depth as 20.47 inches; the order of the other two is our reading). Three of them on a long side take 3 × 22.83 = 68.49 inches. On the 70.8 inch extended table that leaves 70.8 − 68.49 = 2.31 inches, about 0.8 inches between neighbors, which is no breathing room. A chair at each end needs 22.83 inches of the 31.5 inch end width, with 8.67 inches to spare.
So eight of these chairs can be placed at the extended oval table, but only by touching shoulders along the sides. On the 63 inch table, two chairs per side take 45.66 inches, leaving 17.34 inches, and a third chair (68.49 inches) does not fit at all. On that table six seats is the realistic count, two per side plus one at each end.
Clearance behind the chairs
Chairs have to pull out. As our own planning estimate, allow about 36 inches from the table edge to the wall or the next piece of furniture so a person can sit down and pass behind. That is a rule of thumb, not a published standard.
A worked example with invented numbers. The extended oval is 70.8 by 31.5 inches. Adding 36 inches on every side gives a clear area of 70.8 + 72 = 142.8 inches by 31.5 + 72 = 103.5 inches. That is about 11.9 feet by 8.6 feet, or 142.8 × 103.5 ≈ 14,780 square inches, about 103 square feet. The 63 inch table needs 63 + 72 = 135 inches by 29.5 + 72 = 101.5 inches, about 11.25 by 8.5 feet. If your dining room is smaller than that, eight chairs will not all pull out at once.
Table height and chair height
The tables are 29.5 to 29.9 inches high. The OLIXIS chair is 32.87 inches high overall, but its seat height was not given in the part we read. As our own estimate, a seat of about 18 inches under a 29.5 inch table leaves a gap of about 11.5 inches, which is a normal dining gap. Check the seat height before you order.
With chairs or without
Search for “dining table with chairs” and many results are tables only. The extendable oval listing is table only; the 63 inch listing describes the table and its use. Only the OLIXIS listing is a set of eight chairs, and it is chairs only. If you want a table and eight chairs in one order, you will need two listings, and you should check the chair width and seat height against the table’s apron.
Weight and moving
The 63 inch table weighs 42.2 pounds and the extendable oval weighs 83 pounds. An extending table is heavier because of its flip leaf and slides. Check the stairs and the doors before you order and ask how the leaf is stored.
Materials
The 63 inch table uses a reinforced metal frame and particleboard. The extendable oval is MDF. Both are engineered wood, which looks like wood grain but does not like standing water or heat. The OLIXIS chairs use faux leather on a foam seat and rubber wood legs. None of the listings gives a table weight limit in the part we read.
The three listings we read
63″ Dining Table for 6-8 People, Modern Large Kitchen Table (ASIN B0FZ861RJM). The listing gives 29.5 by 63 by 29.9 inches, a weight of 42.2 pounds, a walnut-look top on a metal frame and an Add to Cart button. Good for: a straight table that seats six with room to spare. Keep in mind: eight seats along 63 inches is tight, no chairs are included and no weight limit was recorded.
55″-70.8″ Extendable Oval Dining Table for 4-8 with Built-in Flip Leaf (ASIN B0H4GJSY74). The listing gives 55 inches closed, 70.8 inches extended, 31.5 by 29.5 inches, a weight of 83 pounds and an MDF build. Good for: a table that is small day to day and long for guests. Keep in mind: eight seats at 70.8 inches is tight and no chairs are included. The page showed an Add to Cart button. Several other ASINs of the same table showed up in search, so check which one you open.
OLIXIS Dining Chairs Set of 8, Wood Legs and PU Leather (ASIN B0DY6HWZDX). The listing gives 20.47 by 22.83 by 32.87 inches, a weight of 9.72 pounds, faux leather and rubber wood. Good for: eight matching chairs in one order. Keep in mind: no seat height was recorded, the weight is unclear and the chairs are not narrow. The page showed an Add to Cart button.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not trust “seats 8” on its own. Do not assume the chairs come with the table. Do not forget the clearance behind the chairs. And do not order eight chairs until you have measured the table’s long side against the chair width.
Who should skip an eight-seat table
If you host eight only a few times a year, a six-seat table with two extra stools may be enough. If your room is under about 12 by 9 feet, an eight-seat table leaves little room to move. If you want a booth feel, a bench along one side holds more people per foot; see dining room table with bench.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a table for 8 people?
About 70 to 72 inches or more on the long side, by our estimate of 24 inches per seat. Listings that claim 8 on a 63 inch table are tight.
Do dining tables come with chairs?
Many do not. The two tables we read are sold alone; the chairs are a separate listing.
How wide are dining chairs?
The set of 8 we read is 22.83 inches wide. Measure the chairs you pick.
How much space do I need around an 8 seat table?
As our planning estimate, about 36 inches on every side. A 70.8 by 31.5 inch table then needs about 11.9 by 8.6 feet.
Is an extendable table a good idea?
It is useful in a small room, though it is heavier and has a joint in the top.
Bottom line
Choose an 8 person dining table with chairs by long side length, chair width and room clearance, and read whether chairs are included. Of the three listings, the 63 inch table seats six comfortably, the extendable oval gets to 70.8 inches and just fits eight 22.83 inch chairs, and the OLIXIS set supplies the eight chairs. Measure the room before you order.
