For a studio, a shared bedroom or a work-from-home corner, a privacy divider should have four things: an opaque fabric, a stable base with wide feet, enough height for your needs, and a size that folds down. A privacy divider is a freestanding folding screen that blocks sight lines between two parts of a room. The three four-panel screens in our research data each open to 88 in wide and range from 67.2 in to 72 in tall. A screen that wide spans a good share of a small room, so measure the wall before you buy. A path of at least 36 in beside the screen is our planning yardstick for an opening you walk through every day.

Why people buy a divider for privacy

In a small home one room has to do several jobs. A studio apartment has a bed, a sofa and a desk in the same space. A shared bedroom needs two people to dress and sleep at different times. A work corner needs a visual break so you can leave work at the end of the day.

A privacy divider handles all of these without construction. It goes up in a few minutes, folds away, and can move from one place to another. It does not block sound, and it is not a wall, so the aim is visual privacy and a feeling of separation.

What makes a divider private

Not every folding screen blocks the view. A screen with an open weave, slats or a cutout pattern lets light and sight lines through. For privacy, check the panel material and how the maker describes it.

All three screens in the listing data are fabric panels on a metal frame, and each listing says the fabric is meant to be non-see-through. The HOMSCREENER page states 240 gsm polyester fabric. Check the SUNALLY and Kecreque pages for their fabric details. “Non-see-through” is the maker’s claim. If privacy is the main goal, hold a bright phone light behind a fabric sample when it arrives, or check how the fabric looks in the listing photos with the light behind it.

Three four-panel screens from the listing data

These come from product pages in our research data. Where we give no number, check the listing.

  • SUNALLY Room Divider, 4 panels with wheels, black. Listed at 88 in wide by 72 in high, weight 7.51 kg. The name says it has wheels, and the listing mentions brakes.
  • HOMSCREENER Room Divider, 4 panel, 88 in wide, black. Listed at 88 in wide by 71 in high, with 240 gsm polyester fabric. Check the listing for the hardware that comes in the box.
  • Kecreque Room Divider, 4 panel, white, with 3 wide feet. Listed at 88 in wide by 67.2 in high. The listing says it folds to 22 in by 67.5 in, so it can stand in a corner when not in use.

Panel count and width

Most folding screens come in four, six or eight panels. The total width in our listings, 88 in, is the width when the screen is fully extended. In practice you never stand it perfectly flat, because a flat line of panels is less stable than a zigzag.

Each of the four panels is about 22 in wide: 88 in divided by 4 equals 22 in. That matches the 22 in folded width on the Kecreque listing. A screen with more panels covers more width, but it takes more floor when folded and is heavier to move.

Height: how tall is tall enough?

A screen of 67.2 in to 72 in blocks the view of a person standing a short distance away, but not above it. If your concern is privacy while sitting on a bed or at a desk, almost any of these heights helps. If you need to block sight lines of a standing person from a close distance, you may need a taller screen than those here. The tallest in the listing data is 72 in. Check the listing and decide which sight lines matter in your room.

Stability: feet and wheels

A tall, thin panel can tip. Two features help.

  • Wide feet. The Kecreque name mentions 3 wide feet. A wider foot spreads the load so the screen does not rock when someone brushes it.
  • Lockable wheels. The SUNALLY name lists wheels, and its page mentions brakes. Wheels make it easy to move the screen to clean or rearrange, and the brakes keep it in place.

If you keep the screen in a home with children or pets, place it in a zigzag, not a straight line. A zigzag stands more firmly than a flat line. Never lean on a divider or let children climb on it.

Worked example: a divider in a 12-foot studio

This is our own planning example, with the arithmetic shown. Say your studio is 12 ft (144 in) wide, and you want to separate the bed from the entry. You will place the SUNALLY screen straight across the room, with one end flush against the left wall. We measure only along the 144 in width.

  • Opening beside the screen. 144 in minus 88 in equals 56 in of open floor at the far end.
  • Compare with the yardstick. The US Access Board uses 36 in as the minimum clear width of an accessible route. A home does not have to meet it, but it is a handy planning number. 56 in minus 36 in equals 20 in to spare, so you can walk through the opening comfortably.
  • Fully closed vs. open. If you want to close the opening, you need 56 in more of divider. A second screen of the same width would give 88 in minus 56 in equals 32 in of overlap.

Now the height. The screen is 72 in tall. In a room with a 96 in (8 ft) ceiling, 96 in minus 72 in equals 24 in between the top of the screen and the ceiling. That gap lets air and light move between the two areas, which is one reason a divider does not feel like a wall.

Folded storage: the Kecreque screen folds to 22 in by 67.5 in. If you have a free gap 24 in wide beside a wardrobe, 24 in minus 22 in equals 2 in of spare width. The folded thickness is not in the listing data, so check the listing before you count on that gap.

Where to put a privacy divider

  • Between the bed and the entry, to keep the bed out of sight for guests.
  • Across a shared bedroom, to give each person a private side.
  • In front of a desk, to hide a work corner after hours.
  • Around a changing area, using a zigzag or an L-shape.
  • Beside a window or a doorway, to block a sight line from outside.

Who should buy a privacy divider

  • Studio renters who need separate zones without building a wall.
  • Shared bedroom households such as siblings, roommates or a couple with a baby.
  • Remote workers who want a visual cue that the workday is over.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who needs sound privacy. Fabric panels block sight, not noise.
  • People with very small rooms. An 88 in screen takes a lot of width, and a curtain on a tension rod may fit better.
  • Anyone expecting a solid wall. A divider can be pushed over if someone leans on it.

Common mistakes

  • Buying for the wrong sight line. Think about where people stand and sit, then check the height.
  • Placing it in a straight line. A zigzag stands more firmly.
  • Ignoring storage. Know where the screen will go when it is folded.
  • Blocking an exit. Never place a divider where it blocks a door, window or path you may need in an emergency.
  • Skipping the care notes. Check each listing for how to clean the fabric before you wipe it.

Frequently asked questions

Can people see through a fabric privacy divider?

The listings in the listing data describe their fabric as non-see-through. That is the maker’s claim, so check how light passes through a sample or the photos in the listing before you rely on it.

How wide is a four-panel divider?

The three four-panel screens here are 88 in wide when fully extended, so each panel is about 22 in.

Do privacy dividers fall over easily?

A tall screen can tip if bumped. Look for wide feet or wheels with locking brakes, and set it in a zigzag.

Can I fold a divider flat for storage?

Yes. The Kecreque listing gives a folded size of 22 in by 67.5 in. The other listings do not state a folded size in the data we have, so check the page.

Is a divider better than a curtain?

It depends on the room. A divider moves and stores easily and needs no drilling. A curtain on a rod takes less floor space but needs a fixing point.
