A ship wheel mirror is a round wall mirror framed by a wooden steering wheel, with spokes and handles around the rim. It works as decor first and a mirror second, because the spokes and the rim take up a large share of the diameter. The three models compared here range from about 15 inches to 30 inches across, and their listed weights run from under one pound to 6.6 pounds. Choose the size by the wall you have, check how much of the diameter is actual mirror, and hang it with hardware rated above its weight. A planning estimate for the center height is about 57 inches from the floor.

What a ship wheel mirror does well
A ship wheel mirror adds a nautical accent without needing a full beach theme. It suits an entryway, a bathroom with coastal touches, a stairwell or a hallway wall. The round shape softens a room with many straight lines, and the spokes add texture. In a small room, a round mirror also bounces light around, though the spokes reduce the reflecting surface.
It does not replace a mirror for checking an outfit. For that, a large rectangular or leaning mirror is better. Think of a ship wheel mirror as a feature piece that happens to reflect.
The three mirrors we compare
All three are wall mirrors shaped like a ship wheel, but their sizes and finishes are quite different.
Vercraft, 30 inches, white handle
The Vercraft mirror is listed at 30 by 30 inches with a white handle, and a weight of 6.6 pounds. Check the listing for whether the handles come off, since removing them would make the footprint smaller. At about 30 inches in diameter it is the largest of the three, and it suits a wall above a sofa, a bed or a console.
Nagina International, 24 inches, white Santorini
The Nagina mirror is listed at 24 by 24 inches in a white Santorini finish, and the viewing area is about 13.5 inches. The listing does not give a weight in the data we have, so check the page.
CoTa Global Pacific, 14.75 inches, blue
The CoTa Global boat wheel mirror is listed at 14.75 by 13.25 inches, with a weight of 15.2 ounces. 15.2 ounces divided by 16 ounces per pound is 0.95 pounds. This is the smallest of the three, and it is a small accent for a gallery wall or a bathroom nook rather than a main mirror.
Understanding the viewing area
The most surprising number on a ship wheel mirror is the viewing area. Only the Nagina listing gives one, and it says about 13.5 inches. That means the mirror itself is a circle of about 13.5 inches inside a wheel that is 24 inches across.
- Rim and spoke allowance. 24 in minus 13.5 in equals 10.5 in in total. Divided between two sides, 10.5 in divided by 2 equals 5.25 in on each side.
- Share of the diameter that is mirror. 13.5 in divided by 24 in equals about 0.56, so the mirror is about 56 percent of the diameter. By area it is much smaller, because area grows with the square of the diameter: 0.56 times 0.56 equals about 0.32, so about a third of the circle’s area.
For the Vercraft and CoTa listings the data we have does not give a viewing area, so check the listing. As a rough comparison, expect a viewing area that is smaller than the stated diameter by a similar proportion, and do not buy one of these to see your whole face unless the listing says the viewing area is large.
Choosing a size for your wall
Think about the space around the mirror. A round mirror looks best when the wall around it has breathing room.
- Above a console or table. Choose a mirror no wider than the furniture below it, and often about two thirds to three quarters of its width. A 24 inch or 30 inch mirror suits a 36 to 48 inch console.
- Above a bed or sofa. The 30 inch size gives enough presence, but check that the wheel handles do not poke into the headboard.
- In a gallery wall. The 14.75 inch mirror blends with frames.
If a model has detachable handles, check the listing, because removing them helps in tight spots by cutting the parts that stick out and making the footprint on the wall smaller.
Worked example: hanging a 30 inch mirror over a console
This is our own planning estimate, with the arithmetic shown. The wall is in an entryway with an 8 ft ceiling (96 in). A console table, 34 in high and 40 in wide (both assumed, so measure your own), stands against the wall. We hang the 30 inch Vercraft mirror above it, centered on the console. A common gallery guideline puts the center of artwork around 57 in from the floor, and we use that as a planning estimate.
The height direction first:
- Bottom of the mirror. The radius is 30 in divided by 2 equals 15 in. 57 in minus 15 in equals 42 in above the floor.
- Top of the mirror. 57 in plus 15 in equals 72 in above the floor.
- Gap above the console. 42 in minus 34 in equals 8 in between the console top and the bottom of the mirror.
- Gap below the ceiling. 96 in minus 72 in equals 24 in.
Now the width direction, which is a separate measurement along the wall:
- Console width versus mirror width. 40 in minus 30 in equals 10 in in total. Centered, that is 10 in divided by 2 equals 5 in of console showing on each side of the mirror.
The mirror is narrower than the console by a comfortable margin, and the 8 in gap above the console leaves room for a lamp base or a bowl. If you want a larger gap for tall objects, raise the mirror by a few inches and check that the top is still well below the ceiling.
Hanging hardware and weight
The Vercraft mirror is listed at 6.6 pounds, which is a real weight for a single nail. The CoTa mirror is listed at under one pound, and the Nagina weight is not in the listing data. The data we have does not describe the hanging hardware of any of the three, so check the listing. As a general planning rule, choose a hook or anchor rated well above the mirror weight, and fasten into a stud or use a wall anchor suited to your wall type. Never hang a mirror over a bed or a seat without hardware you trust.
If the mirror has a wire or a sawtooth hanger on the back, test it with a firm tug before you let go. Round frames can rotate on a single hook, so a second point of contact or a small piece of adhesive putty on the lower edge keeps the wheel level.
Finish, care and moisture
White finishes show dust, and distressed finishes hide some wear. For a bathroom, check whether the finish suits humidity. The data we have does not give a moisture rating for any of the three. Keep the mirror out of direct splash zones. Clean the glass with a lightly dampened soft cloth and wipe the frame dry.
Who should buy a ship wheel mirror
- People who like a coastal accent. It reads as nautical straight away.
- Small entryway owners. The round shape fits above a narrow console.
- Gallery wall builders. A smaller wheel adds a distinctive shape among frames.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who needs a usable mirror for dressing. The viewing area is small relative to the diameter.
- People who dislike themed decor. A wheel will always look nautical.
- Rooms with limited wall space. A 30 inch wheel needs room around it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading diameter as mirror size. The diameter includes the rim and spokes.
- Ignoring protruding handles. They can catch on a headboard or a door.
- Hanging too high. A center much higher than 57 in puts the glass above most people’s eyes.
- Under-rating the hardware. Even a light mirror can fall if it hangs on a thin nail.
Checklist before you buy
- Measure the wall width and height.
- Choose a diameter and subtract the handles if they stick out.
- Check the listed viewing area, if there is one.
- Match the hanging hardware to the weight.
- Confirm the finish and color against the photos.

Frequently asked questions
How big is the mirror in a ship wheel mirror?
It is smaller than the wheel. The Nagina listing gives a viewing area of about 13.5 inches in a 24 inch wheel. For other models, check the listing.
What size ship wheel mirror should I buy?
For a 36 to 48 inch console, a 24 or 30 inch wheel suits. For a gallery wall or a small nook, a wheel around 15 inches works.
How heavy is a ship wheel mirror?
In our listings, from 0.95 pounds for the small CoTa model to 6.6 pounds for the 30 inch Vercraft. The Nagina weight is not in the listing data. Pick hardware rated above the listed weight.
Can I remove the handles?
Check each listing. The data we have does not say whether the handles come off on any of the three.
Where should the center of the mirror be?
A planning estimate is about 57 inches from the floor. Adjust it for furniture below.
