Quick answer
If your mattress comes with a warranty that asks for a rigid, flat foundation, a traditional box spring may not satisfy it; Nest Bedding’s warranty, for example, excludes traditional box springs or foundations that do not provide rigid, flat support. If you already own a box spring that suits your mattress, a 7 inch metal frame is the cheapest way to hold it. If you do not, a platform frame with slats saves buying one. The three 7 inch queen frames below weigh 16.37 to 18 pounds, and the stack, with a 9 inch box spring and a 12 inch mattress (our assumptions), is 28 inches high.
What each part does
The frame is the structure on the floor: rails, legs and, often, a center bar. The box spring is a foundation that sits on the frame and under the mattress. A platform frame replaces the box spring with slats or a deck. You need one or the other: a mattress cannot rest on bare rails.
A frame “for box spring and mattress”, as the three below are titled, has rails and a center bar but no slats, so it expects a box spring on top. If you put a mattress straight on it, the mattress is unsupported between the rails.
The warranty check
Mattress makers set their own rules. We opened the Nest Bedding warranty on 2026-10-01. It excludes traditional box springs or foundations that do not provide rigid, flat support, accepts a solid platform foundation or slats spaced no more than four inches apart, and for a queen or larger requires a rigid center support that reaches the floor. That is one maker; yours may accept a box spring. Read the warranty for your mattress before you buy a frame, and if it names a foundation type, buy that type.
Worked example: how tall the stack gets
This is our own arithmetic. A 7 inch frame is the same in all three listings. Box spring height varies, and we do not have a figure from a source, so we show two assumptions, 5 and 9 inches, and a 12 inch mattress.
| Setup | Frame | Box spring (assumed) | Mattress (assumed) | Top of mattress |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 in frame, low box spring | 7 in | 5 in | 12 in | 24 in |
| 7 in frame, standard box spring | 7 in | 9 in | 12 in | 28 in |
| 12 in platform frame (no box spring) | 12 in | none | 12 in | 24 in |
The two 24 inch setups come out the same, a 7 inch frame with a low box spring and a 12 inch platform frame. The 28 inch stack is 4 inches taller than either. If someone in the household finds a tall bed hard to get onto, the box spring height is the number to ask about.
What the listings say
Amazon Basics Metal Bed Frame, 9-Leg Support Base for Box Spring and Mattress, Queen, black (ASIN B07D4BD47F). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 7 inches, a weight of 16.63 pounds, metal and a rating of 600 pounds. The title says tool-free easy assembly. Best for: the simplest, lightest frame for an existing box spring. Watch out: 600 pounds is the lowest rating of the three, and on the king version of this frame we found two different numbers in one listing, so read both table and bullets for yours.
Awesofurni Queen Bed Frame with LED Light, 7 Inch Heavy Duty Metal Base for Box Spring (ASIN B0FLXRDJ9Y). The table gives 80 by 60 by 7 inches, a weight of 18 pounds, metal and a rating of 2,000 pounds. The bullets give solid steel construction for a box spring and mattress, app or remote controlled LED lights, anti-slip foot pads and an adjustable frame length of 75, 76, 80 or 81 inches to fit standard and short queen mattresses. Best for: a frame that adjusts to a short queen. Watch out: the LED lights add an electrical part you may not want, and the adjustment means you must set the length to your mattress.
NOAH MEGATRON Queen Size Metal Bed Frame, 7 Inch Heavy Duty, 9-Leg Support for Box Spring and Mattress Foundation, Black (ASIN B07BR58DXM). The table gives 76 by 60 by 7 inches, a weight of 16.37 pounds and a rating of 3,000 pounds. The bullets give nine legs in a 3 by 3 layout with three center legs, plastic gaskets at each leg, tool-free assembly in under 10 minutes and compact packaging. Best for: a light frame that fits through narrow doors. Watch out: the 76 inch length is 4 inches short of an 80 inch queen mattress per Amerisleep; the listing does not say whether the length is adjustable, so see our black metal bed frame guide and ask the seller.
How the three compare
| Listing | Length | Weight | Rating on the listing | Adjustable length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Basics | 79.5 in | 16.63 lb | 600 lb | Not stated |
| Awesofurni | 80 in | 18 lb | 2,000 lb | 75 / 76 / 80 / 81 in |
| NOAH MEGATRON | 76 in | 16.37 lb | 3,000 lb | Not stated |
The heaviest rating again belongs to the lightest frame, so the ratings are each seller’s own claim, not a comparison of strength. Use the number only to check that it is well above the weight of the box spring, the mattress and the sleepers.
How to choose
Check your mattress warranty first. If it asks for slats or a solid platform, a box spring frame is the wrong choice.
If you own a box spring, a 7 inch frame is the minimum.
Check the length against the mattress. 79.5 to 80 inches for a queen.
Check the center support. The Nest rule needs one that reaches the floor for a queen; the frames above list center legs, but only the NOAH listing gives the count (three).
Weight on the frame: a quick check
The rating on a listing should exceed the total weight on the frame, not just the sleepers. A simple sum, with figures that are our assumptions: a queen mattress of 80 pounds, a box spring of 60 pounds and two adults weighing 350 pounds together is 490 pounds, which is under the Amazon Basics rating of 600 pounds but not by a large margin. Your numbers will differ, so weigh the mattress and the box spring if you can and add the sleepers.
If the sum is close to the rating, choose the frame with the higher rating or a platform frame with more legs and a stated center support. Remember that the ratings are each seller’s own claim and that dynamic loads, such as a person sitting down hard on the edge, are not the same as a still weight.
Mistakes to avoid
Putting a mattress on a box spring frame with no box spring. There are no slats.
Stacking a box spring on a platform frame. It adds height with no benefit.
Assuming any box spring is accepted. Some mattress warranties exclude traditional ones.
Ignoring the stack height. The 28 inch example is 4 inches taller than a platform setup.
When a different frame is better
If you do not own a box spring, a platform frame saves buying one; see queen bed with platform and platform bed frame. For slat counts and spacing, see bed slats. For a king, see king mattress with frame.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a box spring with a bed frame?
Only if the frame has no slats or deck. The three frames above have none, so they expect a box spring on top.
What does a box spring do?
It is a foundation between the frame and the mattress. Some mattress warranties require a particular kind.
How high is a bed with a box spring?
Frame plus box spring plus mattress. With a 7 inch frame, a 9 inch box spring and a 12 inch mattress, 28 inches; the box spring height is our assumption.
Can I use a box spring on a platform frame?
You can, but it raises the bed and is not needed.
Do mattress warranties allow box springs?
It depends on the maker. Nest Bedding’s excludes traditional box springs that are not rigid and flat. Check yours.
Which frame holds the most weight?
The listings state 600, 2,000 and 3,000 pounds, but the sellers do not say how they measured, so do not rank them by it.
