Quick answer
A queen mattress is 60 inches wide, so a headboard of 60 to 62 inches covers it without a gap. Choose the mounting type first: a wall-mounted headboard needs a wall you can stick or screw to, a mattress-mounted one needs no tools but depends on the mattress staying put and a panel kit covers any width you can count. Then check the three numbers a listing may not give: width, height above the mattress and thickness.
The four mounting types
Wall-mounted headboard. A single panel that hangs on the wall or sticks to it. The Hearth & Harbor listing below says it mounts with double-sided tape and needs no tools. Good for renters if the tape suits the paint, and the headboard does not move with the bed.
Peel-and-stick panels. Small upholstered tiles that you assemble into any width and height. The IFNOW listing below has panels listed at 10 by 24 inches and says the wall should be wiped clean and dry first, with included glue for textured walls.
Mattress-mounted headboard. A freestanding cushion held by metal frames that slide between the mattress and the base. The Liiwepo listing below describes two metal frames and says the position adjusts to the mattress thickness.
Frame-bolted headboard. A panel that bolts to a frame with headboard holes. We cover this type for king beds in the king size headboard guide, and for queen beds that come with a headboard see the queen bed frame with headboard guide.
Width: match the mattress
Amerisleep’s chart gives a queen mattress as 60 by 80 inches. A headboard narrower than the mattress leaves bare wall at the sides; one a little wider hides the edges. The Hearth & Harbor headboard is listed at 61 inches wide, which is 1 inch wider than the mattress, or half an inch on each side if you center it. That is a good fit. The panels are 10 inches wide each, so you need 60 divided by 10, which is 6 panels, to span the mattress in one row.
Worked example: how high to hang a wall-mounted headboard
Say the mattress top is 24 inches above the floor (an assumption, so measure yours) and the headboard is 23.6 inches tall, as the Hearth & Harbor listing states. If you hang it with its bottom edge at 20 inches, a little below the mattress top so no wall shows between the mattress and the headboard (our practical suggestion, not a rule), the top edge is at 20 plus 23.6, which is 43.6 inches. The part you see above the mattress is 43.6 minus 24, which is 19.6 inches.
For the panels, 6 panels of 24 inches high in a row cover 60 by 24 inches, which is 1,440 square inches. A second row doubles the height to 48 inches and takes 12 panels. The listing does not say how many panels come in the pack we opened, so count the pack before you plan the layout.
What the listings leave out
A headboard listing is often a template. Two of the four we opened give no usable size:
- The BSHOMGI hanging linen headboard lists its size as 3.93 inches wide and 25.5 inches high in the table, and its item dimensions as 0.01 by 3.14 by 11.8 inches, which cannot both be right for a queen headboard. We did not pick it for that reason.
- The Liiwepo queen listing has no measurements table. Its bullets say the lumbar area is 5 inches thick and give no width or height. Its king version lists 76 by 23 inches and 5 inches deep, but the queen listing states no width or height, so we cannot give you either.
When a listing gives no width, ask the seller before you order, or pick one that does.
Three queen headboards read on 2026-10-01
We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The Hearth & Harbor listing shows “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so its cart button is hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened it.
Hearth & Harbor wall-mounted queen headboard, velvet. The table gives a size of queen, 61 inches wide and 23.6 high, a depth of 3.5 inches and a weight of 7.43 pounds. The bullets give double-sided tape mounting, a velvet-paneled front, foam fill and stain-resistant upholstery. Best for: a renter who wants a light headboard on the wall. Watch out: tape holds a 7.43 pound panel only on a wall it suits; check the tape’s weight rating.
IFNOW peel-and-stick wall headboard panels, medium grey, queen. The table gives panels of 10 inches wide, 24 high and 1 inch deep and a weight of 15.42 pounds. The bullets say you can assemble the panels into any design, advise wiping the wall clean and dry and give glue for textured walls, and say the line comes in three sizes and seven colors. Best for: a custom width or a tall headboard. Watch out: the number of panels in the pack is not stated.
Liiwepo queen headboard, mattress-mounted, beige. There is no measurements table. The bullets say no assembly is required, allow 72 hours for the headboard to restore its shape, describe two metal frames that fit various mattresses and bed frames, say the position adjusts to the mattress thickness and give a 5 inch thick lumbar support area with linen fabric over foam. Best for: someone who wants no tools and a thick cushion. Watch out: no width or height is stated.
How the three compare
| Listing | Mounting | Width | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hearth & Harbor | Tape on the wall | 61 in | 23.6 in | 7.43 lb |
| IFNOW panels | Peel and stick | 10 in per panel | 24 in per panel | 15.42 lb (pack) |
| Liiwepo | Mattress-mounted | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
What to measure before you order
Measure four things first. The mattress width, to match the headboard. The mattress top height from the floor, because that sets how high a wall-mounted headboard hangs. The wall, for studs or a surface that tape and glue suit, because a wall with a textured finish needs the glue or screws. And any window sill or shelf above the bed, because a headboard that rises 43.6 inches from the floor, as in the example above, can cover or collide with them. Write the four numbers down before you compare listings.
Mistakes to avoid
Ordering without a width. If the listing gives none, ask.
Hanging the headboard too high. A gap of bare wall between the mattress and the headboard looks like a mistake.
Forgetting the wall. Tape and glue suit smooth, clean paint; a textured wall needs the glue or screws.
Ignoring mattress thickness. A thick mattress covers the lower part of a freestanding headboard.
Assuming one pack covers the width. Count panels: 60 inches takes 6 panels of 10 inches.
When you may not need a separate headboard
If you are buying a frame anyway, one that includes a headboard costs less and fits by design; see the platform bed frame guide and the bed frame with storage guide. IKEA’s MALM frame comes with a headboard and says a very thick mattress may partly cover it, see our MALM bedframe guide. If the wall is the feature, painting a band behind the bed costs nothing.
Frequently asked questions
How wide is a headboard for a queen bed?
A queen mattress is 60 inches wide per Amerisleep, so look for 60 to 62 inches. The wall-mounted listing we read is 61 inches wide.
How high should a queen headboard be?
It depends on the mattress and the look. A 23.6 inch headboard hung with its bottom edge at 20 inches above a 24 inch mattress shows 19.6 inches above the mattress.
Which type suits a renter best?
A mattress-mounted headboard needs no wall fixing at all. A tape-mounted or peel-and-stick one avoids screws but depends on the paint, so check the instructions.
How many peel-and-stick panels do I need for a queen?
With panels 10 inches wide, 6 panels span 60 inches in one row, and a second row of 6 doubles the height from 24 to 48 inches.
Can I attach a headboard without a frame?
Yes. Wall-mounted and mattress-mounted types do not need the frame. Check the mounting type before you buy.
Do peel-and-stick headboards damage walls?
The IFNOW listing advises a clean, dry wall and includes glue for textured walls. We have not tested removal, so check the instructions for your paint.
Will a queen headboard fit a king or full bed?
Not well. A king is 76 inches wide and a full is 54 inches per Amerisleep, so choose the width for your mattress.
