U Shaped Sofa: Check the Pit, the Depth and the Door

Quick answer

A U shaped sofa needs three numbers that a straight sofa does not: the width across the open side, the depth of the two arms, and the width of the pit in the middle where a table and your feet go. Listings give the first often, the second rarely and the third never, so you work out the pit yourself. In the three U-shaped sofas we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01, only one gives its full depth: 99.16 inches, which on a 14 ft room leaves 68.84 inches.

We have not tested these products, and every size and material is the seller’s. Several fields look wrong or are missing, and we say where. If the room is under about 12 feet on its shortest side, an L-shape is, in our judgment, the safer choice; see sofas and sectionals.

What a U shape asks of a room

A U-shaped sectional has a main run along one wall and two arms that come toward you, so it uses a wall and parts of two others, or it stands in the middle of an open room. The benefit is a conversation pit where several people face each other. The cost is floor area and a long delivery.

The room-share check

Use the bounding box, which overstates a U because the pit is empty. Worked example, using the 125 inch U-shaped sleeper listing, which gives a size of 124.05 in wide by 99.16 in deep:

• Box footprint: 124.05 x 99.16 = 12,300.8 sq in.
• Our example room, 12 by 14 ft (144 x 168 in), is 24,192 sq in, so the box is 12,300.8 / 24,192 = 50.8 percent of the floor.
• Width left on the 144 in side: 144 − 124.05 = 19.95 in.
• Depth left on the 168 in side: 168 − 99.16 = 68.84 in.

Half of the room’s floor is a lot, though the middle is open. The 19.95 in left on the short side is too narrow to walk past comfortably; OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways. In a 12 by 14 ft room this U does not leave a walkway along its width, so a larger room or an L-shape is a better fit. These are our planning numbers, not a standard.

The pit test

The pit is the open middle. Its width is the overall width minus the depth of the two arm pieces. The listings do not give the arm depth, so here is a labeled assumption. The 127 inch corduroy listing gives a 127.2 in width and a 33.5 in depth for its pieces. If the two arms are 33.5 in deep, the pit is 127.2 − 2 x 33.5 = 60.2 in wide.

OROA suggests 14 to 18 inches between a sofa and a coffee table. A table needs that gap on both sides, so the widest table that fits is about 60.2 − 2 x 16 = 28.2 in, using 16 in as the middle of the range. That is a small table. If you want a 36 in table, the pit has to be at least 36 + 32 = 68 in wide, which means a longer sofa or shallower arms.

This is an estimate that depends on how you assemble the pieces. Ask the seller for the pit width, or sketch the layout from the module sizes.

Delivery and weight

U-shaped sets come in several boxes. The 127 inch listing weighs 369 lb in its table, about 61.5 lb per seat for the six seats it lists (369 / 6). The 116 inch listing weighs 110.2 lb and ships as four packs, so each pack averages about 27.6 lb (110.2 / 4). The 125 inch sleeper lists 22 lb in its table, which cannot be the weight of a pull-out sleeper, so ignore it and ask.

Furniture Academy’s rule is that the doorway must be wider than at least one of a piece’s width, height, depth and diagonal depth. Measure the pieces, not the whole U.

Three U-shaped sofas read on 2026-10-01

Keep in mind: the 33.5 in depth is a piece depth, not the depth of the assembled U, and the table lists a seat interior width of 29.5 in, which is more than the seat depth, so it may be the width of one seat.

The table gives a 21 in seat depth and 110.2 lb in four packs, and the bullets say it combines into U or L shapes, comes with removable footrests, and has a sturdy frame on black plastic legs with metal pegs between seats. Good for the lightest carry of the three. Keep in mind: the table gives no overall width or depth beyond the title’s 116.14 in, so the arm depth and the pit are unknown.

The size row reads 124.05 in wide, 99.16 in deep and 39.76 in high, and the bullets describe a pull-out bed for a full size mattress, a storage chaise, a solid wood and plywood frame and pocket coil seating. Good for a guest room that needs a bed. Keep in mind: the table also shows 0.39 in seat depth, 22 lb and a 48.84 x 39.04 x 15.65 in size, which look like shipping-carton or filler numbers, so trust the size row and ask the seller about the rest.

Where the open side and the TV go

A U has an open side, and that side should face the room’s entrance or the screen, not both. If the open side faces the door, guests walk straight into the pit; if it faces the TV, everyone watches from the arms and the main run. Both are layout choices, and neither is a rule. The pit also needs a clear route in: with the 60.2 in pit from our estimate, a 30 inch walkway, the low end of OROA’s 30 to 36 inch range, leaves 30.2 in of pit beside it (60.2 − 30), which is room for a table about 14 inches deep if you keep a 16 inch gap on one side. That is small, so a U is best in a room where the pit can be larger than ours.

Questions to send the seller

• What are the depth of each arm piece and the width of the pit when assembled?
• Does the set convert to an L, and how many pieces does that use?
• How many boxes does it ship in, and what does each box weigh?
• Is the cover removable and washable?
• If it has a pull-out bed, what are the open dimensions?

Choosing a U shaped sofa

1. Measure the room and compare it with the box footprint. If it is above roughly 50 percent of the floor, think again.
2. Work out the pit width and the biggest table that fits.
3. Check the walkway on the open side against 30 to 36 inches.
4. Ask how it ships and how much each box weighs.
5. If it has a pull-out bed, check the open size too; see bed with couch.

You may not need a U. Three or four people on an L plus a small coffee table cover most evenings with half the floor.

Mistakes to avoid

• Reading one piece depth as the whole U depth.
• Forgetting the pit. A small pit means a very small table.
• Trusting a weight of 22 lb for a large sofa. It is almost certainly wrong.
• Placing it without a walkway on the open side.
• Not measuring each piece through the doors and stairs.

Bottom line
