Quick answer

A modular sectional couch is built from separate pieces, so you plan by the piece: add up the widths for the run you want, check the depth of each piece, and make sure every piece comes from the same system. Do not assume two makers’ pieces fit together. In the three listings we read on Amazon on 2026-09-30 the corner pieces are 33.46 and 37 inches deep, a 3.54 inch difference that would leave a visible step between them.

We have not tested any of these products, and all sizes are the seller’s numbers. For the shape decision between a sofa and a sectional, see sofas and sectionals; for general sofa checks, see sofas and couches.

What “modular” means in practice

A fixed sectional has a chaise or corner built into one frame. A modular sectional splits the seating into pieces, such as a corner, a straight seat, an armless seat and an ottoman, and you choose how many of each to use. The promise is flexibility: start with an L, add a piece when you move, or turn an L into a straight run.

The limit is that the pieces must be designed to fit each other. Some are sold as a set, like the 3-piece Modway Auren below, and some as single modules, like the two corner chairs. Read the listing for what is included, because a listing for one corner chair does not include the rest of the couch.

Plan the run in inches

Write down the wall you will use and the depth you can give up. Then add piece widths. Because we only have a few module sizes from the listings, the examples below are arithmetic, not a real layout guide.

Worked example, a straight run using the 3-piece Auren set. The listing gives 128.74 in wide by 43.31 in deep. On a 12 ft (144 in) wall, 144 − 128.74 = 15.26 in remains, which is enough for a slim side table. On a 10 ft (120 in) wall, 120 − 128.74 = −8.74 in, so the run is 8.74 inches too long.

Worked example, two corner pieces side by side. Two Novilla corner chairs at 33.46 in wide are 2 x 33.46 = 66.92 in wide. Two Modway Mingle corner chairs at 37 in wide are 2 x 37 = 74 in wide. The listings do not say how corner chairs connect, so treat these as width sums only.

Why mixing makers is risky

The Novilla corner chair is 33.46 in deep and the Mingle corner chair is 37 in deep. The difference is 37 − 33.46 = 3.54 in. Put them side by side and the front edges would not line up, and the seat heights cannot be compared, because the Novilla table gives 16.54 in while the Mingle table repeats its 27 in overall height. The listings do not say whether pieces from different makers can connect, so assume they cannot unless a listing says otherwise.

Even inside one maker’s line, check the piece names. A “corner chair” is not the same as an “armless chair” or an “ottoman”, and a set can contain a different number of pieces than its title suggests. The Auren listing is titled as a 3-piece modular sofa while its product table says “Number of Pieces: 1”, so ask the seller what arrives in the box.

Moving and delivery

The main practical benefit of a modular set is that each piece is lighter and smaller than a whole sectional. Our sources on delivery say to measure each doorway, hallway and stair, and to compare the opening with the piece’s width, height, depth and diagonal depth.

  • Novilla corner chair: 33.46 x 33.46 x 27.56 in, 33.1 lb.
  • Mingle corner chair: 37 x 37 x 27 in, 51 lb.
  • Auren 3-piece set: 209 lb in total. If the three pieces weighed the same (an assumption), each would be 209 / 3 = 69.7 lb.

Furniture Academy’s rule is that the opening must be wider than at least one of the piece’s key measurements. A 32 inch door clear width is greater than the 27.56 in height of the Novilla piece and the 27 in height of the Mingle piece, so both can pass in principle, tilted or on their side. The U.S. Access Board uses 32 inches as a short-distance minimum in accessible routes, so it is a reasonable worst case to plan for. A 209 lb set is best handled one piece at a time, so ask how the Auren ships.

Three listings read on 2026-09-30

Novilla Modular Sectional Sofa, No Assembly Cloud Sectional Couch, Chenille, Corner Chair. The table gives 33.46 x 33.46 x 27.56 in (D x W x H), 33.1 lb, a 23.62 in seat depth, a 16.54 in seat height, an 8.66 in arm width, a 27.55 in arm height and a 300 lb maximum. The bullets describe a no-assembly boneless design, movable modules, Smarts Coil spring support and OEKO-TEX certified fabric. Good for starting small with a single piece. Keep in mind: the listing is for one corner chair, so a full sectional needs more pieces, and the 16.54 in seat is low.

Modway Mingle Vegan Leather Sectional Sofa Corner Chair, White, 37 x 37 x 27. The table gives 37 x 37 x 27 in and 51 lb, and the bullets describe elegant piping, a spacious profile and vegan leather upholstery. Good for a corner seat in vegan leather. Keep in mind: the table repeats 37 in as the seat depth and 27 in as the seat height, which are the overall depth and height again, so those two fields look copied.

Modway Auren Vegan Leather 3 Piece Modular Sofa, Camel. The table gives 43.31 x 128.74 x 26.38 in and 209 lb, with three seat cushions. The bullets describe faux leather, deep seats, wide cushioned armrests, a solid wood frame with a sinuous spring system, and a design you can use as a 3-seater, style separately or expand with additional pieces. Good for a wide wall and a long run of seating. Keep in mind: it is the heaviest by far, the piece count is listed two ways, and at 128.74 in it needs a wall of 11 ft or more.

Decision guide

  1. Do you know your final layout? If yes, buy a fixed sectional or a complete set. If not, modules let you grow.
  2. Will you move? Smaller pieces are easier to carry through hallways.
  3. Is the material important? Faux leather and chenille feel and wear differently; for leather terms see leather sofa.
  4. Do you need an ottoman or chaise? Check whether your line includes one and whether it is sold separately.
  5. Do you need sleeping space? Some boneless couches convert to a bed; see bed with couch.

You may not need a modular sectional at all. If your room has a fixed corner, a single L-shaped piece can be simpler. If you only need two or three seats, a sofa or loveseat is easier to place.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying one module and assuming the rest will fit. Confirm the line is still sold and the pieces match.
  • Mixing makers. A 3.54 inch depth difference shows up at the front edge.
  • Counting seats instead of inches. Pieces that say “1 seat” vary by 3.5 inches in width.
  • Ignoring the seat height. A 16.54 inch seat is lower than many traditional sofas.
  • Forgetting fabric care. Read the care instructions for each cover.

Bottom line

Plan a modular sectional by the piece: sum the widths, compare the depths, confirm the pieces belong to the same line, and measure the delivery path for one piece at a time. If the listing does not say what is in the box, ask before you order.

Frequently asked questions

What is a modular sectional couch?

It is a sectional made of separate pieces, such as corner, straight, armless and ottoman modules, that you can arrange in different shapes. Pieces are designed to fit together within one product line.

Can I mix modules from different brands?

The listings we read do not say that different makers’ pieces are compatible, and the corner pieces we compared differ in depth by 3.54 inches. Assume they do not match unless a listing says they do.

How many pieces do I need for an L-shape?

It depends on the line. Use the maker’s layout guide or ask the seller, because the listing for a single corner chair does not show a full L.

Are modular sectionals easier to move?

Usually the pieces are lighter and smaller: 33.1 and 51 lb for the corner chairs above, against 209 lb for the whole 3-piece Auren set. Measure each doorway against each piece.

Do modular sectionals need assembly?

It varies. The Novilla listing describes a no-assembly design, while other listings do not say. Read the one you buy.
