Quick answer

A counter high bench is a backless bench with a seat about 24 to 26 inches high, made to tuck under a 36 inch kitchen counter or island. It seats more people per foot than stools, looks tidy when pushed in and is easier to store. The trade-offs are that it has no back, it is narrow, and a listing that says it seats two may mean two squeezed together. Before buying, check the seat height, the length, the depth and the weight rating.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a 33 inch counter height backless bench, a single swivel counter stool with a 26 inch seat and a pair of 24.8 inch counter stools with staggered footrests. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat on any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

For the matching tables, see counter height dining table with chairs and counter height dining room chairs. For standard-height benches, see dining benches and dining room table with bench.

Counter height

A counter is about 36 inches high. As our own planning estimate, not a standard, a seat about 10 to 12 inches below the top of the counter gives comfortable knee room, so a counter suggests a seat of about 24 to 26 inches.

The Boraam bench gives a seat height of 24.5 inches, which is inside that range. The Nathan James stool gives 26 inches and the VASAGLE stools give 24.8 inches. All three suit a 36 inch counter.

Length and how many sit

The Boraam bench is 33 inches long. The listing says it seats up to two guests comfortably. As our own estimate, allow about 24 inches of bench per adult, so 33 ÷ 24 ≈ 1.4 places. Two adults would each have about 16.5 inches, which is tight, so the claim suits two smaller people or children.

Stools take more counter edge but give everyone their own seat: the Nathan James stool is 16.8 inches wide and the VASAGLE stools are 19.5 inches wide.

Depth

Depth matters for a bench that tucks under a counter. The Boraam 75025 bench is 11.75 inches deep. A sibling listing in the same Sonoma collection, the Chestnut bench (model 75425), gives a depth of 9 inches and a height of 24.25 inches, so two finishes of the same bench show different depths. Ask which is right for the one you order.

A 9 to 12 inch seat is narrow, because your thighs are not fully supported.

Legroom under the counter

A counter needs an overhang, which is the part of the top that extends past the cabinets, so your knees fit under. The listings do not say how much overhang a bench or stool needs. A bench tucks in neatly, but without an overhang your knees will hit the cabinet.

As our own rough rule, plan for at least 12 inches of overhang for seated people, and measure yours. We did not find a standard for this in the sources we opened.

Backless comfort

A bench has no back. The Nathan James stool is also backless. The VASAGLE stools are described with a leather-look cover and staggered footrests that the seller says suit friends of all heights. Backless seats suit short stops such as breakfast or homework, not long meals.

Footrests

A counter seat lifts your feet off the floor, and footrests help. The VASAGLE stools have staggered footrests. The Boraam bench and the Nathan James stool do not describe footrests in the text we read. Without one, the seat edge can press your thighs.

Weight ratings

The Boraam bench is rated for 600 pounds. The Nathan James stool is rated for 275 pounds and the VASAGLE stools for 265 pounds. The figures are the sellers’ and we have not verified them.

Materials

The Boraam bench has an acacia wood frame with a wire-brushed finish and tapered legs. The Nathan James stool is solid wood with a swiveling seat. The VASAGLE stools have steel legs, a 3.1 inch thick molded foam seat and a water-resistant synthetic leather cover.

Wire-brushed wood hides scratches. Faux leather wipes clean.

The three listings we read

Boraam Sonoma Counter Height Backless Bench, barnwood wire-brush finish (model 75025). The listing gives 11.75 by 33 by 24.5 inches (D by W by H), a seat height of 24.5 inches, a listed weight of 17 pounds, a 600 pound maximum recommendation, an acacia wood frame, tapered legs, a seating capacity of 2 and simple assembly. Good for: a counter or island where a slim bench tucks under and seats two small people or children. Keep in mind: the bench is narrow, it has no back or footrest, and a sibling listing shows a 9 inch depth. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

Nathan James Amalia Backless Kitchen Counter Height Bar Stool, solid wood with 360 swivel seat (model 23401). The listing gives 17 by 16.8 by 25.7 inches, a seat height of 26 inches, a listed weight of 12 pounds, a 275 pound maximum recommendation, a solid wood frame, a swivel seat and 30-minute assembly. Good for: a single extra seat with a stated seat height. Keep in mind: it is one stool, not a pair, and it has no back or footrest. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

VASAGLE Bar Stools Set of 2, kitchen counter stools, 24.8 inch (model LBC080K01). The listing gives 19.5 by 19.5 by 24.8 inches, a seat height of 24.8 inches, a listed weight of 16.1 pounds, a 265 pound maximum recommendation, a 3.1 inch thick molded foam seat with a synthetic leather cover, splayed steel legs and staggered footrests. Good for: two padded counter seats with footrests. Keep in mind: the stools are 19.5 inches wide, so they take more counter edge than the bench. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. An island is 72 inches long with a 36 inch counter and a generous overhang.

Seat height. The targets are 24 to 26 inches. The Boraam’s 24.5 inches, the VASAGLE’s 24.8 inches and the Nathan James’s 26 inches all fit.

Benches. Two Boraam benches take 2 × 33 = 66 inches of the 72 inch edge, leaving 72 − 66 = 6 inches. The listing says each bench seats two, which would be four in total. By our estimate they seat about 2 × 1.4 = 2.8, so three adults at most.

Stools. Three Nathan James stools at 16.8 inches take 50.4 inches, leaving 21.6 inches. Three VASAGLE stools at 19.5 inches take 58.5 inches, leaving 13.5 inches. The 72 inch counter at 24 inches per adult holds 72 ÷ 24 = 3 people.

Weight. A 240 pound adult is under the Nathan James’s 275 pounds by 35 and the VASAGLE’s 265 by 25, and far under the bench’s 600.

The example shows that a bench saves counter edge only if everyone is small: for three adults, three stools win.

Red flags in listings

A bench that seats 2 at 33 inches, two finishes of one bench with different depths, a counter height label with no seat height and no mention of the overhang are signs to ask. Also check whether “counter height” means the seat or the overall bench.

Who should skip a counter bench

If adults will sit for long meals, stools with backs or a dining-height table are more comfortable. If your counter has no overhang, nothing will fit comfortably. If anyone has balance problems, a tall backless seat is risky. See counter height dining room chairs for seats with backs.

Frequently asked questions

What seat height is a counter high bench?

About 24 to 26 inches for a 36 inch counter, by our estimate. The bench we read gives 24.5 inches.

How many people sit on a 33 inch bench?

Two smaller adults or children. By our estimate of 24 inches per adult, one and a half.

Do counter benches have backs?

The ones we read are backless. A counter stool with a back is a different product.

Is a bench better than stools at a counter?

It tucks under neatly and is easy to store, but fits fewer adults comfortably than separate stools.

How much overhang does a counter need?

Enough for your knees. As our rough rule, at least 12 inches. Measure your counter.

Bottom line

Choose a counter high bench by seat height, length, depth and overhang, and compare it with stools before you commit. Of the three listings above, the Boraam is the 33 inch acacia bench that seats two small people, the Nathan James is the single swivel stool and the VASAGLE is the padded pair with footrests. Measure your counter’s overhang and edge length before you order.
