Quick answer
Dining chairs with arms are wider than armless chairs, so fewer fit along a table, and their arms have to clear the table apron if you want to tuck them under. Before buying, check three numbers: the chair width (to count how many fit), the arm height against your table’s apron (to see whether they tuck in) and the seat depth and weight rating. Arms give support for getting up but cost floor and table edge.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a set of 2 upholstered chairs with roll arms and tufted backs, a set of 2 bamboo and rattan armchairs and a set of 4 black metal chairs sold as arm chairs with a mesh-pattern back. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat in any of them. All numbers come from the listings.
For table and chair sets, see table with chair set and dining room table 6 chairs. For chairs in general, see dining chairs. For a bench as an alternative, see dining benches.
Why choose arms
Arms help people stand up and sit down, which matters for older guests or anyone with stiff knees. They also give a place to rest your forearms through a long meal, and a chair with arms often feels more like a lounge chair than a dining chair.
The costs are width and access. Arms add inches to each chair, so fewer chairs fit on a side of the table. They may also stop the chair from sliding fully under the table, which keeps the chair in the room when you want to walk by. Many households use armchairs at the two ends of a table and armless chairs on the long sides.
Count the chair width
As our own planning estimate, not a standard, allow about 24 inches of table edge per adult. The armchairs we read are narrower than that in seat width but wide overall. The StnTalk set is 19.7 inches wide, the Furlide bamboo chairs are 20.5 inches wide and the GIANTEX chairs are 22.5 inches wide.
On a 60 inch table, two GIANTEX chairs take 2 × 22.5 = 45 inches of a long side, leaving 60 − 45 = 15 inches. A third chair would need 3 × 22.5 = 67.5 inches, which is 7.5 inches more than the table has. So a 60 inch table seats two of these per side, and three only if the chairs can overlap under the edge.
Arms and the apron
The apron is the frame under the tabletop. To tuck a chair in, the arm height must be lower than the space under the apron. As our own rough example, a table that is 30 inches high with a 3 inch apron leaves 27 inches of clear height. An armrest that sits 26 inches off the floor would just clear it, and one at 28 inches would not.
None of the three listings states an armrest height, so you would ask the seller or measure a sample chair. That number decides whether the chair tucks under.
Seat height and depth
Seat height affects comfort at the table. The GIANTEX listing gives a seat height of 18 inches and a seat depth of 17.5 inches. The Furlide listing gives a seat height of 17.5 inches and a seat depth of 17.5 inches. The StnTalk listing gives a seat depth of 20 inches and no seat height.
As our own rough figure, a seat about 10 to 12 inches below the tabletop suits a table around 30 inches. An 18 inch seat leaves 30 − 18 = 12 inches, and 17.5 inches leaves 12.5 inches.
Weight ratings
The listings give: 265 pounds for the GIANTEX, 330 pounds for the Furlide and, for the StnTalk, a bullet that says 300 pounds while the specification table shows 44 pounds under the weight recommendation field, which is the chair weight and not a rating. Ratings are the sellers’ and we have not verified them.
If a listing shows two conflicting numbers, use the lower plausible one and ask the seller.
Materials and upholstery
The StnTalk armchairs use a solid wood internal frame, curved solid wood legs, cotton filling and chenille fabric with hand-folded diamond tufting. Chenille is soft but can catch on rough clothing and show spills. The Furlide chairs use a bamboo frame with hand-woven rattan, which the listing describes as breathable, and the listing says they can be used outdoors too. The GIANTEX chairs use powder-coated metal legs with a polyvinyl chloride seat, a foam fill and anti-slip foot pads.
If you want easy cleaning, a wipeable seat suits a dining chair better than tufted chenille.
Assembly
The StnTalk listing describes two quick steps: attach the tufted backrest to the seat cushion and secure four wooden legs. The Furlide listing describes detailed instructions for assembly. The GIANTEX listing describes a manual and complete hardware. Check the number of boxes if you want to assemble at once.
The three listings we read
StnTalk Upholstered Dining Chairs Set of 2 with Arms, grey high-back (model P346). The listing gives 24.4 by 19.7 by 37.4 inches (D by W by H), a seat depth of 20 inches, roll arms, diamond tufting, a cotton cushion, a solid wood frame with curved legs and chenille fabric. The bullet says it supports 300 pounds. Good for: a formal table where arms and a high back are wanted. Keep in mind: the weight recommendation field shows 44 pounds, which conflicts with the bullet, and the listing gives no armrest or seat height. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.
Furlide Rattan Dining Chairs Set of 2, bamboo armchairs in walnut. The listing gives 19.7 by 20.5 by 31.9 inches (D by W by H), a seat height of 17.5 inches, a seat depth of 17.5 inches, a backrest width of 17.3 inches, a bamboo frame with hand-woven rattan, an open back, a listed weight of 27 pounds and a 330 pound maximum recommendation. Good for: a small table where a lighter, open-back armchair is wanted. Keep in mind: the listing states no armrest height, and the seat is firm unless a cushion is added. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
GIANTEX Modern Dining Chairs Set of 4, black arm chair with 15 inch backrest (model GT10735DK-4-JV). The listing gives 21 by 22.5 by 34 inches, a seat height of 18 inches, a seat depth of 17.5 inches, a seat of 18.5 by 17.5 inches, a backrest 15 inches high, powder-coated metal legs with anti-slip foot pads and a 265 pound maximum recommendation. Good for: a set of four for a family table with wipeable seats. Keep in mind: a 22.5 inch width means only two fit on a short side of a small table, and the listing’s “arm chair” wording may describe the chair shape, so check the photos for arms. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. You have a rectangular table 72 inches long, 36 inches wide and 30 inches high with a 3 inch apron. You want six chairs: one at each end and two on each long side.
Width. Long side: two of the widest chairs here, the GIANTEX at 22.5 inches, take 45 inches, leaving 72 − 45 = 27 inches. The Furlide at 20.5 inches take 41 inches, leaving 31 inches. The StnTalk at 19.7 inches take 39.4 inches, leaving 32.6 inches.
Could you fit three per side? Three GIANTEX chairs need 67.5 inches, which is 72 − 67.5 = 4.5 inches under the table length, so the chairs would touch. Three StnTalk chairs need 59.1 inches and leave 12.9 inches, so they fit with room.
Clearance. The table’s clear height under the apron is 30 − 3 = 27 inches. An armrest below that tucks in. The listings give none, so measure before you buy.
Seat. A seat of 18 inches is 30 − 18 = 12 inches below the tabletop and a seat of 17.5 inches is 12.5 inches below, both near our 10 to 12 inch estimate.
Weight. A 250 pound adult is under the GIANTEX’s 265 pounds by 15 pounds, the Furlide’s 330 by 80 pounds and the StnTalk’s bullet figure of 300 by 50 pounds.
Red flags in listings
A weight recommendation that equals the chair weight, an “arm chair” title with photos that show no arms and no armrest height are signs to ask. Also check that a set of 2 is what you want, because a set of 4 or 6 may need two orders.
Who should skip armchairs at the dining table
If your table is under about 48 inches long, arms use too much of the edge. If you want chairs to tuck fully under so you can walk by, choose armless chairs or confirm the arm height. If the room is tight, see dining room table with bench for a space-saving layout.
Frequently asked questions
Do dining chairs with arms fit under a table?
Only if the armrest height is lower than the space under the apron. The listings we read give no armrest height, so ask or measure.
How wide are chairs with arms?
The ones we read are 19.7 to 22.5 inches wide overall.
How many chairs with arms fit on a 60 inch table side?
Two of the wider chairs here. A third would need about 67.5 inches at 22.5 inches each.
Should I use arms at the head of the table only?
Many households do. Armchairs at the ends and armless chairs along the sides save edge space.
What weight can dining armchairs hold?
The listings we read say 265 to 330 pounds, and one gives conflicting figures. The numbers are the sellers’ and we have not verified them.
Bottom line
Choose dining table chairs with arms by overall width, armrest height and seat size. Of the three listings above, the StnTalk is the formal tufted pair, the Furlide is the light open-back bamboo pair and the GIANTEX is the four-chair wipeable set that takes the most table edge. Measure your table apron and ask for the armrest height before ordering.
