Quick answer

A bed with couch is a seat by day and a bed at night, and it comes in three forms: a fold-out or boneless loveseat, a split-back loveseat that reclines flat, and a daybed with a trundle. Pick the form by two numbers: the sleep length against your height, and the floor it needs when open. Our planning rule is to choose a deck at least 6 inches longer than the tallest person who will sleep on it. That is a rule of thumb, not a standard.

Three of the four pieces we looked at fall short of that for a 70 inch (5 ft 10 in) adult. Only one, at 82 inches long, clears it. Sizes come from Amazon listings read on 2026-09-30, and we have not tested any of these products. If you would sleep there most nights, a real bed is a better answer; see platform bed frame.

Three kinds of bed with couch

Fold-out or boneless loveseat. The seat folds forward or unrolls into a flat deck. It is light and needs no frame, but the deck is foam, often about 5 inches thick, and the back has no rigid support. Good for occasional guests and kids.

Split-back loveseat. One back or two halves tilt flat on a frame, so the bed is about the same footprint as the sofa plus a little depth. It sits higher and firmer, with a frame that needs assembly.

Daybed with trundle. A twin-size frame that looks like a couch with a back and arms, with a second twin bed rolling out underneath. It sleeps two, but it is a bed frame first, and you add your own mattresses.

For broader sofa-bed coverage see sofa beds for small spaces and best sleeper sofas; for daybeds see best daybeds.

The sleep-length check

Put the deck length next to the tallest sleeper. The U.S. mattress sizes from Amerisleep’s chart are a useful yardstick: twin 38 x 75 in, twin XL 38 x 80 in, full 54 x 75 in, queen 60 x 80 in. Futon mattresses follow the same pattern, according to Banner Mattress: twin 39 x 75, full 54 x 75, queen 60 x 80.

Worked example, using a 70 inch adult and our 6 inch margin:

Piece (listing)Deck lengthMargin over 70 inMeets 6 in?
Split-back loveseat (Amazon Basics convertible)71.5 in1.5 inNo
Boneless futon sofa (COMAX 59 inch)71 in1 inNo
Twin mattress on a daybed75 in5 inNo, by 1 in
Boneless loveseat (MeMoreCool 58 inch)82 in12 inYes

The arithmetic is deck length minus 70, then compared with 6. For a 64 inch (5 ft 4 in) guest the first two pass, because 71.5 − 64 = 7.5 and 71 − 64 = 7. Ask who will really use it before you buy.

The open-footprint check

Next measure what the bed needs once it is open. Amerisleep recommends leaving at least 24 inches of clearance around a bed for comfortable movement, and the U.S. Access Board uses 36 inches as the minimum width for an accessible route. Use 24 inches for one side you step out to and 36 inches for the main path.

Worked example in a 10 by 12 ft room (120 by 144 in) with the sofa back on a 144 inch wall, assuming the open length runs out from the wall:

  • MeMoreCool: 120 − 82 = 38 in left at the foot. That clears a 36 inch path by 2 inches.
  • COMAX: 120 − 71 = 49 in left.
  • Amazon Basics split-back: the bed lists 71.5 x 42 in, so it only extends 42 in out; 120 − 42 = 78 in left.

The daybed is different because the trundle pulls out sideways. Banner Mattress puts a pulled-out twin trundle at roughly 75 x 76 inches of floor, with at least 24 inches around it. The Amazon Basics frame lists 77.3 inches long, so allow a little more than Banner’s figure. In the same 120 x 144 room, 144 − 76 = 68 in remains on the long side, enough for a 24 inch side path and a 36 inch main path (24 + 36 = 60), with 8 inches spare.

Four listings read on 2026-09-30

MeMoreCool 58″ Boneless Loveseat Sofa Bed, Corduroy Pull Out. The bullets say it measures 57.3 x 31.9 x 25.6 in as a sofa and opens to an 82 x 43.3 in deck over 5 inches of foam. It needs no assembly, weighs 45 lb, lists a 400 lb maximum and should be placed with its back flush against a wall. Good for the longest sleeper of the group. Keep in mind: the table lists a 9.88 in seat depth, which looks inconsistent with a 31.9 in sofa depth, so confirm how deep the seat is before relying on it.

COMAX Boneless Futon Sofa Bed, 59″ Small Low-Profile Floor Couch, Black. It is 59.1 x 35.4 in with an 11.8 in seat height and unfolds to 59 x 71 in. The bullets call it “full-size”, but the deck is 4 inches shorter than the 75 inch full mattress in Amerisleep’s chart. It ships vacuum-packed and needs 24 to 72 hours to expand, and it weighs 39.7 lb. Good for kids, dorms and movie corners. Keep in mind: the 11.8 inch seat is 5 to 7 inches below the 17 to 19 inch seat the listing itself cites for a standard boneless couch, so getting up is harder.

Amazon Basics Twin Daybed and Trundle Bed Frame Set, Black. The title gives 77.3 x 40 x 35.4 in, the frame is steel, and it takes one twin mattress on the daybed and one twin mattress up to 8 inches thick on the trundle. The listing says assembly is required with tools included, and the product table shows 65.3 lb. Good for two sleepers in one footprint. Keep in mind: nothing we read says a mattress is included, so budget a second item; Banner Mattress says most trundle frames suit mattresses of 6 to 8 inches.

Amazon Basics Convertible Loveseat Sofa Bed. The bullets list 71.5 x 33.5 x 32 in as a sofa and 71.5 x 42 x 17 in as a bed, with a 600 lb weight capacity and a 70.4 lb product weight. The table lists a 19.5 in seat depth. Good for a small room because the bed is only 8.5 inches deeper than the sofa. Keep in mind: the 71.5 inch deck is 3.5 inches shorter than a twin mattress; for a longer option see sofa bedroom.

Which form suits which life

  • Sleeping there one or two nights a month: a boneless loveseat is the lightest answer, and you can store it upright.
  • Hosting guests every few weeks: a split-back loveseat or the daybed is steadier because it has a frame.
  • Two sleepers at once: only the daybed with a trundle is built for it in this group.
  • A living room that must stay tidy: check how long the conversion takes, how much bedding you need to hide, and whether the open bed blocks a door.
  • Nightly use: choose a real bed. A 5 inch foam deck sits at the thin end of the 5 to 12 inch range Banner Mattress gives for futon mattresses.

If none of these fit, a Murphy bed gives a full mattress but is a far bigger commitment than a couch.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Reading only the sofa dimensions. The open size is the one that decides whether the door still opens.
  • Assuming “full” means 54 x 75. Two of the decks above are shorter than a full mattress.
  • Forgetting bedding. Sheets and blankets need a spot that does not block the conversion.
  • Ignoring delivery. A boneless piece needs time to expand, and a steel frame arrives in parts. Measure the route as in sofas and sectionals.

Bottom line

Start with the tallest sleeper and the room depth. If the deck is 6 or more inches longer than the sleeper and the foot of the bed leaves at least 36 inches, the piece is worth a closer look. If either number fails, pick a longer deck or a different kind of bed.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a sofa bed be for an adult?

A common planning habit is to add about 6 inches to the tallest sleeper’s height. That is our own rule of thumb. By it, a 70 inch adult needs a deck of about 76 inches, which only the 82 inch deck above provides.

How much floor space do I need when a bed with couch is open?

Keep at least 24 inches around a bed, as Amerisleep advises, and 36 inches on the main route if you want a wide path. Subtract the open length from the room depth to see what remains.

Can I use a regular mattress on a daybed with trundle?

The Amazon Basics listing says the daybed takes a twin mattress and the trundle takes a twin mattress up to 8 inches thick. A thick mattress may not fit under the frame, so check the listing before you buy one.

Is a boneless couch comfortable as a bed?

The listings above describe foam decks of about 5 inches, and none say they are designed for nightly sleep. They are fine for naps and guests; for regular use, look at a frame-based piece.

How long does a boneless couch take to expand?

The COMAX listing says to allow 24 to 72 hours after unboxing before daily use. Other listings did not state a time, so read the one you buy.
