What a semi circle sofa is

It is a curved sectional in a boucle or chenille fabric, usually in modules that you can set in an arc, in a half circle, in two facing groups or in a full ring. The listings call them half round sofas, conversation pit sofas, round sectionals and bubble couches. The seats face each other across the curve, which suits talking, and the backs face outward.

Because the seating faces inward, the middle of the curve is empty, and you can put a round table or a rug there. That empty middle is part of the floor the sofa uses.

Sizing example: floor space in a 14 by 16 ft room

A 14 by 16 ft room is 168 x 192 inches, or 32,256 sq in. This room is an example we chose, not a standard. Take each listing’s overall width and depth as a bounding box.

The arithmetic is 141 x 70 = 9,870, divided by 32,256 gives 0.306; 151 x 62.2 = 9,392, giving 0.291; 127.98 x 65 = 8,319, giving 0.258; and 97.99 x 37.99 = 3,723, giving 0.115. The half round listing’s table prints 78 inches of depth while its title and bullet say 141 by 70, so we used the title. The boxes overstate a curve, because the inside of the arc is empty.

For the full ring, the 151 inch set says it spans approximately 151 inches in diameter when fully assembled. A circle of diameter 151 has a radius of 75.5 inches and an area of 3.1416 x 75.5 x 75.5 = 17,908 sq in. That is 17,908 / 32,256 = 0.555, or 55.5 percent of the room, which is 124 sq ft of a 224 sq ft room. A full ring is a room-sized decision.

How much of the room is left

OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways. In the example room, a 151 inch ring leaves 168 − 151 = 17 inches on the short side, which is under the walkway guideline, so a full ring does not fit a 14 foot wide room with a path around it. A half arc of 62.2 inches deep leaves 168 − 62.2 = 105.8 inches, which is ample. The ring needs a room at least 151 + 2 x 30 = 211 inches wide to keep a 30 inch path on both sides, which is about 17.6 ft. That arithmetic uses the listing’s diameter.

Seat depth and height

POVISON’s sofa-comfort guide says most sofas have a seat depth of about 21 to 24 inches and a seat height of about 17 to 19 inches. The listings give these seat numbers.

The three deeper seats are 1 to 2.57 inches above the top of the range (25 − 24 = 1; 26.57 − 24 = 2.57), which suits sitting with your legs up, and the seat heights are 0.02 to 0.67 inches under the bottom of it (17 − 16.33 = 0.67). These are near the standard, and the deep seats are for lounging. The olive green listing’s bullet says 24 inch depth, which matches its 23.36 table.

Load, cartons and doors

The half round and the round sectional list a weight limit of 1,200 lb, the curved L 900 lb and the olive green 800 lb. The curved L says it ships in 2 cartons, and the listing says it needs no assembly but should be unpacked only when it is in use. The curved L and the olive green list a minimum required door width of 30 inches, which is below the 32 inches that the U.S. Access Board uses as a minimum clear width at doorways. Furniture Academy says the entryway has to be wider than at least one of a piece’s depth, height or diagonal depth, so measure each module.

The round sectional is built from 4 modules, and the half round from modules that the listing says can form one semicircle or two loveseats. Modules are easier through a door than a whole arc.

Fabric: boucle and chenille

Three of the four are boucle, a looped fabric, and the olive green is chenille. The listings call the boucle skin-friendly and pilling-proof, and the olive green’s bullets say stain-resistant and waterproof. Those are seller claims we have not tested. Cream white boucle shows marks and loops can catch claws, which is a general observation and not a listing claim.

The listing gives 141 W x 70 D x 32 H in (title) and 78 x 141 x 30 in (table), a seat depth of 25 in, a seat height of 16.53 in and a listed weight limit of 1,200 pounds. The bullets describe two curved loveseats that join into a semicircle, a sturdy wood frame and throw pillows. Good if you want the half circle with a stated load. Keep in mind: the depth is 70 or 78 inches depending on where you read.

Modern Round Sectional Sofa for Living Room, Cream-White Boucle, Oversized Rearrangeable Sofa (B0FB162RJ5). The table gives 62.2 x 151 x 30 in, a seat depth of 25 in, a seat height of 16.53 in and seating for 6, with a 1,200 lb limit. The bullets describe 4 modules that form a full circle of about 151 inches, a half round or two facing groups. Good if you want the flexible ring. Keep in mind: the ring needs a very large room.

The table gives 65 x 127.98 x 26 in, a seat depth of 26.57 in, a seat height of 16.33 in, a 900 lb limit and a minimum door width of 30 in. The bullets describe round chaise lounges, no assembly and delivery in 2 cartons. Good for an L-shaped curve. Keep in mind: it is left chaise facing only.

Modern Curved Loveseat Sofa, Semicircle Conversation Sofa Pit, Olive Green Chenille (B0DQ6Q6S7N). The table gives 37.99 x 97.99 x 25.6 in, a seat depth of 23.36 in, a seat height of 16.98 in and an 800 lb limit. The bullets describe a two-piece curved loveseat in chenille with four throw pillows. Good for the smallest footprint at 11.5 percent of the example room. Keep in mind: its seat back interior height is 9.39 inches, which is low.

How to choose

1. Measure the room and compute the box area and the leftover walkway.
2. Decide whether you want a half arc or a full ring, and check the ring’s diameter against the room.
3. Check the seat depth and height against 21 to 24 and 17 to 19 inches.
4. Check the cartons, the modules and the door width.
5. Pick boucle or chenille by how you live.

You may not need a full circle. A single curved sofa or an L-shaped curve gives the shape with far less floor, and a standard sofa leaves more room for a path; see curved sofa.

• Reading the box area as the real floor use.
• Trusting a depth that the title and table give differently.

A semicircle is one shape. Sellers also list full circles, single round sofas and round floor loungers under nearly the same search terms, and they need very different amounts of floor. A true circle of 63 x 63 in with a seat depth of 24 in and a seat height of 18 in. The spec lists a mortise-and-tenon frame joint with reinforced corner blocks, and the bullets describe a solid wood frame with a rattan-style back panel. Keep in mind: assembly is required, and the upholstery color field reads “Not Specified”.

BBTJOINT 128 in Curved Sectional Sofa (B0DQDSLKJ1)

A semicircle of 64 x 128 x 26 in with a listed seat depth of 34.2 in and a minimum door width of 30 in. Keep in mind: two capacity fields look odd (1,200 lb maximum and 211 lb minimum), the spec lists a reclining seat count of 3 although the bullets describe no recline, and the title calls it a left-hand-facing chaise, so check which way the curve faces.

EcoSummer Oversized Round Lounge Chaise (B0HBQ42FL9)

A low floor lounger, 55.12 x 55.12 x 23.62 in, with no frame, back or arms. It is not a sofa. Keep in mind: the shape field reads “Rectangular” although the product is round, and the listed seat depth of 65 in is larger than the item itself.

Sizing example: the floor a full circle needs

A good rule of thumb, not a published standard, is to leave about 30 in of walking space around a piece that stands in the middle of a room.

• A full circle about 151 in across needs 151 + 30 + 30 = 211 in of clear floor each way, about 17.6 ft (211 divided by 12).
• The EDLME at 63 in across needs 63 + 60 = 123 in, about 10.25 ft.
• The EcoSummer at 55.12 in across needs 55.12 + 60 = 115.12 in, about 9.6 ft.

Bottom line

Decide the arc before the fabric. Of the four, the olive green loveseat is the small curve at 11.5 percent of the room, the curved L is the 128 inch corner, the half round is the 141 inch arc with a stated 1,200 lb load, and the 151 inch round sectional is the one that becomes a ring taking 55.5 percent of the floor. Ask the seller for the depth and the module sizes before you order.
