Quick answer

Counter height bar stools are stools for a counter about 36 inches high, with seats about 24 to 26 inches tall. A bar height stool is taller, about 29 to 31 inches, for a 40 to 42 inch bar. What decides the fit is the gap between the seat and the counter, not the label. We use roughly 10 to 12 inches as a rule of thumb for that gap.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-10-01: the FLYZC 26 inch swivel counter stools with solid wood backs (ASIN B0GGR5JGHN), the Norphalex backless 26 inch saddle counter stools (B0GVMD2CYV) and the VASAGLE EKHO 24.8 inch counter stools (B0C7G6DDQL). They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat on any of them, and we do not show prices; check the current price on Amazon. Every number comes from the listings.

Measure your counter first

A standard kitchen counter is often about 36 inches high, but yours may be 34 to 38. Measure from the floor to the top of the counter. The Norphalex listing says its 26 inch seat is designed for counters and islands 34 to 40 inches, which is the seller’s claim and a wider range than most advice.

Then measure the overhang: how far the counter top sticks out over the base. A stool with a tall back or a wide base may not tuck in if the overhang is small.

The gap, with numbers from the listings

Sizing example with sample numbers. Your counter is 36 inches high. The VASAGLE stool has a seat height of 24.8 inches, so the gap is 36 − 24.8 = 11.2 inches. The Norphalex has a 26 inch seat, a gap of 10 inches. The FLYZC lists a seat height of 26.5 inches, a gap of 9.5 inches.

As a rule of thumb, the range of 10 to 12 inches suits most adults. The VASAGLE at 11.2 is in the middle, the Norphalex at 10 is at the tight end and the FLYZC at 9.5 is a little tight, so a taller person may find their thighs touching the counter. If your counter is 34 inches, the gaps are 9.2, 8 and 7.5 inches, which is too tight for most people, and the VASAGLE is the better fit. If your counter is 38 inches, the gaps grow to 13.2, 12 and 11.5 inches, and the larger stools fit better.

The FLYZC listing shows seat heights for several variants in its table (from 24.5 to 26.5 inches), so check the one you order.

Back, swivel or saddle

The FLYZC stool has a curved solid wood backrest, a faux leather upholstered seat and a ball-bearing 360 degree swivel. The Norphalex stool is a backless saddle seat with a 3.1 inch thick foam seat. The VASAGLE stool has a synthetic leather seat on a 3.1 inch thick molded foam, with unique staggered footrests.

A back is better for a long breakfast. A swivel is convenient in a kitchen but can twist under a child. A saddle seat is comfortable for a short sit and tucks under the counter easily. Backless stools take less visual space, and a back adds height, which the FLYZC listing shows with an overall height of 37 inches.

Footprint and weight

The FLYZC stool is 20.87 by 20.87 inches and 37 inches high overall, and weighs 37.7 pounds, which may be for the set. The VASAGLE stool is 19.5 by 19.5 inches and weighs 16.1 pounds. The Norphalex stool is 13.8 by 17.3 inches, a much smaller footprint.

The footprints are about 436 square inches for the FLYZC, 380 for the VASAGLE and 239 for the Norphalex. As a rule of thumb, allow about 24 inches of counter length per stool; a 72 inch island fits 3 stools by that rule. A stool with a 20 to 21 inch footprint takes most of that, while the 17.3 inch Norphalex leaves more room between stools.

Weight ratings

The FLYZC lists a maximum weight recommendation of 350 pounds. The Norphalex lists 300 pounds. The VASAGLE lists 265 pounds as a maximum static load capacity (its comparison table shows 265 for most versions and 300 for one).

Sizing example. A 220 pound adult on a 265 pound rating has 45 pounds of headroom, which is 45 ÷ 265 ≈ 17 percent. On a 350 pound rating the headroom is 130 pounds, about 37 percent. A static rating is for weight at rest, and sitting down hard adds load, so a bigger margin is better. A seller’s rating is not verified by us.

Seat and padding

The Norphalex and VASAGLE stools each have a 3.1 inch thick foam seat. The Norphalex uses sponge and PU leather. The VASAGLE uses 58D molded foam and synthetic leather, with a water-resistant cover that wipes clean. The FLYZC uses a faux leather upholstered seat.

PU and faux leather wipe clean and can crack with age. A thick seat is soft and compresses over time, which is a general property and not a figure from the listings.

Floor protection and stability

The Norphalex listing mentions adjustable leveling foot pads that are non-slip and scratch resistant, with an X-shaped metal frame. The VASAGLE listing mentions splayed metal legs with swivel leveling feet. The FLYZC listing mentions a metal footrest with an adjustable footpad.

Leveling feet help on uneven floors. If your floor is a soft wood, felt pads add protection.

The three listings we read

FLYZC Counter Height Bar Stools Set of 2, 26″ Swivel Barstools with Solid Wood Backrest (ASIN B0GGR5JGHN). The listing gives 20.87 by 20.87 by 37 inches, a seat height of 26.5 inches, a 350 pound rating, a weight of 37.7 pounds, a swivel and a solid wood back. Good for: a back, a swivel and the highest rating. Keep in mind: the seat height is the tallest and gives the tightest gap. The page showed an Add to Cart button.

Norphalex Counter Height Bar Stools Set of 2, Backless 26″ Saddle Barstools, Walnut (ASIN B0GVMD2CYV). The listing gives 13.8 by 17.3 by 26 inches, a 26 inch seat for counters 34 to 40 inches, a 3.1 inch foam seat, an X-shaped frame, leveling feet and a 300 pound rating. Good for: the smallest footprint. Keep in mind: no back. The page showed an Add to Cart button.

VASAGLE Bar Stools Set of 2, Kitchen Counter Stools, 24.8-Inch Tall (ASIN B0C7G6DDQL). The listing gives 19.5 by 19.5 by 24.8 inches, a seat height of 24.8 inches, a weight of 16.1 pounds, a 265 pound static load, a 3.1 inch molded foam seat and staggered footrests. Good for: the lowest seat for a standard counter. Keep in mind: the lowest rating. The page showed an Add to Cart button.

Knee room and overhang

A stool’s seat-to-counter gap is only part of the fit. Check the overhang, which is how far the counter top extends past the cabinets below it. If the overhang is short, say 6 inches, your knees will hit the cabinet face before you reach the counter, and a stool with a thick back or a wide base will sit far out from the counter. A deeper overhang of 12 inches or more lets you tuck in comfortably. The listings do not know your counter, so measure it.

Also check the stool’s depth against how far you want it to stick out into the walkway when someone is sitting. A 20 inch deep stool pulled up to a counter still leaves most of its body in the room, and the person’s knees and feet add several inches more. If the walkway behind the stools is narrow, backless saddle seats that slide fully under the counter keep the space clearer. As a rule of thumb, leave at least 30 to 36 inches between the back of a seated person and the next obstacle so people can pass, and treat that as a rule of thumb, not a standard.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not rely on “counter height” without the number. Do not forget the gap. Do not buy a tall back if the overhang is tight. And do not assume a set weight is per stool.

Who should skip these stools

If your counter is a 42 inch bar, you need taller stools. If you have small children, a swivel seat may spin. If you want stools that tuck away, a backless saddle suits better than a back.

Frequently asked questions

What seat height is counter height?

About 24 to 26 inches for a 36 inch counter. The three we read are 24.8, 26 and 26.5 inches.

How much gap should I leave?

Our estimate is about 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the counter top, not a published standard.

Counter height or bar height?

Counter height is for about a 36 inch counter and bar height for about a 40 to 42 inch bar.

How much weight can they hold?

The listings say 350, 300 and 265 pounds. Those are the sellers’ figures.

Should I get a back?

For longer sitting, yes. For tucking under, a backless saddle is easier.

What to do if your kitchen has both counter and bar heights

The gap rule above, roughly 10 to 12 inches between seat and surface, applies separately to each height zone in a kitchen that has both a standard counter and a raised bar section, which is common in kitchens with an island or peninsula. Buying one style of stool for a mixed-height space means one end sits correctly while the other does not, so measure each surface independently rather than assuming a single stool height works for both. If the household regularly uses both zones, two different stool heights, chosen separately by the rule above, generally beats trying to compromise with one in-between height that fits neither surface well.

Bottom line

Choose counter height bar stools by measuring your counter, then checking seat height and the gap. Of the three listings, the VASAGLE is the 24.8 inch stool with the roomiest gap, the Norphalex is the backless 26 inch saddle stool with the smallest footprint and the FLYZC is the swivel stool with a back and the highest rating. Measure your counter first.
