Quick answer

A saddle chair is a rolling stool with a saddle-shaped seat, and sellers market it to dentists, hygienists, estheticians and technicians. A listing that names dental use is a marketing description, not a certification; none of the three pages we read gives a medical-device or dental-equipment standard. If you are choosing one for close work, check the seat height range (the table value and the bullet often disagree), the seat width, the base width and casters, the wipeable cover and the weight rating.

This article is general information about buying a product, not professional or medical advice. We make no claim that any saddle chair improves posture or prevents pain. If you work long hours and have pain, speak with a clinician or an occupational health professional.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a saddle chair with an adjustable backrest sold for dental hygienists and similar work, a stool with a height-adjustable footrest ring and a taller stool with a detachable backrest. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or used any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

What the listings say about dental use

The DR.LOMILOMI listing says it is ideal for dentists, dental hygienists, massage therapists, estheticians, tattoo artists, beauty salons, medical clinics and laboratories. The Brick Attic listing names offices, spas, studios, labs, counters and salons. The YJHome listing names offices, shops, vanities, bars and medical settings.

These are uses the sellers suggest. We did not find a statement that any of these chairs meets a clinical standard, so if your workplace has rules for furniture, check them.

Seat height range

For close work, the seat height range matters more than any other number, and these listings contradict themselves.

The DR.LOMILOMI listing gives 25 inches in its table and 21 to 26 inches in a bullet. The YJHome listing gives 26 inches in its table and 20 to 24 inches in a bullet. The Brick Attic listing gives 29.15 inches in its table and a height range of 33.86 to 41.75 inches in a bullet, which is a taller drafting range.

Use the bullet ranges as stated ranges, and ask which numbers describe the seat. A table value is one point and not the range.

Seat width and depth

The YJHome seat is 16 inches wide. The Brick Attic seat is 15.8 inches wide. The DR.LOMILOMI listing gives a seat depth of 15 inches. These are small seats, which suit close work but leave little room for larger users.

A saddle seat should fit the hips without squeezing. If you are broad, ask for the seat width.

Backrest

The saddle chairs in this article include a backrest, which a plain saddle stool lacks. The DR.LOMILOMI black listing gives a seat back interior height of 12.5 inches and a backrest width of 22.5 inches, while the tan version of the same model gives a backrest width of 15 inches. The two variants disagree. The YJHome listing says the back height and tilt adjust. The Brick Attic listing says the PU leather backrest is detachable.

A detachable back lets you remove it for tasks that need open movement. An adjustable tilt lets you change the support.

Footrest and base

A saddle chair raises you off the floor, so a footrest matters. The YJHome listing has a height-adjustable footrest ring and a five-pronged base. The Brick Attic listing has a footrest ring and a 23.6 inch five-star base. The DR.LOMILOMI listing has a reinforced aluminum five-leg base and no footrest in the text we read.

A wide base steadies the chair but takes floor; the Brick Attic base is 23.6 inches across.

Casters and floors

Close work often happens on hard flooring. The DR.LOMILOMI listing describes polyurethane casters that roll smoothly on hard floors and reduce noise. The YJHome and Brick Attic listings describe casters without detail. Check the casters against your floor and ask whether they lock.

Cover and cleaning

The DR.LOMILOMI chair has a polyurethane vinyl cover over memory foam, and the listing describes it as easy to wipe clean. The Brick Attic chair has PU leather over memory foam. A wipeable cover is useful where hygiene matters, though the listings do not describe any disinfectant resistance, and we cannot say how the cover wears with cleaners.

Weight ratings

The DR.LOMILOMI listing gives 400 pounds. The YJHome listing gives 551.2 pounds in its table and 400 pounds in a bullet. The Brick Attic listing gives 300 pounds. The figures are the sellers’ and we have not verified them. If a listing gives two numbers, use the lower.

The three listings we read

DR.LOMILOMI Rolling Saddle Chair with Back Support, ergonomic swivel stool, black (model 510, KOA). The listing gives 23 by 23 by 37 inches, a seat height of 25 inches in the table and a range of 21 to 26 inches in a bullet, a seat depth of 15 inches, a seat back interior height of 12.5 inches, a backrest width of 22.5 inches, a listed weight of 23.3 pounds, a 400 pound maximum recommendation, a memory foam seat with a vinyl cover and a five-leg aluminum base. Good for: close work at a counter-height surface. Keep in mind: the back dimensions differ between color variants, and no footrest is listed. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

YJHome Rolling Stool with Back Support, swivel chair adjustable height (model PM298). The listing gives a seat height of 26 inches in the table and 20 to 24 inches in a bullet, a seat width of 16 inches, a listed weight of 17 pounds, a height-adjustable footrest ring, an adjustable backrest, a five-pronged base and weight ratings of 551.2 pounds (table) and 400 pounds (bullet). Good for: someone who wants a footrest ring and a lower stated range. Keep in mind: the size field shows 6 by 6 by 2 inches, which is not the chair, and the ratings conflict. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

Brick Attic Drafting Chair with Backrest, adjustable foot rest rolling stool with wheels, PU leather (model T12). The listing gives 23.6 by 23.6 by 41.75 inches, a seat width of 15.8 inches, a height range of 33.86 to 41.75 inches in a bullet, a listed weight of 20.4 pounds, a 300 pound maximum recommendation, a detachable backrest and a foot ring. Good for: a tall counter or drafting surface. Keep in mind: its lowest height of 33.86 inches is far above the other two, and the table shows 29.15 inches. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. You have two surfaces: a 30 inch workbench and a 36 inch counter. Using our planning estimate of a seat 10 to 12 inches below the surface, the targets are about 18 to 20 inches and 24 to 26 inches.

36 inch counter (24 to 26 inches). The DR.LOMILOMI range of 21 to 26 inches covers it. The YJHome range of 20 to 24 inches reaches only 24 inches, the bottom of the target. The Brick Attic’s lowest height of 33.86 inches is 33.86 − 26 = 7.86 inches above the top of the target.

30 inch bench (18 to 20 inches). The YJHome’s lowest height of 20 inches reaches the top of the target. The DR.LOMILOMI’s 21 inches is 1 inch above it. The Brick Attic is far too high.

Weight. A 420 pound user is over the YJHome’s 400 pound figure by 20 pounds but under its 551.2 pound figure by 131.2 pounds, so the conflicting listing leaves the answer open. The DR.LOMILOMI’s 400 is 20 pounds under the user’s weight.

The example shows how the stated range, not the table value, decides which chair serves which surface.

Red flags in listings

A height in the table that differs from the range in the bullets, two weight ratings on one page, a size field that is not the chair and a backrest that differs between color variants are signs to ask. Also watch for words such as “orthopedic” or “relieves pain” with no source.

Who should skip a saddle chair

If you need strong, adjustable lumbar support for long hours, a full chair may suit you better; see best ergonomic office chairs. If your surface is below about 30 inches, these stools may not go low enough. If you have a hip or balance condition, ask a clinician before using a saddle seat.

Frequently asked questions

Are saddle chairs approved for dental use?

The listings we read market them for dental and clinic use, but none gives a standard or certification. Check your workplace rules.

What seat height should I look for?

One that puts your seat about 10 to 12 inches below your working surface, by our estimate. Use the stated range, not the table value.

Do saddle chairs come with backs?

Some do. The ones here have backrests that adjust or detach.

Can I use a saddle chair on a hard floor?

Check the casters. One listing we read describes polyurethane casters for hard floors.

Will a saddle chair fix back pain?

A chair is not a treatment. If pain is persistent, speak with a clinician.

Bottom line

Choose a saddle chair for dental or similar work by the stated height range, seat width, base and cover, and treat the dental label as marketing. Of the three listings above, the DR.LOMILOMI covers a counter with a 21 to 26 inch range, the YJHome has the lower range and conflicting ratings and the Brick Attic is a tall drafting stool. Ask the seller which height numbers describe the seat before ordering.
