Quick answer

A modular sofa is built from separate units that you can join in different shapes, so the useful numbers are the assembled footprint and the size of the largest single piece. The three listings we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01 show why you must check: one lists its depth in the width field, one copies a different size into its bullets, and one gives a 20 inch depth for a sofa described as a sectional with a chaise. Where the numbers agree, the assembled footprints are 2,685 and 3,875 sq in, which is 15.5 and 22.4 percent of a 10 by 12 ft room.

We have not tested these sofas. Every size and material is the seller’s number, and we flag contradictions rather than choosing between them. For a longer comparison of sectional types, see modular sectional couches; for the bigger sofa-versus-sectional decision, see sofas and sectionals.

What modular means in a listing

A modular sofa is made of units, such as a chaise, a corner and a seat, that attach to each other. Some use a frame and connectors. The three below are boneless foam modules held together by straps, with no frame to assemble. That makes them light and easy to carry, and it also means the pieces can shift if the straps loosen or the floor is slippery. The 68 inch mini listing says secure fastening straps connect its modules and prevent shifting, which is a seller claim.

The same word covers a very small mini couch and a six-seat sectional, so it tells you the construction and nothing about the size.

The size fields cannot be trusted blindly

Modular listings are often sold in several sizes under one page, and the fields carry the wrong values. Here is what we saw.

ListingTable dimensionsWhat looks wrong
79 in black L-shape78.74 D x 49.21 W x 22.04 Hdepth and width look swapped; the seat depth field reads 49.21 in
65 in mini L, left chaise64.96 D x 41.33 W x 18.89 Hdepth and width look swapped; the bullets say 65 L by 42 W
68 in mini modular20 D x 68 W x 19 H20 in cannot be the depth of a sofa with a chaise

On the first row the bullets say the mini sofa is 65 inches by 42 inches, while the table says 79 inches, so the page mixes two sizes. When the sizes of one listing disagree, do not guess. Ask the seller, or read the size name in the title and treat the table as secondary. The title says 79 inches, so we treat the 78.74 inch figure as the long side.

Worked example: the assembled footprint

Take the long side times the short side. A 10 by 12 ft room is 120 x 144 in, or 17,280 sq in. This room is an example we chose, not a standard.

ListingLong x shortFootprintShare of the room
79 in black L-shape78.74 x 49.21 in3,875 sq in22.4%
65 in mini L, left chaise64.96 x 41.33 in2,685 sq in15.5%

Check the arithmetic: 78.74 x 49.21 = 3,875 sq in, divided by 17,280 is 0.224. And 64.96 x 41.33 = 2,685 sq in, divided by 17,280 is 0.155. We left the 68 inch mini out of the table because its listed depth is not usable; a sofa 68 inches wide and 20 inches deep would be 1,360 sq in, but that is a module or a data error, not the finished shape.

The boxes overstate an L, because the corner notch is empty. Use the share as an upper bound.

Check the walkway

OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways and 14 to 18 inches between a sofa and a coffee table. On a 12 ft (144 in) wall, the 79 inch sofa leaves 144 − 78.74 = 65.3 inches of wall, and the 65 inch sofa leaves 144 − 64.96 = 79 inches. Either leaves room for a side table. The chaise depth is what eats the floor, so place it along the longer direction of the room if you can.

Weight and moving

Modular foam sofas are light: 71.8 lb for the 79 inch, 39.7 lb for the 65 inch and 38 lb for the 68 inch mini. You can lift a piece alone, which helps on stairs, and none of the three says how the weight splits between pieces. Furniture Academy says the opening must be wider than at least one of a piece’s depth, height or diagonal depth, so measure each module rather than the assembled sofa. The U.S. Access Board uses 32 inches as a minimum clear width at doorways, a safe worst case. Boneless foam sofas are usually shipped compressed, so unpack them a day or two before you need them and check the seller’s expansion note; we did not read one on every page.

Three modular sofas read on 2026-10-01

79″ L-Shaped Couches for Living Room, Cloud Sectional Couch, Boneless Couch with Deep Seat Left Facing Chaise (B0H25ZCSBV). The table gives 78.74 x 49.21 x 22.04 in, 71.8 lb, a seat height of 14.2 in, seating for four and corduroy over foam. The bullets describe a chaise you can flip to the left or right and a low-profile design. It needs no assembly. Good if you want the biggest of the three. Keep in mind: the page mixes a 65 inch description with a 79 inch table, and the seat depth field equals the overall width.

65″ L Shaped Couch for Small Spaces, No Assembly Cloud Sectional Sofa with Deep Seat, Left Facing Chaise, 5-in-1 Modular 3 Seater Corduroy Couch (B0GWZJHMBZ). The table gives 64.96 x 41.33 x 18.89 in, 39.7 lb, a seat depth of 21.25 in, a seat height of 11.8 in, seating for three, a left-hand orientation and a beige corduroy cover. The bullets say it fits through standard apartment elevators and narrow doorways. Good for a small room. Keep in mind: it sits very low at 11.8 inches, and its orientation is stated as left-hand.

Boneless Couch Small, Convertible Sleeper Sofa Bed, Mini Modular Sectional Sofa, Tri-Folding Cloud Couch with L-Shape Chaise (B0H6B2CHZK). The table gives 20 x 68 x 19 in, 38 lb, a listed weight capacity of 800 pounds, seating for two and corduroy over foam. The bullets describe a tri-folding mechanism and straps joining the modules. No assembly. Good if you want a mini sofa that folds out. Keep in mind: the 20 inch depth is not credible for a sofa with a chaise, so ask for the assembled size.

How to choose

  1. Read the size in the title, then the table, and note any disagreement.
  2. Compute the assembled footprint as the long side times the short side.
  3. Find the weight of the heaviest module and the narrowest opening on the path.
  4. Pick the seat height you want, because boneless modules sit low.
  5. Decide whether you will rearrange. If not, a single sofa may be simpler.

You may not need a modular sofa. If your room and layout will not change, a regular sofa avoids straps that can shift. If you want a matching pair of seats instead, see couch and sofa set.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trusting a table where depth and width look swapped.
  • Using a module size as the whole sofa size.
  • Ignoring the corner notch when you compute floor share.
  • Expecting a boneless module to stay put on a slick floor.
  • Skipping the doorway check because the box is light.

Bottom line

A modular sofa is only as reliable as its numbers. Read the title size, compute the footprint, and ask the seller when a table contradicts itself. Of the three, the 65 inch mini is the best fit for a small room on paper, and the 79 inch is the one to size carefully.

Frequently asked questions

What is a modular sofa?

A sofa made of separate units that join into different shapes, such as an L or a straight line.

How big is a modular sofa?

It varies widely. The two listings with usable numbers here take 2,685 and 3,875 sq in as assembled, which is 15.5 and 22.4 percent of a 10 by 12 ft room.

Are modular sofas easy to move?

Foam modules in these listings weigh 38 to 71.8 lb in total, and they ship compressed. Measure the largest piece against your narrowest doorway.

Do modular sofas stay together?

The 68 inch mini listing says straps connect the modules. That is a seller claim, so check the connection method on any modular sofa you consider.

Is a modular sofa better than a regular sofa?

It is better if you rearrange or move often, and no better if the layout stays fixed.
