Quick answer

To compare modern sofas, convert the look into numbers: overall height, seat height, the back height above the seat, and the floor the sofa takes. In the three sofas we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01 the overall heights run from 26 to 33.2 inches, and in two of them the seat height plus the back height add up to 1.5 inches more than the overall height, so the fields are measured differently.

What “modern” means in a listing
Wikipedia describes mid-century modern design, popular from about 1945 to 1970, as characterized by clean, simple lines and a lack of embellishment, with ergonomically designed furniture and often tapered or simple geometric forms. Listings borrow that vocabulary freely. A sofa called modern may have tufting, which is an embellishment, and one called low profile may be tall. The words are a starting point, so check the dimensions.
Three things you can measure give most of the look: how tall the whole sofa is, how high off the floor the seat sits, and how much back rises above the seat.
The three numbers
Worked example. For each sofa, back height above the seat is overall height minus seat height. The listings also state a seat back interior height, so we can compare.

The first two give 17.5 + 16.5 = 34 against an overall height of 32.5, and 18.9 + 15.8 = 34.7 against 33.2. Both are 1.5 inches over, so the seat back is probably measured from the top of the cushion and the overall height from the top of the frame, or the numbers differ for another reason the page does not explain. Use the seat back interior height for how the back feels and the overall height for fitting under a window.
The Liana table lists “Seat Height 26 in”, which is the same as its overall height, so it looks copied and should be treated as unknown. Its seat depth also repeats its overall depth of 37.4 inches.
Why the 26 inch Liana looks so different
At 26 inches overall the Liana is 6.5 inches lower than the Valour (32.5 minus 26) and 7.2 inches lower than the Hawken loveseat (33.2 minus 26). That is what a low-profile sofa is: a lower back. A low back opens up the room visually, and it also gives less support for your head and shoulders. If you want to rest your head on the sofa, a 26 inch back probably does not do it. Check whether you want a sofa that frames the room or one that holds you.
Floor and wall
Worked example in a 12 by 14 ft room (144 x 168 in, or 24,192 sq in). Footprint is width times depth.
- Valour: 73 x 31.5 = 2,299.5 sq in, which is 9.5 percent of the room (2,299.5 / 24,192).
- Liana: 86.6 x 37.4 = 3,238.8 sq in, which is 13.4 percent.
- Hawken loveseat: 53.5 x 32.7 = 1,749.5 sq in, which is 7.2 percent.
On a 12 ft (144 in) wall, they leave 71 in, 57.4 in and 90.5 in respectively. In sofas and sectionals we use about 20 percent as a yardstick for when a room starts to feel full, a planning estimate and not a published limit. All three are well under it.
OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 14 to 18 inches between a sofa and a coffee table and 30 to 36 inches for main walkways. Modern sofas often sit low, which makes a lower coffee table look right; see small coffee table.
Fabric and legs
The Valour listing says performance velvet polyester upholstery, a durable stain-resistant fabric and an innerspring pocket structure, without a rub count or a test. The Hawken loveseat is upholstered in brushed bouclé with four tapered solid wood legs, a shape that matches the tapered forms Wikipedia associates with mid-century design. The Liana describes dense foam padding in a soft fabric, with tufted seats and a stitched grid pattern.

Keep in mind: the 20.4 in seat depth is shallow, and the table lists an arm height of 6.2 in, which looks like height above the seat.

A window-sill check
Low sofas help when the wall has a window. Worked example with an assumed sill: suppose the sill is 30 inches off the floor (our example, so measure yours). The 26 inch Liana stays 30 − 26 = 4 inches below the sill. The 32.5 inch Valour is 32.5 − 30 = 2.5 inches above it, and the 33.2 inch Hawken loveseat is 3.2 inches above it. A sofa that rises above the sill hides the lower part of the glass and blocks any curtain that hangs to the sill.
Questions to send the seller
- What are the overall height, seat height and seat back interior height, measured from the floor?
- Is the seat depth the cushion depth or the overall depth?
- What fiber is the cover, and what is its rub count?
- What are the leg height and material, and can the legs be replaced?
- Do the pieces ship assembled, and what are the box sizes?
How to choose
- Decide the overall height you want: about 26 inches reads low, about 32 to 33 inches reads standard.
- Check the seat height against the people using it.
- Use the seat back interior height to judge support.
- Compute the floor share and the wall left.
- Read the fabric: ask for the fiber and the rub count.
You may not need “modern” at all. If comfort is the priority, check seat depth and seat height first, and let the style follow; the shapes above differ by only a few inches.
