Quick answer

Japanese joinery means joining wood with cut wooden joints and almost no nails, according to Wikipedia’s article on Japanese carpentry. On Amazon the term appears on a bamboo frame that says it uses it, a low platform frame in a Japanese style with no stated joinery and a foldable tatami floor board. Pick by what you need: a real frame, a very low bed or a folding base. Check the material in the table, because one listing’s title says solid wood and its table says engineered wood.

What Japanese joinery actually is

Wikipedia describes Japanese joinery as the use of wooden joints and almost no nails, a practice that grew from the hot, humid climate and earthquake risk, and that appears in temples, houses, tea houses and furniture. The article does not name individual joints in the text we opened, so we do not either. For a shopper, the useful point is a test: if a listing claims joinery, it should say the frame goes together with joints and a tool-free setup, and it should still say what the slats and legs are made of.

Tatami and the low bed

Tatami mats are the Japanese floor covering that shaped the low bed. Wikipedia gives regional mat sizes of 1.91 by 0.955 meters (Kyoto), 1.82 by 0.91 meters (Nagoya) and 1.76 by 0.88 meters (Tokyo), and thicknesses of 5.5 to 6 centimeters. The Kyoto size is about 75.2 by 37.6 inches, which is almost exactly a twin mattress (38 by 75 inches, per Amerisleep). A tatami mat is a rush weave on a core of rice straw or, in modern ones, wood chip board or foam. A “tatami bed frame” on Amazon is not a tatami mat; it is a slatted wood board.

Worked example: bed height with three bases

Say you use a 10 inch mattress (an assumption). The three listings below give a base height or thickness, so here is the top of the mattress above the floor:

  • Bamboo frame, 12 inches high (from its title): 12 plus 10, which is 22 inches.
  • Low platform frame, 7.68 inches high (table): 7.68 plus 10, which is 17.68 inches.
  • Folding tatami board, 0.8 inch thick: 0.8 plus 10, which is 10.8 inches.

The spread is 11.2 inches between the highest and lowest (22 minus 10.8). That is the real difference between a “Japanese-style” bed and a mattress on the floor, and it decides how easy the bed is to get out of. Pick the height you can use, not the name.

Size against the mattress

The low platform listing is a full, 75.98 by 54.72 inches. Amerisleep’s full mattress is 54 by 75 inches, so the frame is 0.98 inch longer and 0.72 inch wider (75.98 minus 75, 54.72 minus 54). That is a tight fit: the mattress sits almost flush with the frame, with under an inch of margin.

The folding tatami board is listed as a queen, 78 by 58 inches. A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches, so the board is 2 inches narrower (60 minus 58) and 2 inches shorter (80 minus 78) than the mattress, and the mattress overhangs. The listing’s tip says that if you use it as a bed board on a frame, the frame needs its own support beams, because it cannot replace them. Read that as a sign it is a floor base, not a structural bed.

We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The low platform listing shows “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so its cart button is hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened it.

Nectar bamboo platform bed frame and headboard, natural, queen. The title says the frame is 12 inches high and has floating center support legs and tool-free setup. The bullets say it is made of solid bamboo and crafted with traditional Japanese joinery, that no box spring is needed and that the slats are engineered for low noise. The page has no measurements table and no cart button on the page we opened. Best for: a buyer who wants the joinery story and a headboard. Watch out: there are no outside dimensions or weight in the listing, so ask before you plan the room.

Japanese style platform bed frame, pine and walnut finish, full. The table gives 75.98 inches long, 54.72 wide, 7.68 high and 56.5 pounds, and a material of engineered wood. The title says “Solid Wood”. The bullets give a low floor-standing design, reinforced cross beams, wooden slats, no box spring and no headboard. Best for: a very low bed in a small room. Watch out: the title and table disagree about the material, so ask which one is right.

Queen foldable floor bed frame, tatami style, wood slats. The table gives 78 inches long, 58 wide, 0.8 high and 36.4 pounds. The bullets give 0.8 inch thick natural pine, rounded edges, a raised slat structure for ventilation and no assembly, with a tip that it cannot replace support beams. Best for: a floor mattress you fold away. Watch out: it is 2 inches smaller than a queen mattress in each direction.

Questions to ask before you buy

If joinery is the reason you are buying, ask the seller three things in writing: whether the frame goes together with cut wooden joints or with metal bolts and brackets, what the slats and legs are made of, and what the outside dimensions and weight are. The bamboo listing says it uses joinery and tool-free setup but gives no dimensions, and the other two listings say nothing about joinery. A seller who answers all three has told you more than the listing did.

Mistakes to avoid

Reading “Japanese” as a guarantee. The name appears on listings that do not state joinery.

Trusting the title for material. One listing’s title says solid wood and its table says engineered wood.

Using a floor board as a frame. The tatami board’s own tip says it cannot replace support beams.

Ignoring height. A bed 22 inches off the floor and one at 10.8 inches are very different to use.

Forgetting the mattress overhang. A 58 inch board under a 60 inch mattress leaves 1 inch on each side.

When you may not need a Japanese-style frame

If you want the look but not the floor-level life, a low platform bed frame gives it with more height. For a real floor mattress, see our guide to a Japanese futon floor mattress. If you want drawers under the bed, a frame with storage suits better; see the full size bed frame guide for the size.

Frequently asked questions

What is Japanese joinery?

Wikipedia describes it as the use of wooden joints and almost no nails, developed with Japan’s humid climate and earthquake risk.

Is a Japanese joinery bed frame screwless?

Only if the listing says so. The bamboo listing says it uses joinery and tool-free setup, but the other two do not mention joinery.

How low is a Japanese-style bed?

The listings we read are 7.68 inches high for the platform and 0.8 inch for the folding board. With a 10 inch mattress the top of the bed is 17.68 and 10.8 inches off the floor.

Is a tatami bed frame a tatami mat?

No. A tatami mat is a rush weave on a straw or board core, 5.5 to 6 centimeters thick per Wikipedia. The Amazon item is a pine slat board 0.8 inch thick.

Does a low platform bed need a box spring?

The listings say no box spring is needed because slats support the mattress. Check your mattress maker’s guidance.
