Three different pieces share the name. A sofa with a chaise has a normal seat plus a long extension on one end. A chaise lounge chair is one long seat for one person. A convertible lounger folds between a sofa and a long seat. The three here are all boneless foam: two are chaise chairs described as sofas, and one is a two-in-one sofa and lounger. The arithmetic is 70 − 57 = 13, 70 − 66 = 4 and 78.74 − 70 = 8.74. Many people lie curled up or with feet on an arm, and then a short chaise is fine, which is the point of checking your own habit. This is an example height we chose and not a standard.

The 78.74 inch figure comes from a field that reads 39.37 x 78.74 x 14.96 inches with no labels for depth or width, so we read the longer side as the length. Ask the seller to confirm.

Seat height and getting up

POVISON’s guide gives about 17 to 19 inches of seat height for most adults. The 66 inch chaise lists 15.74 inches and the 57 inch lists 16.5 inches, so they are 1.26 and 0.5 inches under the bottom of the range (17 − 15.74 = 1.26; 17 − 16.5 = 0.5). That is a small gap. The lounger lists an overall height of 14.96 inches and no seat height, so it is the lowest of the three. A low seat helps lying back and hurts standing up, which is a trade-off, not a defect.

Size fields that disagree

The 66 inch chaise prints two sizes: 66 x 49.21 x 27.16 inches in one field and 62 x 54 x 33.5 inches in another, and a seat depth of 56 inches. The 57 inch chaise is cleaner at 57 x 35.43 x 25.59 inches. When two fields disagree, take the title size as the headline and ask for a drawing. The 66 inch listing also lists a metal frame while its bullets describe foam layers and reinforced springs, so check what is inside before you assume it is boneless.

How much floor it takes

Width times length gives the footprint. A 10 by 12 ft room is 120 x 144 in, or 17,280 sq in. The 57 inch chaise is 57 x 35.43 = 2,020 sq in, or 11.7 percent. The 66 inch chaise at 66 x 49.21 = 3,248 sq in is 18.8 percent. The lounger at 78.74 x 39.37 = 3,100 sq in is 17.9 percent. These room sizes are an example we chose. OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, so a 49.21 inch wide chaise in a 120 inch dimension leaves 120 − 49.21 = 70.79 inches for everything else.

Weight, doors and delivery

Weights are 72.3 lb for the 66 inch chaise, 46.9 lb for the 57 inch and 33.8 lb for the lounger. The 57 inch listing says it arrives vacuum-compressed in one box with no assembly, and the lounger says the same, so both come through a door easily. Furniture Academy says the entryway has to be wider than at least one of a piece’s depth, height or diagonal depth, and the U.S. Access Board gives 32 inches as a minimum clear width at doorways on accessible routes. The 57 inch chaise’s 25.59 inch height clears a 32 inch opening by 6.41 inches. These are finished sizes, not box sizes.
