Quick answer

If you want a finished lift-up bed, we did not find one in the Amazon results we read, so check bed makers’ own sites for “ottoman” or “lift-up storage” beds. If you want a kit, add the weight of the mattress and the lifted platform and compare it with the kit’s rating per pair, not per piece. In our example, a 60 pound mattress and a 40 pound deck total 100 pounds; against a 264 pound pair rating that is 38 percent, and against a 145 pound reading of the same listing it is 69 percent. A kit that states its load in one place only is easier to trust than one that states three.

Lift kits and lift-up beds

A lift-up bed is a finished frame with the lifting mechanism built in; you buy it as a bed.

A lift kit is the mechanism alone: pairs of hinges and gas struts, or an electric version, that you attach to a platform and a box you build or already own. It needs measuring, drilling and a clear understanding of the load. The Hatchlift listing, for example, says its kits require woodworking and mechanical skills and are for new RV installations only, not replacement springs.

Worked example: the lifted load

This is our own arithmetic, and the weights are assumptions, so weigh your own. Hatchlift’s listing says its queen kit is for 50 to 75 pound queen mattresses, so take 60 pounds. Add a plywood or slat deck of 40 pounds. The lifted load is 100 pounds.

The JinBoCheng listing states its capacity in four ways:

WhereFigureIn pounds (kg times 2.205)Load of 100 lb as a share
Title66 kg load capacity (per piece or per pack is not stated)145.5 lb69 percent
Bullet, one mechanism60 kg, 132 lb132 lb76 percent
Bullet, a pair120 kg, 264 lb264.6 lb38 percent
TableMaximum 132 kg291 lb34 percent

The table says 132 kilograms, while the bullet’s single-mechanism figure is 132 pounds, so the unit in one of them may be wrong. The title’s 66 kilograms does not say whether it is per mechanism or per pack. The readings do not agree, and the spread between the lowest and highest is a factor of two. We would use the lowest reading, 145.5 pounds, until the seller explains. At that reading the example load is 69 percent of the rating, which leaves less margin than you may want for a loaded deck.

Storage you gain. A box 12 inches deep (our assumption) inside a queen frame of about 59 by 79 inches holds 12 times 59 times 79, which is 55,932 cubic inches, or 32.4 cubic feet when you divide by 1,728, all reachable once the deck is lifted.

What the listings say

JinBoCheng 2 Pack Heavy Duty Hydraulic Bed Lift Mechanism (ASIN B0GGBHNVJT). The table gives each mechanism as 22 by 3 inches, cold rolled steel, a weight of 5.09 pounds for the pack and a maximum capacity of 132 kilograms. The bullets say one mechanism loads 60 kilograms (132 pounds) and a pair loads 60 to 120 kilograms (132 to 264 pounds), for bed boards, mattresses and sofas, in cold-rolled steel described as 30 percent stronger than ordinary iron, with an installation warning to follow the instructions. Best for: a manual lift for a mattress and board of moderate weight. Watch out: the load figures disagree, as above, and the page shows other models with loads from 10 to 100 kilograms per piece.

GHRERTX Hydraulic Bed Lift Kit, 2PCS Electric Storage Bed Lift Mechanism, Heavy Duty Gas Spring (ASIN B0F5WZ4PVT). The table gives a weight of 24.3 pounds. The bullets say an electric mechanism that raises and lowers the platform, a remote control and use for storage beds, boxes and sofa beds. The text we read states no load capacity, no dimensions and no power requirement. Best for: someone who wants a motorized lift and accepts the missing numbers. Watch out: without a load figure you cannot do the calculation above; ask before you buy.

Hatchlift RV Bed Lift Kit, Gas Strut System for 50-75lb Queen Mattresses (ASIN B00KPR2DZI). The table gives a weight of 1.75 pounds, steel and wood, and sizes queen, king, small and extra small. The title and bullets say it is for 50 to 75 pound queen mattresses, that you must measure the interior length of the under-bed compartment (a minimum of 31 inches), that it is incompatible with foam mattresses, that it is not a replacement spring and is for new RV installations only and that it needs woodworking and mechanical skills. Best for: an RV bed with a lightweight innerspring mattress. Watch out: foam mattresses are excluded, and it states a mattress weight range rather than a lifting force.

How to choose

Weigh the lifted parts. Mattress plus deck, as above.

Use the lowest stated load. If a listing gives several, assume the smallest until the seller confirms.

Check the mattress. Hatchlift excludes foam; others do not say.

Check the fit. Hatchlift needs a compartment of at least 31 inches in length; measure yours.

Check your skills. Fitting a lift kit means drilling and aligning hinges; the Hatchlift listing says so.

Measuring before you order a kit

Four measurements decide whether a kit can work in your bed. First, the interior length and width of the storage box: Hatchlift tells you to measure the compartment’s interior length and lists a minimum of 31 inches. Second, the depth, because the deck must clear the sides as it lifts. Third, the lifted weight, mattress plus deck, as above. Fourth, the mounting points: a lift kit is screwed to the deck and the box, so both need solid wood where the screws go.

Also think about how the deck behaves. A raised deck is heavy and moves; keep fingers clear of the hinge area and keep children away while it is up. The text we read for the three kits does not describe a hold-open or soft-close feature, so ask if you want one. The JinBoCheng listing carries an installation warning to follow its instructions, and we would follow it to the letter.

Mistakes to avoid

Buying by the title. The JinBoCheng title says 66 kilograms and the table says 132.

Forgetting the deck weight. The deck is a real part of the load.

Using a foam mattress with a kit that excludes it. Read the compatibility line.

Assuming a kit makes a bed. You still need the box, the deck and the fixing points.

When a different bed is better

If you prefer drawers, see bedframe with storage underneath and bed frame with storage. For a bed with open storage, see queen bed with platform. For a base that moves, see adjustable mattress base.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lift-up bed frame?

A bed whose mattress platform hinges up on gas struts or an electric lift to reveal a storage box.

Can I buy a lift-up bed on Amazon?

The results we read were lift kits, not finished beds. Check bed makers for “ottoman” or lift-up storage beds.

How much can a lift kit lift?

It depends on the kit. The JinBoCheng listing gives three different figures; the GHRERTX listing gives none in the text we read.

Do lift kits work with foam mattresses?

The Hatchlift kit does not. Check any kit’s compatibility line.

Is a lift kit easy to fit?

The Hatchlift listing says it needs woodworking and mechanical skills.

How much storage does a lift-up bed give?

With a 12 inch deep box in a queen frame, about 32.4 cubic feet, our example.
