Slipcovers for Couches: Read the Fit Range First

Quick answer

Measure your couch from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other, then read each listing’s fit range carefully, because some ranges mean the overall width and some mean the seat width. In our worked example an 84 inch sofa with 7 inch arms fits three of the four slipcovers by overall width, but its 70 inch seat is 1 inch narrower than the seat-width range of one of them. Choose a cover whose range clearly includes your number, and keep a spare 4 to 6 inches inside it, which is our own planning margin and not a published rule.

What a slipcover can and cannot do

A stretch slipcover fits over the whole sofa and hides stains, fading and scratches. It adds a washable layer. It does not fix a broken frame, flat cushions or a sofa that sags, because the cover follows the shape beneath it.

There are two common builds. A one-piece cover goes over the whole sofa, and a set cover adds separate covers for each seat cushion, which suits couches with loose cushions. The four listings here include both.

How to measure

Pottery Barn’s loose-fit measuring guide says to measure the width from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other, and it gives overall ranges by size: 60 to 76 inches for a loveseat, 68 to 86 inches for a small sofa and 78 to 96 inches for a large sofa. It also lists a back height of 30 to 38 inches. These are for its loose-fit covers and not for stretch covers, but the measuring method is the same.

Take four measurements.

1. Overall width from outside arm to outside arm.
2. Seat width, the width of the cushions between the arms.
3. Back height from the floor to the top of the back.
4. Arm width, since the arms take up a few inches on each side.

Write them down before you open a listing, because the listings use different measures.

Worked example: overall width or seat width

Say your sofa is 84 inches wide from outside arm to outside arm, and each arm is 7 inches wide. These figures are an example we chose. The seat width is 84 − 7 − 7 = 70 inches. Here is how it compares with the four listings.

The arithmetic is 84 − 78 = 6 inches above the Asnomy’s lower end, with 94 − 84 = 10 inches below its top. On the XINEAGE, 70 is 71 − 70 = 1 inch under the seat-width range, although the overall range of 71 to 91 inches contains 84. The XINEAGE listing prints two different measures, an overall 71 to 91 inches and a seat width of 71 to 90 inches, and a sofa between the two readings is a risk. For the Easy-Going, the listing gives a single 78 inch seat width for its oversized sofa cover, so an 84 inch overall sofa is 6 inches over that number and a 70 inch seat is 8 inches under it. Neither lands on 78, so ask the seller which of its size labels suits your sofa.

The LURKA listing is the confusing one. Its title says 78 to 94 inches, and its chart gives a total sitting area of 58 to 82 inches for the L size and 76 to 101 inches for the XL. A 70 inch sitting area is inside L, and an 84 inch overall width is inside the title range, so the same sofa could be L or XL depending on which measure you use. When a listing offers two measures, choose the one that matches how it defines the size, and ask the seller if you cannot tell.

How much stretch is in the range

A stretch cover’s range is a stretch budget. The Asnomy range of 78 to 94 inches has a ratio of 94 / 78 = 1.21, so the cover is asked to stretch about 21 percent between the smallest and largest sofa. The XINEAGE range of 71 to 91 inches is 91 / 71 = 1.28, about 28 percent. A cover at the bottom of its range hangs loose, and one at the top is taut, so a snug fit is likelier in the middle. That is our reasoning from the numbers and not a statement in the listings.

Fabric and care

The Asnomy listing says 90 percent polyester and 10 percent spandex, a jacquard fabric that is machine washable in cold water, with an elastic bottom. The XINEAGE says 85 percent polyester and 15 percent spandex, with anti-slip foam rods and elastic straps. The LURKA says polyester and spandex, machine wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. The Easy-Going is thick microfiber, quilted and reversible in black and beige, with ties, two foam tubes and a wash temperature of about 30 degrees Celsius.

The Asnomy’s table lists the product as water resistant and the XINEAGE’s as not water resistant, so check this if you have a pet that has accidents. The XINEAGE also says it prevents sliding with foam rods, and the Easy-Going says the same with elastic straps.

Cover the arms and the back

Slipcovers fail at the arms and the back. A short arm flap lets the cover ride up, which the Easy-Going listing addresses with a longer arm flap and the XINEAGE with foam rods you tuck into the creases. If your sofa has a high back, check the back height too. Pottery Barn lists 30 to 38 inches for the back, and the listing dimensions here, of 40 inches high for the Asnomy and LURKA, are not labeled as a back height, so do not read them as one.

Good if you want a thick reversible cover. Keep in mind: the listing’s size labels are seat widths, and the oversized sofa size is the one that lists 78 inches.

How to choose

1. Measure arm to arm, seat width, back height and arm width.
2. Read which measure the listing’s range uses.
3. Choose a range that includes your number with a few inches to spare.
4. Pick the build: one piece or a set with cushion covers.
5. Check water resistance if pets or children are in the house.
