Recliners That Turn Into Beds: Angle, Length and Fit

Quick answer

Most “lay flat” recliners do not go fully flat. The two we read from the same brand give a range of 105 to 170 degrees, not 180, which is a deep recline and not a bed. A chair bed is a different product: a folding frame that opens to a single mattress-like surface. If you want to sleep in the chair most nights, a chair bed gives you a flat surface; a lift recliner gives you a deep recline with a motor.

What “turns into a bed” really means

Three kinds of seat get described this way:

1. A power recliner that leans back a long way, with a leg rest that raises to the level of the seat.
2. A chair bed, with a folding frame and a pad that opens into a single bed.
3. A sleeper chair, often a small sofa bed with a mattress inside.

The first is what the keyword usually means to a shopper, and the third is covered by sleeper sofas. The listings in this guide are from the first and second groups.

Recline angle

The Zuacs B0FJDMZWDQ listing says the chair adjusts “to any angle between 105 and 170 degrees” with a remote and has a dual motor, so the backrest and the leg rest move separately. The second Zuacs listing (model 8755) says it has the same functions as the larger 8739B, with a dual motor and a manual headrest, and is slightly smaller without arm storage.

A reclined angle of 170 degrees leaves the back 10 degrees short of flat. That is a deep recline and many people find it comfortable for a nap, but it is not a flat bed, and a listing that says “lay flat” should be read with its angle range. If you need to lie fully flat, ask the seller or choose a chair bed.

Length and who fits

The Zuacs listings say the extended footrest is 4.7 inches, “ideal for users between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 9 inches and supporting up to 300 pounds”. The B0FJDMZWDQ chair is 37 inches deep, 35.8 inches wide and 42 inches high, with a seat height of 21.06 inches, a seat depth of 22.83 inches and a seat back height of 24.41 inches. It weighs 131.2 pounds.

A worked example with invented numbers. A person 5 feet 10 inches tall is 70 inches, which is 1 inch over the listed 5 feet 9 inches limit. A person 5 feet 2 inches is 62 inches, which is 1 inch under the lower limit. The listing does not say what happens outside the range, only that the range is ideal. The MAXYOYO chair bed lists a bed size of 76 by 30 inches. A person of 70 inches fits with 76 − 70 = 6 inches to spare, and a person of 76 inches fits exactly with no spare, so a taller person will overhang.

Weight rating

The Zuacs listings give 300 pounds. The MAXYOYO chair bed gives 400 pounds. These are the sellers’ numbers and we have not verified them.

A worked example. A 280 pound user on a 300 pound rating has 20 pounds of headroom, which is 20 ÷ 300 ≈ 6.7 percent. That is small, and a motorized recliner has moving parts. On the 400 pound chair bed the headroom is 120 pounds, or 30 percent. If you are near a rating, choose the higher one.

Motor, remote and power

The Zuacs recliners have two motors, a remote control, a counter-balanced lift, USB and Type-C ports, an 8-point massage system with heat, a timer, a manual headrest with three positions (10, 25 and 35 degrees) and cup holders. The 8755 lacks the arm storage of the larger model.

A motorized chair needs a nearby outlet. If you plan to sleep in it, think about what happens in a power cut. The listings do not describe a battery backup in the text we read.

The chair bed

The MAXYOYO chair bed is a foldable frame of metal and wood with corded fabric over foam. Its listing says it changes between a lounge chair, a reclining chair and a bed with multiple backrest positions. It is 32.7 inches deep, 30.3 inches wide and 36.6 inches high as a chair, and lists a bed size of 76 by 30 inches, a weight of 40 pounds and a 400 pound rating.

That is a much lighter and smaller thing than a lift recliner. It does not have a motor and it does not raise you to standing, so it is not an aid for someone who has trouble getting up.

Comfort for sleep

A recliner keeps your knees raised and your head close to your heart in some positions. A chair bed lets you lie flat. The listings make comfort claims, for example about reducing back pressure, and we have not verified them. A chair that you doze in for an hour is not the same as a bed for eight hours, and a mattress thickness is not given on the chair bed listing in the text we read.

If you have a bad back, a hip problem or a breathing condition, ask a clinician before you make a chair your main bed. If you are buying for an older person, a hospital-style bed may be a better answer.

Floor space

The Zuacs chair is 37 inches deep and 35.8 inches wide upright, a footprint of 37 × 35.8 = 1,324.6 square inches, about 9.2 square feet. The listings do not give the length when reclined, which is the number you need for your room. Ask the seller, and leave extra space behind and in front. The MAXYOYO chair bed needs 76 by 30 inches when open, which is 2,280 square inches, about 15.8 square feet, but it folds away.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not read “lay flat” as 180 degrees. Do not skip the height range on a motorized recliner. Do not assume a chair is a bed for every night. And do not forget the reclined length when you measure the room.

Who should skip these

If you want to sleep flat every night, a bed is better than any chair. If you are taller than the listed range, a standard lift chair may not fit. If you cannot stand without help, check that the lift is strong enough and ask a professional about the right equipment.
