Quick answer

An ergo desk is a desk that lets your body, not the furniture, set the posture. In practice that means a height you can change, a surface deep enough to put the screen at a comfortable distance, and legroom under it. “Ergonomic” on a listing is a label, so test it with numbers: the lowest and highest heights, the depth of the top, and the clear space under the surface.

The three listings we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01 are a 63 by 32 inch electric standing desk with a listed height range of 28 to 45.6 inches, a small 35 inch electric standing desk with a range of 28.3 to 46.5 inches, and a mobile rolling stand-sit desk whose first variant is 24 by 22 inches. We have not tested any of them. All figures come from the listings.

What the U.S. government guidance says

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Computer Workstations eTool is not a product standard, but it is a useful public checklist. On desks it says the surface should let you place the monitor directly in front of you, at least 20 inches away, advises against storing items such as a CPU under desks, and says desks should accommodate a variety of working postures. On legroom, it gives minimum clearance dimensions for the space under the work surface: at least 20 inches wide, 17 inches deep at knee level, 24 inches deep at foot level and 4 inches high at the foot, with the clearance height adjustable between 20 and 27 inches near the user. These are meant to fit the majority of users, from the 5th percentile female to the 95th percentile male.

These are guidelines for workstations, not a pass-fail test for a desk you buy. They are still the best public numbers to measure against.

Height range

A desk is only ergonomic if it reaches your seated and standing heights. The three listings state:

  • 63 inch desk: minimum height 28 inches, maximum 45.6 inches. The range is 45.6 − 28 = 17.6 inches.
  • 35 inch desk: minimum 28.3 inches, maximum 46.5 inches, with three height positions listed as memory presets. The range is 46.5 − 28.3 = 18.2 inches.
  • Mobile desk, first variant: 29 to 45 inches, a range of 16 inches. The page covers several variants with other ranges, up to 49.3 inches on the highest one.

Measure your own numbers rather than trusting a chart: elbow height while seated in your chair and elbow height standing in the shoes you wear. The desk must reach both, with room for a keyboard on top. Our guide to the best electric standing desks compares more models.

Depth and the monitor distance

OSHA’s desk page puts the monitor at least 20 inches away. The depth of the top is therefore a hard limit on how far back a screen can sit. The 63 by 32 inch desk is 32 inches deep, which leaves room for the screen at the back and a keyboard in front. The 35 inch desk is listed as 35 inches deep by 20 inches wide, but those labels look swapped for a small desk, so we cannot tell if it is 35 inches wide and 20 deep. If it is 20 inches deep, a monitor at the back would sit barely 20 inches from you at the front edge, so it suits a laptop better than a large screen. Confirm before you order.

Legroom and the underside

The clearance under the surface is the number most listings omit. OSHA’s variable dimension is a clearance height between 20 and 27 inches near the user, depending on your body. A desk at its lowest setting of 28 inches, with a top about 1 inch thick (our assumption; the listing does not state the thickness), has an underside near 27 inches, which is the top of OSHA’s range. If a frame, drawer or crossbar sits lower than that, it eats into your thighs. For mobile desks with a single column, legroom is rarely an issue, but the base can catch your feet.

Footprint and the room

Area helps compare desks: 63 × 32 = 2,016 square inches, or 14 square feet. The small desk, taking the listed 35 by 20 figure, is 700 square inches, or about 4.9 square feet. The mobile desk’s first variant has a 24 by 22 inch work surface, which is 528 square inches, or 3.7 square feet. A rolling desk can be parked away, which is a different kind of space-saving; see the best standing desks for small spaces.

Weight and stability

Listed weights are about 47 pounds for the 63 inch desk, 30 pounds for the small desk and 36.7 pounds for the mobile desk’s first variant. A heavy base reduces wobble at full height, but listings rarely state a stability test. The mobile desk’s listing gives weight capacities of 15 to 38.5 pounds depending on variant, which is a laptop and a mouse, not two monitors. The other two listings did not state a load limit in the rows we read, so ask the seller what the top supports before you add monitors.

A worked example

These numbers are invented for planning. You are a person whose seated elbow height at your chair is 26 inches and whose standing elbow height is 43 inches. You want a keyboard that sits about 1 inch above the desk.

  • Sitting: the keyboard top should be near 26 inches, so the desk surface should be near 25 inches. The lowest listed settings are 28, 28.3 and 29 inches, all above 25. You would need a lower chair setting or a keyboard tray under the top, or a different desk. The shortfall at the lowest setting is 28 − 25 = 3 inches for the 63 inch desk.
  • Standing: the surface should be near 42 inches. All three desks reach it: the 63 inch desk’s maximum of 45.6 leaves 3.6 inches of margin, the 35 inch desk’s 46.5 leaves 4.5 inches, and the mobile desk’s 45 leaves 3 inches.

So in this example the desks suit standing but not sitting, which is why the lowest setting matters as much as the highest. If your seated elbow height is about 29 inches or more, the lowest positions fit with a 1 inch keyboard. This example is a reminder to measure, not a ruling on any desk.

Which type for which person

A full-size electric desk suits a person who works at it most of the day and wants memory presets. A small electric desk suits a bedroom or a tight alcove. A mobile desk suits a shared space, where it is moved between rooms, or a person who needs a changeable spot more than a big surface. A fixed desk with a sit-stand converter is a fourth route; see the standing desk versus fixed desk guide.

What ergonomic does not mean

A tall desk does not fix a bad chair. Standing for hours is not automatically better than sitting; OSHA’s page asks for desks that accommodate a variety of working postures, which is a reason to change position, not to pick one. We did not find a numeric rule for how long to sit or stand in the sources we opened, so we do not give one.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is buying by maximum height and ignoring the minimum. The second is ignoring depth: a monitor on a shallow desk sits too close. The third is putting a computer tower under the desk, which OSHA advises against.

Who should skip an ergo desk

If a good chair and a fixed desk at the right height already work, a sit-stand desk adds cost and weight for little gain. If your floor is soft carpet, check that the feet are stable. If you share the desk with someone of a very different height, an electric desk with memory presets is helpful.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ergo desk?

A desk that can be adjusted to your body, usually in height, and that has enough depth and legroom. It is a descriptive label, not a standard.

What height range should an ergonomic desk have?

It must reach your own seated and standing elbow heights. The three listings we read run from 28 to 46.5 inches. Measure yourself first.

How deep should an ergonomic desk be?

OSHA says the surface should let you put the monitor at least 20 inches away. A 32 inch deep top gives room; a 20 inch deep top is tight.

Is a small standing desk enough for work?

For a laptop, yes. For a large monitor, check the depth. The mobile desk’s listed weight capacity is 15 to 38.5 pounds by variant.

Bottom line

An ergo desk earns the name through measurements: a height range that fits your body, a depth that lets the screen sit back and legroom under the top. Measure your elbows, check the minimum height and then choose the type.
