Quick answer
Bar stools with backs are more comfortable for a long breakfast or homework, but they take more room than backless stools and the backs often stop short of your shoulders. The check that matters most is seat height against your counter. Then check the back height, the seat width, whether the stool swivels or adjusts and the weight rating.
We read three Amazon sets on 2026-10-01: the HOOBRO round bar stools with back, 25.2 inch seat (ASIN B0CGYPTWLN), the HOOBRO PU upholstered stools with footrest, 26 inch seat (B0CGYMGFXW) and the COLAMY swivel stools with an adjustable height (B0DZ2LZY4Y). Each is a set of two. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat on any of them, and we do not show prices; check the current price on Amazon. Every number comes from the listings.

Seat height against your counter
Standard counters are often about 36 inches high and bars about 42 inches, but yours may differ, so measure. The gap between the seat and the underside of the counter matters more than the labels “counter height” and “bar height”. As our own planning estimate, not a published standard, leave roughly 10 to 12 inches between the top of the seat and the top of the counter. Anything much tighter jams your thighs; anything much looser makes you reach up.
A worked example with invented numbers. Your island is 36 inches high. The HOOBRO round stool has a 25.2 inch seat, so the gap is 36 − 25.2 = 10.8 inches, inside our estimate. The HOOBRO PU stool has a 26 inch seat and a gap of 10 inches, at the tight end. The COLAMY stool adjusts from 24.92 to 32.68 inches, so on a 36 inch counter the gap ranges from 36 − 32.68 = 3.32 inches to 36 − 24.92 = 11.08 inches. At the top setting it is too tight for most people, so you would set it low.
Now try a 42 inch bar. The HOOBRO 25.2 inch seat leaves 42 − 25.2 = 16.8 inches, which is too much. The COLAMY at its top setting leaves 42 − 32.68 = 9.32 inches, a bit under our estimate but close. A fixed 25 to 26 inch stool is for a counter, not a bar.
Back height and back width
A back gives support, but how much depends on its size. The COLAMY listing gives a back of 17.72 inches wide and 10.43 inches high in its comparison table. The two HOOBRO listings do not give a back height; their overall stool height of 36.6 inches minus the seat height (25.2 or 26 inches) suggests a back about 11.4 inches high (36.6 − 25.2) or 10.6 inches high (36.6 − 26) above the seat. That is our own subtraction, not a listed figure.
So all three have backs of roughly 10 to 11 inches above the seat. That reaches the lower and middle back, not the shoulders. If you want shoulder support, you need a taller back, and these listings do not give one.
Seat width and how many fit
The HOOBRO round stool has a 12.6 inch seat width, which is small. The HOOBRO PU stool has a 13 inch seat width. The COLAMY listing gives a 16.34 by 16.34 inch seat in its table and a base 17.72 inches in diameter.
As our own planning estimate, allow about 24 inches of island length per stool, so people have elbow room. On a 72 inch island, that is 72 ÷ 24 = 3 stools. The 17.72 inch COLAMY base is wider than the other two, so check that you can fit the number of stools you want without the bases overlapping. Three COLAMY bases in a row take 3 × 17.72 = 53.2 inches of floor, leaving 72 − 53.2 = 18.8 inches in total between and around them.
Swivel, adjustment and footrest
The COLAMY stool swivels 360 degrees and adjusts in height; the listing says the height ranges from 24.92 to 32.68 inches. The HOOBRO stools are fixed height, with a footrest and a back. A swivel is convenient in a kitchen but can make the seat spin when a child climbs on, and a fixed stool is steadier.
A footrest matters on a tall seat because your legs have nowhere to rest otherwise. The HOOBRO PU listing mentions a footrest; the round HOOBRO listing does not mention one in its title, so check the pictures.
Weight rating
The round HOOBRO stool lists a 200 pound maximum. The HOOBRO PU stool lists 220 pounds. The COLAMY stool lists 250 pounds on its base, with other versions in its comparison table up to 300 pounds. These are the sellers’ numbers, and we have not verified them.
A worked example. A 210 pound adult on a 200 pound rating is 10 pounds over. On the 220 pound rating the headroom is 10 pounds, and on the 250 pound rating it is 40 pounds, which is 40 ÷ 250 = 16 percent. If a child climbs on, the load can spike for a moment, so ask for a higher rating if you can.
Materials and weight
The HOOBRO stools are particleboard and metal; the round listing gives a weight of 17.3 pounds and the PU listing 17.84 pounds, and neither says whether that is per stool or per set. The COLAMY listing gives an upholstered fabric seat. Fabric hides marks but stains; PU wipes clean but can crack with age. The weights are light enough to carry but also light enough to slide on a smooth floor, so check for floor protectors.
Assembly
The HOOBRO listings say parts are numbered and come with simple instructions and tools. Plan on 20 to 40 minutes per set, which is our estimate and not a listing figure.
The three listings we read
HOOBRO Bar Stools, Set of 2 Round Bar Chairs with Back, 25.2 inch (ASIN B0CGYPTWLN). The listing gives 12.6 by 12.6 by 36.6 inches, a seat height of 25.2 inches, a 200 pound maximum, a listed weight of 17.3 pounds and a metal frame. Good for: a small stool for a 36 inch counter. Keep in mind: the 12.6 inch seat is small and the rating is the lowest of the three. The page showed an Add to Cart button.
HOOBRO Bar Stools, Set of 2, PU Upholstered with Footrest and Back, 26 inch (ASIN B0CGYMGFXW). The listing gives 13 by 13 by 36.6 inches, a seat height of 26 inches, a 220 pound maximum, a weight of 17.84 pounds and a PU seat. Good for: a footrest and a slightly bigger seat. Keep in mind: the 26 inch seat leaves a 10 inch gap under a 36 inch counter, which is tight. The page showed an Add to Cart button.
COLAMY Bar Stools Set of 2, Modern Swivel, Adjustable Upholstered with Full Backrest (ASIN B0DZ2LZY4Y). The listing gives a height range of 24.92 to 32.68 inches, a 250 pound capacity, a seat of 16.34 by 16.34 inches, a back 17.72 inches wide and 10.43 inches high, a base 17.72 inches wide and a 360 degree swivel. Good for: an island or bar where the height may vary. Keep in mind: the base is wide and the top setting is too high for a 36 inch counter. The page showed an Add to Cart button.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not buy by the words “counter height” or “bar height” alone. Do not forget that a stool with a back needs room behind it to pull out. Do not assume a swivel is safe for children. And do not count only the seat; the base can be wider than the seat.
Who should skip bar stools with backs
If your counter is tight against a wall, backless stools tuck away and take less room. If you want shoulder support for long hours, a tall back or a chair is better; see counter height dining room chairs. If you have small children, a fixed stool with a footrest is safer than a swivel.
Frequently asked questions
What seat height do I need for a 36 inch counter?
Our estimate is about 24 to 26 inches, which leaves roughly 10 to 12 inches between seat and counter. That is a planning estimate and not a published standard.
How tall are the backs on bar stools with backs?
The COLAMY listing gives 10.43 inches. The HOOBRO listings do not give a back height, but subtracting seat height from overall height suggests about 10 to 11 inches.
How many stools fit at an island?
About one per 24 inches of length by our estimate, so a 72 inch island fits 3.
Are swivel stools better?
They are convenient but can spin under a child. A fixed stool is steadier.
What weight can a bar stool hold?
The three listings we read give 200, 220 and 250 pounds. Those are the sellers’ figures.
Bottom line
Choose bar stools with backs by seat height against your counter, back height, seat and base width and weight rating. Of the three sets, the round HOOBRO is the small 25.2 inch stool, the HOOBRO PU is the 26 inch one with a footrest and the COLAMY is the adjustable swivel with the widest base. Measure your counter first.
