Back height

The back is the main difference between these benches, and listings rarely give its height. You can estimate it as overall height minus seat height. The HOOBRO bench is 29.6 inches high overall with a seat height of 17.5 inches, so its back rises about 29.6 − 17.5 = 12.1 inches above the seat.

That is a low back. It reaches the lower and middle back, not the shoulders. The HARELA PU listing gives a size of 110 by 54 by 71 centimeters, which is about 43.3 by 21.3 by 28 inches, but does not give a seat height, so the back rise is unknown. The other HARELA listing gives only a length.

Length and how many sit

As our own planning estimate, not a standard, allow about 24 inches of bench per adult. The HOOBRO bench at 39.4 inches seats about 1.6 adults, and its listing says it seats 2. The HARELA wood bench at 47.2 inches seats about 2 adults. The HARELA PU bench at about 43.3 inches seats about 1.8.

A bench with a back usually has less width per person than a bare one, because the back and any arms narrow the seat.

Depth and the table

A bench with a back has to sit clear of the table edge. The HOOBRO bench is 11.9 inches deep, which suggests the listed depth is the seat or the base. The HARELA PU bench is about 21.3 inches deep, which probably includes the back. Because the dimensions are given differently, ask whether the depth includes the backrest.

Leave room behind the bench too. A bench with a back that sits against a wall turns the table into a booth.

Weight rating

The HOOBRO listing gives 330 pounds. The HARELA listings give no weight rating in the text we read. The rating is the seller’s and we have not verified it. Two adults together may exceed 330 pounds, so check whether the number is per person or for the bench.

Materials

The HOOBRO bench is pure bamboo with a ventilated rattan-style backrest and reinforced legs. The HARELA wood bench is rubber wood with a natural grain and rounded corners. The HARELA PU bench has a wooden frame, high-density sponge and a PU leather exterior.

Bamboo is light, at 17 pounds, while the rubber wood bench is 33.1 pounds. PU leather wipes clean, which suits a table where children eat.

Conflicting listings

The two HARELA listings share the model number HA6645 but give different weights (33.1 and 22 pounds) and different sizes (47.2 inches long versus about 43.3 inches). They may be two versions or an error. Ask the seller which numbers apply to the one you order.

The HARELA wood listing also shows a size field of 1.18 by 0.79 by 0.39 inches, which cannot be the bench.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. Your table is 60 inches long and 30 inches high. You want one bench on a long side. The person who will sit there has a lower back that curves about 7 inches above the seat.

Back height. The HOOBRO’s back rises about 12.1 inches, which is 12.1 − 7 = 5.1 inches above the lower back point. It supports the lower back but not above the shoulders.

Seats. The HARELA wood bench takes 47.2 inches of the 60 inch side, leaving 60 − 47.2 = 12.8 inches. It seats about 47.2 ÷ 24 ≈ 2 adults. The HOOBRO takes 39.4 inches and seats about 1.6.

Weight. Two adults of 200 and 190 pounds total 390 pounds. The HOOBRO’s 330 pounds is 390 − 330 = 60 pounds under that total, so it would be overloaded if the rating is for the whole bench.

Tuck. The bench with a back stops at the table edge, so the 11.9 inch depth sticks out from the table instead of sliding under.

Red flags in listings

A size field that shows a few inches for a bench, two listings with the same model number and different sizes, no seat height and a back with no height are signs to ask. Also check whether “with back” means a full backrest or a low rail.

If you want the bench to tuck under the table, choose a backless bench. If you need strong back support, chairs with a full back are better; see most comfortable dining room chairs. If your table is small, a bench with a back takes more floor than stools.
