Couch for a Small Living Room: Four-Step Fit Math

For a small living room, work in four steps: the wall the couch sits on, the room depth left after the couch, the gap for a table and a walkway, and the share of floor the couch takes. In a 10 by 11 ft living room (120 x 132 in), a 54.5 in loveseat leaves 65.5 in of wall and takes 11.7 percent of the floor, while a 65 in L-shape leaves 20.7 in of spare depth after a table and walkway.

We read the three couches below on Amazon on 2026-10-01, and we have not tested them. Sizes are the seller’s numbers, and some fields look mislabeled; we point them out. Step 1: the wall

Measure the wall the couch will sit against, then subtract the couch width to see what is left for an end table, a lamp or a door swing. Worked example on the 120 in wall:

• Lexicon sofa, 76.5 in wide: 120 − 76.5 = 43.5 in left.
• Lexicon loveseat, 54.5 in wide: 120 − 54.5 = 65.5 in left.
• MAXYOYO 61 inch loveseat: 120 − 61 = 59 in left.
• Novilla 65 inch L-shape: 120 − 65 = 55 in left.

If you want an end table of 16 inches on each side (our assumption), you need 32 in spare, which every option meets. If you also want to keep 36 inches clear beside a door, every option still passes, because the smallest remainder is 43.5 in.

Step 2: the depth

Now subtract the couch depth from the room depth of 132 in. Retailer guides such as OROA suggest 14 to 18 inches between the couch and a coffee table and 30 to 36 inches for main walkways. Our planning package is a 16 in gap, a 24 in table and a 30 in walkway, which is 16 + 24 + 30 = 70 in (our assumptions, not a standard).

The deepest piece, the L-shape, leaves 7.33 inches less spare depth than the Lexicon (28 minus 20.67), because its chaise adds depth. All three still fit, but the L-shape leaves almost no room for a deeper table or a rug edge.

Step 3: the floor share

The 10 by 11 ft room is 120 x 132 = 15,840 sq in, or 110 sq ft. Compute width times depth for each couch and divide.

• Lexicon sofa: 76.5 x 34 = 2,601 sq in, which is 16.4 percent.
• Lexicon loveseat: 54.5 x 34 = 1,853 sq in, which is 11.7 percent.
• MAXYOYO 61: 61 x 34.6 = 2,110.6 sq in, which is 13.3 percent.
• Novilla 65 L-shape: 64.96 x 41.33 = 2,684.8 sq in, which is 16.9 percent.

In sofas and sectionals we use 20 percent as a yardstick for when a room begins to feel full, a planning estimate and not a published limit. All four options are under it in this room, but a coffee table, a TV stand and a chair will add to it, so the smaller the couch the better.

Step 4: the delivery path

Small rooms often mean apartments, elevators and stairs. Furniture Academy’s rule is that the opening must be wider than at least one of a piece’s width, height, depth or diagonal depth, and the narrowest point on the path is your limit. The Novilla bullets say the couch fits through narrow doorways and elevators, and the Lexicon page lists the sofa at 76.5 x 34 x 36.5 in. Measure your own path, including stairs and turns.

Boneless couches, which are foam with no rigid frame, are the easiest to carry. The MAXYOYO is listed at 45 lb and the Novilla at 39.7 lb. They need time to expand after unboxing, and the listing for the one you buy says how long.

Three couches read on 2026-10-01

The description gives a 76.5 x 34 x 36.5 in sofa and a 54.5 x 34 x 36.5 in loveseat, each with a 21 in seat depth, a 19 in seat height, a 31.5 in arm height and a 300 lb capacity per seat. Good for a framed couch with a standard seat height and a narrow loveseat option. Keep in mind: a 21 in seat depth is shallow, and the listing sells a two-piece set, so check which piece you need.

MAXYOYO Modular Sofa Couch, 61″ Loveseat Boneless Cloud Couch with Deep Seat, Chenille. The table gives 34.6 x 61 x 29.5 in, 45 lb and two seat cushions, and the bullets describe a boneless design with deep seating, high-density foam and a tufted chenille cover. Good for a light couch that two people can carry. Keep in mind: the table’s seat depth of 34.6 in equals the overall depth, so the real seat depth is unknown, and boneless seats sit lower than framed ones.

The table gives 64.96 x 41.33 x 18.89 in and 39.7 lb, and the bullets describe a 65 in long by 42 in wide couch with no assembly and a low 11.8 in seat height. Good for a corner nook with a lounging chaise. Keep in mind: the table’s depth and width are the reverse of the bullets, and the 11.8 in seat is very low.

Seat width per person on the framed couch

The Lexicon listing gives a seat width of 66.5 in for the sofa and 44 in for the loveseat. For the sofa that is 66.5 / 3 = 22.2 in per person if three sit; for the loveseat it is 44 / 2 = 22 in each. Both are snug for adults by our planning estimate of about 22 inches as snug and 24 inches or more as roomy, which is our own rule of thumb and not a published figure. The boneless MAXYOYO does not give a seat width, so you cannot do this sum for it, and the Novilla gives none either. In a small room it often makes sense to seat two comfortably rather than three tightly.

Questions to send the seller

• What is the real seat depth and the seat height from the floor?
• What is the seat width per person, or the span between the arms?
• How much does it weigh, and what are the box sizes?
• How long should foam be left to expand after unboxing, if it is boneless?
• What are the maker’s care instructions for the cover?

Choosing for a small room

1. Subtract the width from the wall. Keep at least 32 inches spare if you want end tables.
2. Subtract the depth and the 70 inch package from the room depth. Keep 20 inches or more spare.
3. Compute the floor share. Prefer under 20 percent.
4. Plan the delivery path piece by piece.
5. Choose seat height by the people using it: framed couches sit near 19 inches and boneless ones near 12.

You may not need a couch at all. In a very small room, a loveseat and one accent chair can seat three with less floor than one three-seater.

Mistakes to avoid

• Measuring only the width. Depth decides the walkway.
• Forgetting the table. The 70 inch package is real space.
• Trusting listing depth fields. Two of three here conflict with another field.
• Buying a low boneless seat for someone with stiff knees.
• Counting the wall and ignoring the door swing.
