The two numbers that decide the fit
Size. Mattress Insider gives standard queen sofa bed dimensions as 58 by 72 inches or 60 by 72 inches. Bolon Home gives queen sleepers at about 58 to 60 by 72 to 80 inches and full sleepers at about 52 to 54 by 72 to 75 inches. For comparison, Amerisleep lists a bedroom queen at 60 by 80 inches. The length is the number that trips people: 72 inches is 8 inches shorter than a bedroom queen.
Thickness. Mattress Insider says most sofa beds take a mattress 4 to 5 inches thick, and warns that a thicker one may stop the sofa closing or damage the mechanism. Bolon Home gives 3 to 6 inches for pull-out sleepers. The range is the same in both: 4 to 5 inches is the safe middle, and the exact limit is the frame’s.
Do not buy a futon mattress for a sleeper
Futon mattresses are sized for futon frames. Banner Mattress lists them at 39 by 75 inches (twin), 54 by 75 (full), 60 by 80 (queen) and 76 by 80 (king), with thicknesses from 5 to 12 inches. Compare a full futon mattress with a 58 by 72 inch sleeper well: it is 3 inches too long (75 minus 72) and 4 inches too narrow (58 minus 54), so it would slide. A queen futon mattress is 8 inches too long (80 minus 72). Also, a futon mattress of 8 inches is far thicker than a sleeper frame takes.
How to measure your sofa
- Open the sofa fully and pull out the old mattress, or measure it in place if it is still good enough to use as a template.
- Measure the mattress well: length, width and the depth between the frame and the underside of the seat cushion when the back is folded.
- Measure the old mattress: length, width and thickness. Note how snug it is when the sofa closes.
- Choose a replacement the same length, at most 1 inch narrower or wider in the width and no thicker than the old mattress.
- Note the sofa’s brand and model number and ask the maker for the mattress size; we have not checked which makers publish it.
Worked example: a 58 by 72 inch well and a 4.5 inch mattress
Say the frame’s mattress well measures 59 inches wide by 72 inches long and the old mattress is 4.5 inches thick and closes without force. A replacement that is 58 by 72 by 4.5 inches fits: it is 1 inch narrower than the well and exactly as long and thick as the old one. A 60 inch wide mattress would be 1 inch wider than the well and would buckle at the edges, and a 5 inch thick mattress would add half an inch (5 minus 4.5) to a sofa that already closes with little margin.
Weight matters too, because you lift the mattress as you fold it. Of the three mattresses below, the thickest is 26.2 pounds and the thinnest 17.6, a difference of 8.6 pounds (26.2 minus 17.6). A lighter mattress is easier to fold and to handle when you change the sheets.

Best for: a sleeper frame that took a 4 to 5 inch mattress and needs the thickest option. Watch out: at 26.2 pounds it is the heaviest, and at 4.5 inches it leaves the least room for the cushion.

Mistakes to avoid
Using a bedroom queen size as your guide. A sleeper mattress is 72 inches long, not 80.
Ordering by the word “queen”. Measure the well and the old mattress.
