What a daybed is, and what that means for seating
Wikipedia describes a daybed as furniture used as a bed and for lounging, reclining and seating in a common room, with backs and sides, commonly in twin size of about 39 by 75 inches, and often with a trundle. Modern versions use a wood, metal or mixed frame. Amerisleep’s chart puts a twin mattress at 38 by 75 inches. The seat you sit on is the mattress, and the mattress is 38 inches from the back rail to the front edge, unlike a sofa.
The sofa comparison comes from the Chesterfield listings we read for our sofa guides: they give seat depths of 22, 22.5 and 23.5 inches. A twin daybed seat at 38 inches is 15.5 inches deeper than a 22.5 inch sofa seat (38 minus 22.5). A seat that deep suits sitting sideways with your legs up, or sitting upright with cushions behind you. It does not suit sitting with your feet flat on the floor and your back against the rail, because your knees stop well short of the edge.
Worked example: a daybed in a 10 by 9 foot living room
Say the room is 10 feet by 9 feet, which is 120 by 108 inches, and the daybed is one of the twin models below at 80.5 inches long and 40.7 inches deep. Put the long side against the 10 foot wall: 120 minus 80.5 leaves 39.5 inches along the wall, enough for a side table.
Now the depth. Bolon Home’s clearance guide gives 14 to 18 inches between a seat and a coffee table and 30 to 36 inches for a main walkway. Take a 40.7 inch deep daybed, a 16 inch gap, an assumed 18 inch deep coffee table and a 30 inch walkway: 40.7 plus 16 plus 18 plus 30 equals 104.7 inches. The room is 108 inches deep, so 3.3 inches are left. A 34 inch deep sofa in the same layout would use 98 inches (34 plus 16 plus 18 plus 30) and leave 10, so the daybed takes 6.7 inches more floor than that sofa. In a room this size the daybed works, but only just.
If the daybed has a trundle, Banner Mattress says a pulled-out twin trundle needs roughly 75 by 76 inches of floor and recommends at least 24 inches of clearance around the bed. That is a general figure for trundle beds, not for any listing below, and the listings do not state a pulled-out size. Taking 76 plus 24 gives 100 inches, which leaves 8 inches in a 108 inch room, so the coffee table has to leave the room before the trundle comes out.
Setting a daybed up as seating
Put the long side against the wall. This makes the back rail your sofa back and leaves the walkway along the front.
Use bolsters or wedge cushions. Cushions against the back shorten the 38 inch seat toward a 22 inch sofa seat. Two bolsters are enough for most people.
Mind the seat height. The listings below give overall heights of 23.1 to 33.5 inches and do not state a seat height, so sit on one or add the mattress thickness to the frame height before you decide.
Cover the mattress. A fitted cover or a daybed cover keeps the bed looking like a sofa in the day; the bed linens go in a drawer or trundle.
Leave the arms. Two arms and a back make the piece read as a couch; a daybed with only a back reads as a bed.

At 23.1 inches high it is the lowest of the three and the least like a sofa. Best for: a low daybed in a room with a window or a wall behind it. Watch out: it is the only one of the three that states a weight limit, and 250 pounds is modest for two adults.

Mistakes to avoid
Expecting a 22 inch seat. A twin daybed seat is 38 inches deep.
Sitting on the bare mattress. Without a back cushion you sit forward and the rail is out of reach.
Forgetting the trundle floor space. Plan for about 75 by 76 inches plus a 24 inch clearance.
