Quick answer

A three-seat Chesterfield sofa is usually 79 to 89 inches wide and 30 to 35 inches deep, so it needs a wall of at least 7 feet plus room to walk beside it. Check that the arm height is close to the back height to confirm the classic shape, read the seat depth and seat height in the measurements table rather than the title, and treat any listing whose width and depth look swapped as unconfirmed until the seller confirms the real footprint.

What makes a sofa a Chesterfield

According to Wikipedia’s article on the design, a Chesterfield has deep buttoned upholstery and arms and back at equal heights, and it takes its name from Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, who is credited with commissioning the first one. The article also says the sofa was traditionally made of leather, and that in early twentieth-century Britain and Canada the word was used for any couch. For shopping, this gives you a simple test: if the arms are much lower than the back, the sofa is Chesterfield-style at best. If the listing gives an arm height, compare it with the overall height.

Fabric is now common too. Velvet is the usual alternative, and the three listings below are two velvet and one faux leather. The separate guide to a leather Chesterfield covers the leather question, and the Chesterfield couch guide covers compact two-seaters.

The four measurements that decide fit

Width. This includes the arms. The three listings below run from 79 to 89 inches, so a 7-foot wall (84 inches) takes the first one with 5 inches to spare and cannot take the other two.

Depth. The classic look is deep: the KGOPK listing gives 30 inches overall. The seat itself is shallower, listed at 22.5 to 23 inches.

Height. The listings give 29.5 to 32 inches overall, with a seat height of 18 to 18.5 inches. That is a lower seat than many modern sofas, and it feels lower still once the cushion compresses.

Weight. The two KEIKI listings show 100 pounds each and the KGOPK measurements table shows no weight. A sofa of this size is a two-person carry, so plan the route through the doorway and the stairs.

Worked example: a living room with an 11 foot wall

Say the room is 11 feet wide, which is 132 inches, and the sofa goes on that wall. Take the 82 inch KEIKI. 132 minus 82 leaves 50 inches, or 25 inches on each side if you center it, which is enough for a side table.

Now the depth. Bolon Home’s clearance guide gives 30 to 36 inches for a main walkway and 14 to 18 inches between a sofa and a coffee table. Take a 30 inch deep sofa, a 16 inch gap and a coffee table that is 20 inches deep (an assumption, not a listing figure). Then add a 36 inch walkway behind the table: 30 plus 16 plus 20 plus 36 equals 102 inches, or 8.5 feet. In a room that is 10 feet deep (120 inches) that leaves 18 inches, and in an 8 foot deep room (96 inches) the layout does not work. The sofa alone is not the problem; the coffee table and the walkway are.

We have not tested these. The numbers below are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. All three show “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so the cart button is hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened them.

KGOPK 3-seater Chesterfield sofa, velvet, grey. The table gives 30 inches deep, 79 wide and 32 high. The bullets give an 18 inch seat height, a 23 inch seat depth and a 66 inch seat width, and mention two pillows, rolled arms and nailhead trim. The bullets also mention “triple reclining positions” and a leather-look finish that the title does not, which suggests text copied from another product. The table has no weight. Best for: a room with a wall of 7 feet or more that wants velvet. Watch out: because the text is inconsistent, ask the seller about the upholstery and whether the sofa reclines.

KEIKI 82 inch velvet channel-tufted Chesterfield sofa, blue. The table gives a seat depth of 22.5 inches, a seat height of 18.5, a weight of 100 pounds, seating for three and a velvet, foam, wood and metal build. It lists the product dimensions as 82.2 inches deep, 31.2 wide and 29.5 high, which is clearly width and depth swapped for an 82 inch sofa. The listing calls it channel tufted, not button tufted. Best for: someone who wants the Chesterfield silhouette with a smoother back. Watch out: the swapped labels and the missing arm height.

KEIKI 89 inch faux leather Chesterfield sofa, brown. The table gives the same seat depth of 22.5 inches and seat height of 18.5, a weight of 100 pounds, seating for three and a faux leather, wood and metal build. The product dimensions read 88.5 deep, 30.5 wide and 30.3 high, again with width and depth swapped. It is the widest of the three, so it needs the longest wall. Best for: a large living room that wants a leather-look Chesterfield. Watch out: the same 100 pound weight appears for both KEIKI sofas although one is 6.5 inches longer, so ask for the real shipping weight.

Check the delivery route before the layout

A three-seat Chesterfield is long, and the depth is what has to pass the door. Say the narrowest doorway on the way in is 32 inches clear (a made-up figure, so measure yours). A sofa that is 30 to 35 inches deep cannot go through upright and flat-on: it has to be carried on its end or its back, with the arm leading. The 32 inch door clears the 30 inch KGOPK depth by 2 inches, and it does not clear the roughly 31 inch and 30.5 inch KEIKI depths by much more than 1 inch, which leaves no room for a hand on the frame. Two carriers on a 100 pound sofa each take about 50 pounds, and the stairs add turns. Measure the doorway, the turn at the top of the stairs and the clear width of the hall, and ask the seller whether the legs come off.

Mistakes to avoid

Buying by the title width. Some listings say 82 inches in the title and swap width and depth in the table. Read both.

Forgetting the walkway. The sofa is only part of the footprint; the coffee table and the path behind it decide the layout.

Assuming the seat is as deep as the sofa. A 30 inch deep sofa has a 22 to 23 inch seat, which is fine for most adults but shallow for lounging.

Skipping the delivery route. A 79 to 89 inch sofa of about 100 pounds needs a door that clears it. Measure the narrowest door and the turn to the room.

Ignoring the low seat. An 18 inch seat height is comfortable for many people but harder to stand up from for some. Sit on a similar seat before you commit.

When you may not need a three-seat Chesterfield

If the room is smaller than about 10 feet in one direction, a three-seat Chesterfield takes most of the wall and leaves little space for anything else. A two-seat Chesterfield or a smaller rolled-arm sofa can give the same look with 20 or more inches back. Compare with the guide to a loveseat for small rooms.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Chesterfield sofa and a regular sofa?

A Chesterfield has deep button tufting and arms and back at the same height, according to Wikipedia’s article on the design. A regular sofa usually has a lower arm and a smooth back.

How wide is a three-seat Chesterfield sofa?

The three listings we read are 79, about 82 and about 89 inches wide. Measure the wall and add space beside the sofa.

How deep is a Chesterfield sofa?

The listings state about 30 to 31 inches overall depth, with a seat depth of 22.5 to 23 inches.

Is a Chesterfield sofa comfortable?

The seat is low and the back is shallow and tufted. Comfort depends on the cushions, and the listings say little beyond foam type, so sit on one before you buy if you can.

Are Chesterfield sofas only made of leather?

No. Wikipedia says they were traditionally leather, and today velvet and other fabrics are common.
