Quick answer

Assume a “leather Chesterfield” on Amazon is a leather-look sofa until the listing states genuine hide, because the three sofas we read all state PU, faux or leather-style upholstery. Read the material line in the bullets, check that the arm height is close to the overall height (the Chesterfield test), and size the sofa on width, depth and seat height. The FTC’s leather guides say that material that appears to be leather but is not should be disclosed as such, so a named hide in the bullets is what you are looking for.

What “leather” can mean in a listing

There are three cases you will meet.

Real leather. A listing that says genuine or top grain leather and names the parts covered. In an Amazon search for “genuine top grain leather chesterfield sofa” on 2026-09-30 the results showed a leather-look sofa and a genuine top grain leather Chesterfield ottoman, and we did not find a genuine leather Chesterfield sofa to read in full. Treat a real-leather sofa as something to confirm with the seller.

PU or faux leather. A polyurethane coating on a fabric backing. The Industrial Chesterfield listing below says “PU leather upholstery” in its bullets; the HULALA listing says faux leather in its title.

Leather-style or leather-look. The EDLME listing’s title says “Vintage Tufted Leather Sofa Couch” while its bullets describe “leather-style material”. Read that as leather-look.

The FTC’s Leather Guides, which we opened on its site, say that disclosure of non-leather content should be made for material that appears to be, but is not, leather. That is a guide, not a promise about any one seller, so read the bullets and, if it matters, ask.

The Chesterfield test: arm height against overall height

The Wikipedia article on the Chesterfield says a classic Chesterfield has arms and back at the same height. Where a listing gives an arm height, you can test it:

  • HULALA: arm height 28.75 inches, overall height 28.75. Matches.
  • Industrial Chesterfield: arm height 30 inches, overall height 30. Matches.
  • EDLME: arm height 26 inches, overall height 33. The back is 7 inches taller than the arm, so it is Chesterfield-style, not the classic level top line.

This test is our own check, not a standard, but it separates a sofa with the classic level top line from one with a taller back.

Worked example: fitting an 84 inch sofa on a 10 foot wall

Say the wall is 10 feet, which is 120 inches, and the sofa is the EDLME at 84 inches wide. 120 minus 84 leaves 36 inches, or 18 inches on each side. For depth, Bolon Home’s clearance guide gives 30 to 36 inches for a main walkway and 14 to 18 inches between sofa and coffee table. A 34 inch deep sofa, a 16 inch gap, an assumed 18 inch deep table and a 30 inch walkway make 34 plus 16 plus 18 plus 30, which is 98 inches. A 9 foot deep room (108 inches) has 10 inches left. The 86 by 35 inch Industrial sofa adds 2 inches to the width and 1 inch to the depth, so the same room has 34 inches left in width and 9 inches in depth.

Three leather-look Chesterfield listings, read on 2026-09-30

We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The HULALA listing shows “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so its cart button is hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened it.

EDLME vintage tufted sofa, brown, 3-seater. The table gives 34 inches deep, 84 wide, 33 high, 140 pounds, a seat depth of 22 inches, a seat height of 18, an arm height of 26, an arm width of 8, a back cushion thickness of 6 inches, a wall clearance of 3 inches and a weight limit of 660 pounds. The bullets say the upholstery is leather-style with solid wood legs. Best for: a buyer who wants a wide Chesterfield-style sofa and accepts a taller back than arms. Watch out: the “Leather” in the title and the “leather-style” in the bullets.

Industrial Chesterfield sofa with metal base, black PU leather. The table gives 35 inches deep, 86 wide, 30 high, 150 pounds, a seat depth of 22 inches, a seat height of 17, an arm height of 30, a back cushion thickness of 4 inches, a wall clearance of 3 inches and a capacity of 660 pounds for three seats. The bullets call it PU leather with rivets on a metal base and wood frame. Best for: a loft or office that wants a level top line and an industrial look. Watch out: it is the deepest and heaviest of the three, and a 17 inch seat is low.

HULALA Home 81.5 inch faux leather Chesterfield sofa. The table gives 31.5 inches deep, 81.5 wide, 28.75 high, 96.8 pounds, a seat depth of 23.5 inches, a seat height of 19.75, an arm height of 28.75, a seat width of 67.25 inches, gourd legs, nailhead trim and a weight capacity of 900 pounds. Best for: a room that needs the lightest and shortest of the three with a level top line. Watch out: the 900 pound figure is the highest of the three, so ask what it means; and the page opens on the 3-seat version while the search result showed a 59 inch two-seat one, so check which size you are ordering.

Four questions to ask before you buy

If real leather matters, message the seller with four questions and wait for written answers before you order.

  1. What is the upholstery on the seat, the back and the arms: hide, PU or a mix? Some sofas use one material on the seat and another on the back or sides.
  2. What is the frame made of, and what is the leg made of? The listings above mention solid wood legs, a metal base and a wood frame, but not always the frame’s core material.
  3. What is the real shipping weight? The three listings above state 96.8, 140 and 150 pounds, and a larger sofa with a lower stated weight is a warning to ask.
  4. What is the return window for a large item, and who pays for the return shipping? A sofa of this size is costly to send back.

None of these answers is in the listing text we read, so the only way to know is to ask. If the seller will not answer the first question, that is your answer.

Mistakes to avoid

Reading “leather” in the title as the material. Read the bullet that names the upholstery.

Skipping the arm height. It tells you whether the top line is level.

Ignoring the low seat. 17 to 19.75 inches is low, and a leather-look surface does not give like fabric.

Planning the door with the width only. At 97 to 150 pounds a sofa needs a clear path and two people.

When you may not need a leather Chesterfield

If you want real leather, an Amazon listing that says “leather” is not a reliable route: ask the seller for the hide type in writing. If you mainly want the shape, a velvet Chesterfield gives the same silhouette; see the Chesterfield sofa size guide. For a smaller room, use the Chesterfield couch guide for two-seaters.

Frequently asked questions

Is a leather Chesterfield on Amazon real leather?

Not necessarily. The three listings we read describe PU leather, faux leather or “leather-style” upholstery. Read the bullet that names the material.

How do I tell real leather from leather-look in a listing?

Look for a named hide such as genuine or top grain leather and the parts it covers. Words such as PU, faux, vegan and leather-style mean it is not hide.

What size is a leather Chesterfield sofa?

The three we read are 81.5 to 86 inches wide and 31.5 to 35 inches deep. Measure your wall and leave a walkway.

What is the Chesterfield test for arm height?

A classic Chesterfield has arms and back at the same height. Where a listing gives an arm height, compare it with the overall height; the two match on two of the three sofas above.

Does a leather-look Chesterfield need special care?

The listings we read give little care information, so follow the seller’s instructions.
