Quick answer

A queen pull-out couch is worth buying only after you have checked four numbers: closed width against your wall and doorway, open length from the sofa back to the foot of the bed, the stated mattress size and thickness, and the clearance the listing wants behind the sofa. For a room where you need 24 inches of walkway at the foot of the open bed, a sleeper that opens to 90 inches needs a clear stretch of 114 inches, or 9.5 feet, from the back wall.

What “queen” means on a sleeper sofa

Do not assume the mattress inside a queen sleeper is a queen mattress. A standard queen bed is 60 by 80 inches, per the Amerisleep chart. Mattress Insider says a queen sofa bed mattress is usually 58 by 72 or 60 by 72 inches. That is eight inches shorter than a bedroom queen, which can matter for a tall sleeper (72 inches is exactly 6 feet).

Thickness is the second number. Mattress Insider says most sofa beds take a mattress 4 to 5 inches thick, and a thicker one can stop the sofa closing or damage the mechanism. Bolon Home gives 3 to 6 inches. One listing below states a mattress thickness of 3.93 inches, so the thin mattress is a known feature, not a defect. If you sleep on your side or weigh more than average, that thickness is what you will notice in the morning.

The four numbers that decide the fit

Closed width. The listings below range from 61.81 to 73.2 inches wide as sofas. Bolon Home’s guide gives a general range of 54 to 90 inches for closed width.

Closed depth. The three listings range from 33.1 to 50 inches. The 50 inch one is a sectional with a chaise, so its depth is the chaise length.

Open length. None of the three measurements tables states the open length. This is the single most important number, so ask the seller for it. As a planning range, Bolon Home gives 72 to 90 inches for the open depth.

Wall clearance. Two listings show a wall clearance line in the table: 1.18 inches on one and 33 inches on the other. The listing does not explain what the 33 inches refers to, so read the manual or ask before you plan the wall space.

Worked example: a 10 foot deep room

Say the couch goes against a wall in a room that is 10 feet, or 120 inches, from that wall to the opposite obstruction, such as a door or a closet. Suppose the open bed reaches 90 inches, the top of the guide range. Bolon Home advises at least 24 inches of clearance at the foot of an open bed.

90 plus 24 equals 114 inches, which is 9.5 feet. The room is 120 inches, so 6 inches are left. That is enough to open the sleeper, but a coffee table has to leave the room and the door cannot swing into that gap. If the open length is 72 inches instead, 72 plus 24 is 96, which leaves 24 inches, and a small table might stay. The difference between 72 and 90 inches decides the layout, and the listing does not tell you which one you have.

For the doorway, take the closed width and depth and compare with the narrowest opening on the way in. One listing below states a minimum door width of 35.83 inches, the same figure as its depth, so plan to carry that sofa through a doorway on its end. The other two do not state a door width, so measure their depth and width against your narrowest opening.

Homnso convertible queen sleeper sofa bed, 2-in-1. Table: 35.83 inches deep, 61.81 wide, 34.65 high, 115.7 pounds, seat height 18, seat depth 24.4, included mattress size queen, mattress thickness 3.93 inches, wall clearance 1.18 inches, minimum door width 35.83 inches. Bullets: rolled wrought iron frame, velvet upholstery, memory foam, a pull-out that glides on the bottom layer. Best for: a small room that needs a compact couch first and a bed second. Watch out: the open length is not stated and the 3.93 inch mattress is thin.

NBBOTBOT 73.2 inch queen pull-out sofa bed. Table: 33.1 inches deep, 73.2 wide, 36 high, 146.6 pounds, seat height 21.7, seat depth 23.2, size queen, furniture wall clearance 33 inches. Weight fields: a limit of 600 pounds, a minimum of 300 pounds and a maximum of 600. Bullets: velvet, steel tubing frame, transforms from loveseat to chaise lounge to queen bed. Best for: a room with a longer wall that wants a three-way loveseat. Watch out: the weight lines are odd, so confirm with the seller, and it is the heaviest of the three at 146.6 pounds.

WuerQi 71 inch sectional with queen pull-out and storage chaise. Table: 50 inches deep, 71 wide, 34 high, 152 pounds, seating for three. Bullets: the chaise is reversible to the left or right side and holds bedding. The table lists a seat height of 40 inches, which is more than the 34 inch overall height, so we would not rely on that line. Best for: a corner that needs seating for three and hidden bedding storage. Watch out: at 50 inches deep it is the largest footprint of the three, and it is the heaviest at 152 pounds.

Tape the open bed before you order

The simplest test is a roll of painter’s tape. Mark the closed footprint on the floor first, using the width and depth from the listing. Then mark the open bed: the sofa width, the open length you plan for (start with 90 inches and move it down only if the seller confirms a shorter figure) and a further 24 inches at the foot. Stand in the taped bed, open the door, walk to the window and check whether the closet or the heater is inside the rectangle.

Two details are easy to miss. First, side access: Bolon Home suggests 18 to 24 inches at each side of an open bed so a guest can get in and out, which is why a queen sleeper against a side wall is awkward. Second, the ceiling and the lamp or shelf above the sofa back, because the back folds or lifts on some models. If the taped rectangle blocks the door or the only walking route, choose a narrower sleeper or a different bed type.

Mistakes to avoid

Trusting the word “queen”. Ask for the mattress dimensions, not just the size name.

Skipping the stairs and turns. A 115 to 152 pound sofa needs two people and a clear path.

Planning the room around the closed sofa. Tape the open bed on the floor first.

Ignoring the mattress thickness. A 3.93 inch pad is fine for two nights and poor for two weeks.

When you may not need a queen hide-a-bed

If guests come once a year, a foldable guest mattress costs less and takes no floor space. If the room is smaller than 9.5 feet from the sofa wall, a queen sleeper cannot open with a clear walkway. A twin sleeper, a daybed or a smaller folding couch may serve better. Compare with the wider best sleeper sofas guide, the queen sleeper sofa overview, and the different-style couch that turns into a bed comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a queen hide-a-bed couch when open?

Bolon Home gives the open depth of sofa beds as about 72 to 90 inches from the sofa back. The listings we read do not state it, so ask the seller.

Is a sleeper sofa queen mattress the same as a normal queen?

No. Mattress Insider gives queen sofa bed mattresses as 58 or 60 by 72 inches, while a standard queen is 60 by 80 inches per Amerisleep.

How thick is the mattress in a queen pull-out couch?

Mattress Insider says most take 4 to 5 inches; one listing we read states 3.93 inches.

How much space do I need in front of an open queen sofa bed?

Bolon Home advises at least 24 inches at the foot and 18 to 24 inches at the sides. For a 90 inch open bed that means 114 inches from the sofa back.

Will a queen sleeper fit through a standard door?

It depends on the sofa’s depth and width. One listing states a minimum door width of 35.83 inches. Measure the narrowest door and turn, and compare with the sofa’s smaller dimension.
