Quick answer
A couch and recliner set is a matching group of reclining furniture, usually a sofa plus a loveseat, sometimes with a recliner chair. Before choosing the style, work out three numbers: the total width of the pieces, the reclined length of each piece, and the gap left between facing pieces when they are open. Many living rooms can hold a set when it is closed and cannot hold it when two people recline at once.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a power sofa-and-loveseat pair with stated sizes and a listed reclined length, a larger power set with speakers and lights whose seat counts do not agree, and a chair, sofa and loveseat set whose size fields are placeholders. We have not tested or sat on any of them. Everything below comes from the listings.
For a single reclining sofa, see recliner sofa. For an L-shaped layout with built-in recliners, see recliner sectional. For a two-seat piece on its own, see loveseat.
What a set includes
The word “set” covers different groups. A 2-piece set is usually a three-seat sofa and a two-seat loveseat. A 3-piece set adds a recliner chair or a wedge that joins two pieces. Some sets are sold as a bundle of pieces that you can also buy singly. Always check the listing for what is in the box, because a photo often shows more than is included.
Also check how many seats actually recline. In some sets every seat reclines; in others, only the end seats do, and the middle seat is a fixed cushion or a fold-down table. The number matters when you plan a movie night for four.
Manual or power
A manual recliner opens with a handle or a push-back. It has no cord and few parts. A power recliner opens with a button and can stop at several angles, but it needs a wall outlet or a battery pack, and the mechanism adds weight.
The Signature Design by Ashley listing we read describes power reclining with adjustable headrests, wireless and USB charging, a drop-down table with storage, reading lights and two-stage cup holders. The larger Comfort Stretch listing describes seats that recline from 90 degrees to 160 degrees with leg rests that extend from 0 to 90 degrees. More features give you more things to fail, so choose the ones you will use.
Total width and depth
Add the widths of the pieces that share a wall, then compare the sum with the wall. The Ashley listing gives 86 inches wide, 39.5 inches deep and 43 inches high for the sofa, and its bullet gives 75 inches wide for the loveseat. Together on one wall they need 86 + 75 = 161 inches, which is more than 13 feet, before any gap or side table.
If your wall is shorter, put the pieces on two walls in an L, or choose a loveseat and a recliner chair instead of a sofa. The second option is covered below.
Reclined length and the gap between pieces
This is the number most buyers miss. A recliner with its footrest out takes much more floor than one closed. The Ashley listing gives a reclined length of 80.5 inches. The listing does not say whether that applies to the sofa, the loveseat or both, so we will apply it to both as a cautious planning assumption.
Two pieces facing each other across a room need enough floor for both to be open at once, plus a route. The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance uses 36 inches as a minimum clear width for a route and 32 inches at short points such as doorways. That is a public-building rule and only a yardstick for a home, but it is a good reference for how much floor to leave between open recliners and the coffee table.
Materials and care
A set with faux leather, like the Ashley listing’s water-repellent two-tone upholstery, is described as easy to care for, but the listing does not say how the coating wears over years, so ask. A set with fabric feels different and may absorb spills.
The Comfort Stretch listing names faux leather, foam and metal, and a metal frame. The Ashley listing names foam cushions and a faux leather cover. Neither states the foam density. Ask the seller if cushion firmness matters to you.
Buy a set or buy pieces
A set gives you a matching color and the same height across pieces. Pieces give you flexibility: you can buy a sofa now and a recliner chair later, and you can put the chair where the space allows. If your room is narrow, a sofa plus a separate sofa chair or a single rocker may use the floor better than a second sofa. For a lounge chair that does not recline, see accent chairs.
The three listings we read
Signature Design by Ashley Next-Gen DuraPella Power Reclining Sofa and Loveseat with Console, Sand. The listing gives a sofa of 86 by 39.5 by 43 inches, a loveseat of 75 inches wide, a seat height of 19 inches and a reclined length of 80.5 inches. It describes power reclining, adjustable headrests, wireless and USB charging, a drop-down table, reading lights and two cup holders. Good for: a living room with about 13 feet of wall and a clear sightline to the TV. Keep in mind: the set is large for a small room, the reclined length is not assigned to a piece, and the “seating capacity” field says 3. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page did not show an Add to Cart button, so we could not check stock; that does not show whether it is available in the United States.
Comfort Stretch Power Recliner Sofa Set with Zero Gravity and Bass Speaker. The listing gives 38.5 inches deep, 85 inches wide and 41.3 inches high, a listed weight of 110 pounds, a 3-seat sofa with a fold-down table and a 2-seat loveseat with a speaker and storage console. Good for: a household that wants a home-theater set with charging and lights built in. Keep in mind: the title says “6-Seater” and the bullets say “5-Seater,” and a listed weight of 110 pounds looks low for two power pieces, so ask which numbers describe the full set. The page said it could not be shipped to the Vietnam delivery address we used.
Chair, sofa and loveseat 3-piece recliner set (JHXIN), deep gray. The listing names three pieces, a double-layer spring structure, high-density sponge, a motor and a switch with a USB jack, and gives a listed weight of 99.2 pounds. Good for: a buyer who wants a chair as well as a sofa and loveseat in one purchase. Keep in mind: the size fields show 0.39 by 0.39 by 0.39 inches and a seating capacity of 10, which are placeholders, so you cannot plan the room from the page. Ask the seller for the real measurements. This page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A living room is 12 feet (144 inches) wide between two walls. You want the Ashley sofa on one wall and the loveseat facing it on the other.
Both pieces are 39.5 inches deep. With both closed, the gap between them is 144 − 39.5 − 39.5 = 65 inches. That is comfortable, with room for a coffee table.
Open the sofa only. Its depth becomes the listing’s reclined length of 80.5 inches, so the gap is 144 − 80.5 − 39.5 = 24 inches. That is below the 32 to 36 inch yardstick, so you could not walk between them.
Open both. The space needed is 80.5 + 80.5 = 161 inches, which is 161 − 144 = 17 inches more than the room has, so the footrests would collide. The two pieces cannot be fully open at the same time.
The fix is to put the loveseat on the side wall instead of facing the sofa, or to use a single recliner chair. Rearranging costs nothing; buying the wrong set does.
Red flags in listings
Seat counts that change between the title and the bullets, weights that do not match the pieces, and size fields that show 0.39 inches are all signs of a listing that was not filled in carefully. They do not prove a bad product, but each is a reason to ask before ordering.
Also check how the set ships. A heavy set may come by freight carrier with an appointment, and pieces may arrive separately, so check that each piece fits through the door and the stairs.
Who should skip a set
If your room is under about 11 feet across, a facing pair will leave little gap when open. If one person uses the room, a single recliner and a small sofa are easier to place. If you want help standing, a lift chair is the better product.
Frequently asked questions
How much space does a couch and recliner set need?
The sum of the widths on one wall, plus the reclined length and a route between pieces. One listing gives a sofa at 86 inches and a loveseat at 75 inches.
Can two recliners face each other?
Only if the room is wide enough for both open at once. In a 144 inch room, two 80.5 inch reclined pieces need 161 inches, so they would collide.
Is a power set better than manual?
Power is easier to operate and allows several positions. Manual has no cord. Decide by who will use it and where the outlet is.
What if the listing shows 0.39 inches for the size?
That is a placeholder. Ask the seller for real measurements and do not compare it with other listings.
Do all seats recline in a set?
Not always. Some sets have fixed middle seats or a fold-down table. Count the reclining seats in the bullets.
Bottom line
Plan a couch and recliner set with three numbers: total width, reclined length and the gap between facing pieces. Of the three listings, the Ashley pair gives the clearest size data, the Comfort Stretch set packs the most features but has conflicting seat counts, and the JHXIN set is the one that needs the seller’s measurements before you can plan a room. Test the room with tape on the floor before you buy.
