Ergonomic Desk Set-Up: Desks and Chairs Compared

Quick answer: build the set-up from the chair up. Choose a seat height you can hold, then pick a desk whose lowest setting still leaves room for your forearms at the keyboard. The desks in our file have lowest listed heights between about 27 and 29 inches and highest heights between about 45 and 46.5 inches. Those are the limits to match against your own body and chair, not a fit for everyone.

A desk and chair only work well together when their heights overlap. A standing desk gives you a second position, but it does not replace a chair you can adjust. This guide compares six desks and three chairs from our product file, and shows how to check the numbers before you buy. For the screen, keyboard and posture checks, see our desk posture guide.

All figures come from manufacturer listings in our product file, checked on 12 October 2026. We have not tested any of these products. Where listing figures disagree, we name the conflict below.

Start with the chair, then the desk

The seat of the chair and the top of the desk need to work together. Start with the chair’s seat height range, then compare it with the lowest height the desk can reach. Our file has one example: the BestOffice chair lists a seat height range of 17.1 to 20.3 inches. Compared with a desk at its lowest listed height of 28.3 inches, the gap at the highest seat setting is 8 inches (28.3 minus 20.3). This is simple arithmetic, not a standard. Whether 8 inches suits you depends on your forearm height and how your elbows sit, so check it in the room.

When a fixed desk is enough

If you sit for a few hours a week, or your chair already fits your current desk height, a standing desk adds cost and cable work without a clear gain. A standing desk is most useful when you want to change position during the day. It is less useful if the room cannot take a 47 to 48 inch top, which is the width of all six desks in the table.

Checks before you buy

  • Measure your chair’s seat height range and the desk’s lowest and highest settings. Compare them in the same unit.
  • Check the load rating against your monitor, laptop and any accessories. The listed ratings in the table run from 176 lb to none stated, so add up your own equipment first.
  • Check the preset count and the height figure on the listing, because the bullets and spec fields differ on several models.
  • If you plan to clamp a monitor arm to the desk, check the mount type. In our table, only the HUANUO listing names a C-clamp mount.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy the chair or the desk first?

Start with the chair if it already fits you, and check the desk’s height range against it. Buy a desk first only if the room or the work pattern is the main constraint, because the chair must still match the desk height.

Is a standing desk better for posture?

A standing desk gives you a second position, which many people find useful. It does not fix a poor set-up on its own. The screen, keyboard and chair still need to be set for each position.

Which desk has the lowest listed height?

Among the six desks, the lowest minimum where the spec fields and bullets agree is the HUANUO at 27.5 inches. The FEZIBO and Cubiker spec fields list lower minimums, at 27.3 and 27.16 inches, but their bullets give higher figures, so check the product page before relying on either.

Do I need a chair that goes with the desk height?

Yes, in practice. Your feet should rest flat on the floor or a footrest, and your forearms should sit near the desk surface. A chair whose seat height range does not overlap well with the desk’s lowest setting will be hard to use comfortably at the lowest desk height.
